"A Farmer's Best Friend: The Old English Sheepdog" Dec 2013

http://modernfarmer.com/2013/12/farmers-best-friend-old-english-sheepdog/

The December 2013 Modern Farmer article has likely already been discussed somewhere in this forum but since I just joined and several people I have shared this article with privately recently had not seen it, I thought why not share here too? I am interested in what others think about the article. Everyone seems to have their own reaction. What is your reaction to this article either as a first-time reader or as someone who has seen it before? Thanks!

It was an interesting article. We enjoy herding with our 3 OES. We were out at our trainer's farm on Monday for some practice and it is a joy to watch our girls work, especially now that they are more experienced. I don't think that the herding instinct is entirely bred out of the breed, if my girls are any example! I get very happy when I see folks from this forum giving herding (and agility for that matter) a try. Our dogs are more than just pretty and cuddly, they are a very capable breed in many different activities.
Wish I had sheep or geese for Monty to herd, being in the city there is not much chance for it. I am sure Monty would love it, he loves herding Buster.
It's great to read about people who still use the dog for what it was bred for and the instincts are still being nurtured.

We live in downtown Ottawa. Only politicians around to herd. We drive an hour each way out to a farm, and attend herding clinics when we can. We bought our dogs a car for this. :twitch:

 Sounds like us, it is all about the dogs. I tried contacting a farm that does herding but didn't hear back. Will stick to the agility for now.

Keep bugging the farm, they might not check their email often and it might have slipped through the cracks. We do spend more time doing agility, though. We joined a club and so can practice whenever we want to. Mady is up to the full twelve weave poles! :clappurple: When I add up what we have spent for herding, agility, and the showing that we have done, it makes my heart stop. So I stopped adding it up!
