SheepieFest! September 21, 2014 (northern Illinois)

Mark your calendars for the 10th anniversary of SheepieFest! :yay:  :clappurple:

September 21, 2014 from 1-5pm at Best Friends in Buffalo Grove, IL (same place as last year). Details to come, but plan on bringing food to share, beverages, and your dog (or not, remember I don't have a dog and I've been coming since the inaugural SheepieFest!). We decided against a silent auction since everyone has too much stuff but ideas are welcome for fund-raising. I like Deborah's Shekels for Sheepies.....

Consider this the "save the date" card.
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
Yay! :yay: Sounds like a plan. How about having a donation jar?

Cindy
Bake sale, but people will be stuffed from all the yummies, there will be no room for more..........maybe. Somebody handy with a pastry bag, sheepdog cupcakes?
Dog hair cookies (coconut). Sheep dip dip.
So excited. Can't believe it's 10 years! If anyone has anything Great they want to donate....car, trip, something lie that, we could raffle it. We will have a donation jar (shekels for sheepies). As always, any funds raised will go to Midwest Old English Sheepdog Rescue, Nita and Nancy's rescue. Any other ideas for fund raising? We do not want to charge an entry fee. Ideas? We a going to have a lunch at hackneys in August to discuss possibilities .
NOOOOO! I'm away that weekend. Gosh darn it. I was looking forward to meeting all the Chicagoland sheepies and sheepie people. Maybe another time...
I am going to talk to Dino to see if this is doable!!!!

I would love to attend SheepieFest!!!! And I know Willow would love it too!!!!

It isn't that far and it would be a great weekend getaway for us!!!!

Will be in touch~~~~~~~

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Val! How great it would be to have you here and get to meet you!!!! :clappurple:
Looking forward to it.
The Hackmaster Association has made the decision that since we have gotten to the point where we are pretty much recycling sheepie objects, there will be no silent auction. We will have a donations jar (Deborah calls it Shekels for Sheepies) and hope that people will donate what they would have spent on the auction. We'd love to have a large raffle prize (like a TV, etc) so if anyone knows how to get something like donated to our event, let me know.

Hackmaster Association! I see a whole new personality developing in us!

Yes everyone! We are begging and hoping someone out there will donate a " big ticket" item for us to raffle! I personally am interested in a tummy tuck donation, but, well you know....that wouldn't work. IPad, IPod! Airline Tickets, Weekend Getaway, tv, something people will really want. OES Midwest Rescue is a 501c, so it can be a tax deduction .

Paula darling, you are so much smoother than me!

Thanks in advance! :wag:

Paula, you always crack me up!
:wag: :wag: :wag: :wag: :wag:
ONLY 3 MORE WEEKS! And, we're getting some good raffle prizes including Chicago Bulls Tickets!!!! Ticket are a $1 each, 6 for $5 or 12 for $10!!!! And you don't have to be there to win! We will send tickets to you. If interest in buying tickets, contact me! If you have something terrific for us raffle, contact me!!!! If you just wanna say "HI" contact me!!!!

If you write a check for the raffle tickets, make it payable to Midwest Old English Sheepdog Rescue. They are a 501c!

The date of the Bulls game is TBA!!!!!!!!!
:wag: :wag: :wag: :wag: :wag:
I wrote a reply but it disappeared. Anywho, I'll be buying lots of raffle tickets even though I'm not a sports fan. $1 per ticket is a great bargain, and I'm sure I know someone who would love to go to the game.

If you can't attend SheepieFest!10, you can still buy tickets. PM or email Debcram and she'll hook you up. You don't need to be present to win.
Some of us cheeseheads would like to attend. Could you please help out with driving directions?

