A chance to name an Orca calf- help me please!

Hi Everyone,

Oh where do I start? Several years ago an Orca calf, who was given the name Springer was found in US waters without her mom. Killer whale calfs and all other Orcas are identified by not only their tails but by their whale sounds. Springer could never join a US pod as she had a Canadian accent (thought that was cute too) so in order for her to join her pod she'd have to be relocated to Canada. Not an easy feat and it involved specialist from both the US and Canada working together. Springer was so lonely she kept nudging up to boats and was in danger of being killed.

Now here's the good part. She was the first Orca in history to be successfully relocated to her pod. Now Springer has a baby herself!!! A happy ending and there was a naming contest and I chose the name DISCOVERY as it stated the baby was not known if it was male or female. I also did research and it turned out most are named after the places where they are born. Discovery Pass is where Springer and her pod travel the waters.

THE NAME CHOSEN BY ME HAS BEEN SHORTLISTED!!!!!! There is now a contest for people to vote for the 11 names short-listed. PLEASE OH PLEASE TAKE THE TIME AND VOTE FOR DISCOVERY.(I'm not above grovelling - :O) _ as some of these majestic animals can live over 100 years like "Grandma" who is 102 years old.

Thank you so much everyone!

Happy to do this for you Marianne. Hope you win.
Thanks very much for doing this! Although I'm hoping for the name I chose to be in the final three - the last hurdle would be that the name chosen by the Orca team which consist of biologist, oceanographers, ect as they make the final selection..it would be such an honor to have the name I chose picked.

There is currently a Grandma Orca who lives in a pod of 100 that that has been aged at 102! They are very sociable animals and live harmoniously together in large family groups. The pod which Springer and her calf reside is in Canadian waters (near Discovery Pass) and I thought the name DISCOVERY was also symbolic of what we can learn from them. There's a wonderful video on Youtube (three part series) which shows rescue efforts that combined the efforts of a US and Canadian team and successfully reunited Springer with her pod. It was the first time in history that this happened.

The whale from Free Willy fame was successfully returned to the wild but sadly lived out his days alone. With knowledge of "their voices" that can now be traced to individual pods lets hope that any future Orcas can be returned to their own pods and live out their days with them. Each pod has unique sounds and that's why Springer could never live out her days with a US pod as they recognized she had a foreign "Canadian" accent. The pods only mate with foreigners but do not allow them to live among them and this prevents inbreeding in the pods. Really amazing facts I've learned from watching the vids which is how I learned about the contest. There's no monetary win but to have an Orca given a name which I chose would be such a huge honor. Again, thanks to everyone! Much appreciated.

Thank you Cindy!
I voted and told everyone I work with if they want to continue to have internet access during lunch this week, they would vote also. Sometimes, it's good to be a gangsta...

Voted!!! Perfect name for the calf! Our fingers and paws crossed too
Whales are amazing creatures. Everything needs to be done to ensure safe, happy lives for all of them.
Voted. And I'm glad to hear from you Marianne. I have missed you.
Voted too! Is it a one time vote, or vote daily poll?
Added my vote

Ha Vance thanks for that! It's good to know people in "power".

Again, much appreciated for all those that took the time to vote. I miss everyone on here too. It was difficult for me to log onto here for some time as it reminded me of Panda so much. Even after a year my heart still hurts and I have yet to write a memorial for him.

Voting ends this Friday and afterwards the top three names will be given to the scientific Orca group who will choose the final name. I think you can only vote once.

Much love
Marianne
You can vote everyday. I just voted again and it accepted it
I just voted again too. I wasn't sure if was the fact I voted at work earlier - good to know!
Just wanted to say thanks everyone for the votes and apologies for my delay getting back here. The contest is now closed and I'm checking my email daily to see if the name I chose is one of the top three. I'll keep you posted!

Marianne
Fingers crossed here too!