John
Cody (OES) and Kali(PON)
 Since Cheeseland is sooooo big, I'll start you from Pleasant Prairie Outlet, in Kenosha:

Take 94 South to Illinois. Stay on 94/294 until you get to the exit on Rte 22 (Half Day Rd) west. Stay on 22 until you get to Milwaukee Ave (Rte 21). Stay on Milwaukee Ave. a couple miles, to Aptakisic Rd. At Aptakisic turn right, west. Stay on for about 1 1/2 miles. Best Friends is on the right...and have a big sign. If you get to Buffalo Grove Rd. you've gone too far west. It should only take about 1/2 hour from the Mall to Best Friends.

Looking forward to meeting you and your pups!!!!!!!!
OOOOOH, new people and doggies!!! Can't wait. Rude Dog (HeatherRWM) has an auction going over on Rude Dog's Trashcapades Facebook page (I believe it's a public page so you don't need a FB account) to benefit Midwest OES (Heather and Rudy won't be able to attend SheepieFest!10). Bidbidbid. And clear your calendars for a Bulls game! bidbidbid.
Can't wait to meet everyone and their Sheepies, Norman will have so much fun!

We are so looking forward to meeting you! Tell Norman, my middle name is Norma!
:wag: :wag: :wag: :wag: :wag: :wag: :wag:
I am assuming the weather will be perfectly fine for us!

I am bringing (2) 3 foot subs from Subway--one veggie (with cheese) and one turkey. I will also bring a case of bottled water. Uprights, please remember to bring water for your pup(s). They get thirsty running around. Bring a chair to sit on and I hope Debcram and Amanda and Melissa can bring tables like they did last year. If anyone else has a long folding table please bring if you can. The tables are always full of food. Rumor has it Claudia is bringing a Texas sheet cake, and she's a fab baker.

Stacy, do you still have the giant bin of plates and silverware??
That sounds good Paula! I'll bring several different bags of chips and such. That Texas sheet cake is making my mouth water already! Love that!
I have a fold up metal table I can bring also. If you need anything else please let me know.

I'm doing pretty well selling the raffle tickets at work. So far I'm at $88.00 for just a few days.

Cindy

This is what I have on the sheet for the raffle tickets:

Midwest Old English Sheepdog Rescue
(A 501c non profit organization)

Raffle ticket donation
$1.00 for 1
$5.00 for 6
$10.00 for 14
$20.00 for 30

Drawing will be Sept. 21st at the 10th annual SheepieFest! and winners need not be present. Chance to win Chicago Bulls tickets* and other great prizes. (Non-profit so all proceeds go to helping the dogs.)

*Donated by Grossinger Chevrolet, Palatine.
We just can't squeeze this get together into our schedule this year, but I'd like to donate some bows I make to you guys. All the proceeds can go straight to the group your helping.

I make different versions, some clip in hair others clip on collars.
I'd be more than happy to make them and send them out this week.
These are sport team bows, I can do fall ones, Halloween ones, and maybe some with sheep on them.
Lisa, thank you for your generous offer. I sent you a PM with my mailing info. These will sell a lot of tickets!!! Just NO Green Bay Packers though. All our proceeds to to Nita and Nancy at Midwest OES Rescue.
Stopped at the Dollar Tree and bought a bucket for Shekels for Sheepies (aka donations bucket), a bag of garbage bags, and 6 gift bags to put the raffle tickets in. If I motivate myself, I might decorate the bag, or I might not. :lmt:

Paula,

Is there anything else you need me to pick up? Just sold another $20.00 of raffle tickets so now I'm up to $117.00.

Cindy
Cindy,

Bring the raffle tickets to obedience tomorrow night. Anything special I can bring for the pot luck? Otherwise I will pick up a veggie tray or cheese and crackers, something like that. Do we need more water? Getting close!

I left the tickets at work Sandy hoping more will sell on day shift since I'm off tomorrow and on night shift the rest of the week. The veggie tray sounds good. I guess it depends on how many people show up if a case is enough. Maybe Paula or Deborah can give us a rough count on the number of people coming?

Cindy
I'm assuming the usual 25-30 people will be attending. Cindy, you are lead raffle ticket seller!!!!! I'm rather brain dead now but Sandy, there can never be enough water. Veggie tray also sounds delish.
We will bring a couple tables.

Not sure what food yet....what food group are we in need of?
Amanda P wrote:

Anything that isn't sweet. We always end up with a ton of cookies.
I'm bringing a table too...and water...and a ramen noodle salad. who's bringing plates, cups, etc? OH! and I'm bringing Pirate and Lizzie!
Stacy has the lifetime supply of plates, etc. I hope she's bringing them.
I can bring plates, plastic ware, and cups. Just let me know if it's needed.
I also have lots of T-shirt bags for poop pickup.

Cheddarheads John, Cody (OES) and Kali(PON)
That would be great! Can never get enough!!!! Looking forward to meeting you!
Thank you Cheddarheads! Please bring whatever plates, etc. you can.

Everyone, remember to bring money for raffle tickets!!!! :D :D :D
Here are the bows I made for the get together.

Hope you guys like them.
So glad I could donate them for rescue
Okay, I'm thinking beer bread and dip for Sunday.

Now I'm hungry :cow:
Lisa, those are gorgeous!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!

Amanda...you're killin' me! See you Sunday!
Cheddarheads, hold off on the plates and cutlery. I found a big bag of those in my garage. Can you bring a big package of napkins and whatever else you want to eat?

Amanda, I like the idea of beer bread and dip. I like the idea of anything and dip.

How should we work the raffle for the bows?
Lisa, the bows are beautiful!!! Great job!

Paula, should we raffle or sell the bows in groups or individually? I'd be willing to be the auctioneer if we decided to just auction them off either in groups or individually. Which ever would generate more for the rescue donation.

So far my raffle ticket sales are at $142.00. I maybe could sell more if I was on day shift this week. Night shift this week is limiting my sales. I'll go around to my neighbors this weekend and try to sell more.

Cindy

:wag:
Thanks guys.

I sell them for $10.00 giving proceeds to different oes rescue groups. Maybe just let people buy them for a donation of at least $5.00.
I included the displays.

Lisa
I like Lisa's idea of purchasing them individually. That way Cindy will save her voice!
Paula O. wrote:

I'm really getting excited! Such great response from everyone. Paula, Cindy, I'm planning on getting there at noon...or should I be there earlier? :cheer: :wag: :roses: :dreidel5: (I had to throw in the dreidle!)
That's a good idea to sell the bows. I can plan to get there closer to noon also if you like. Let me know.

Cindy
I'll get there around noon. Deborah, the dreidel is important because it is Shekels for Sheepies! It might be good for those who are bringing tables to get there a bit earlier than 1.

For those of you who don't know what to bring, it is honeycrisp apple and grapes season.... Chocolate chip cookies are never a bad idea either.....
AND! Name tags and markers!
I have a marker and masking tape and blank paper in my bag. I found 3 1/3 x 4 labels in my work cabinet. They do not say "Hello, my name is" but I think we'll live.

If you are going to buy raffle tickets, please bring singles. I have a feeling we will run out of change then people will be forced to buy $20 of tickets........ :lmt:

Don't bring singles! Buy $20 worth!
Or bring $20 worth of singles! The Shekels for Sheepies bucket is ready for action.

We'll plan to be there about 12 as well.

See everyone on Sunday!!
I emailed Sandy tonight and she might have a table as well to bring. She will also try to be there around noon to help us set up. Can't wait to see everyone Sunday!!!

:excited: :excited: :excited:

:wag:
I received Lisa's donations of hair and collar bows yesterday. OMG they are adorable! There are two bows--orange and blue with footballs. I went to the U of I (those are the Illini colors as well as the Bears) so there might be a bidding war! There are Halloween bows and winter bows and autumn bows and girl bows and boy bows. These will be hot items!
I will bring napkins and a folding table. I will also bring some Wisco cheese and crackers, and some nice Milwaukee sausage.
Thanks,
John

Awesome!

I've gotten so wrapped up in the fundraising aspect of SheepieFest! that I'd like to take a moment and post about the spirit of ShhepieFest! It was started 10 years ago so Pirate and I could meet other sheepie families. The hope was that we could build a sheepie community here in the Chicago area. I've meet the best people and pooches (some not even sheepies) on this journey, and am so grateful for these friendships. The fundraising was just a delightful offspring of this event.
So, the day before the 10th annual SheepieFest! I just want to say, thanks for all the joy, beauty, friendship and sometimes heartbreak you and your lovies have brought to my life. See ya (fur real!) tomorrow! :wag:

Well said! Couldn't agree more! Can't wait to see everyone tomorrow!

Cindy

:wag:
Fingers and paws crossed here that you have beautiful weather tomorrow! Have fun everyone!!! One of these day we will make it to SheepieFest!! :wag:
Norman and I are bringing homemade pasta salad, green bean salad, water, and some goodies for the Sheepies. Very excited to attend our first Sheepiefest and to meet everyone! See you soon.
Two more hours til I leave. It's about 68 degrees, partly cloudy, bit of a breeze. But the clouds will be clearing and we will have perfect weather. Bring a light jacket--last year a bunch of us stayed late gabbing and it got a bit chilly.

I'm wearing jeans, cotton turtleneck, sheepie work shirt, and bringing mr SheepieFest! 8 hoodie AND a rain ponch, just in case! Pirate and Lizzie are wearing their fur coats. Paula, I did make the ramen noodle salad.
:wag:
I cannot believe this SheepieFest! I counted 40 people and at least the same number of dogs. Every year I worry nobody will attend and that there won't be enough food. This was the greatest number of attendees, old and new faces, and tables were groaning with food. Our raffle (organized by Cindy and Deborah) generated more than $800 for Midwest OES Rescue. Nita, husband Darrow and sister Vonne drove from Indiana. we had people from Wisconsin. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a splendid time was had by all.

People need to post pictures.
All I can say is....WOW! What a great day! What a great team effort putting this thing together. Paula and Cindy...you are forever in my heart :hearts:

As Paula said, we had a terrific turn out. Sheepies EVERYWHERE! My neighbor, Shannon, came with me and at one point said, "I feel like I'm in a Disney movie"!

I was so thrilled the Nita and Von come all the way from Indiana. Love those girls...and feel in love with little Theo, the rescue they brought with them.

Ok, hold on to your hats....PIRATE RAN!!!! Yep, honest! He had the time of his life, but spend most of the rest of the afternoon grumbling like the old man he is. Sadly, he was pretty lame last night. He will be staying on one level of the house for a few days. I think he's hurting....but I'm sure he thinks it was worth it. Lizzie made a new friend, Lucy. They are both tiny and were adorable together.

There were such wonderful, loving people there. So generous with their love and spirits! AND FOOD! We had a lot of new folks there. Being 64, I'm terrible with names, but y'all know who you are!!! Thank you for being part of the SheepieFest! family!

The weather could not have been better. No rain!

So, SheepieFest! 10 is in the books. I was too busy to take many pictures, so I hope someone will post some. Each year I'm so touch by the turnout. This year exceeded my expectations.

Time to start planning SheepieFest! 11! And I have an idea :bulb:

Thank you all....
:wag:
Midwest Old English Sheepdog Rescue would like to thank everyone who participated in the success of SheepieFest 10! It was great to see so many OES together in a secure venue where weather was perfect for the dogs to play. What a great group! No major scuffles between such a large group of dogs, many that had never met before. So exciting for us to meet old friends and adopters of MOESR dogs, to match faces and names of on-line friends and to make some great new friendships. It was definitely worth the five-hour drive!

Thanks to everyone who donated items to the raffle, especially Deb for the Fitbit, New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue for the gift baskets, Lisa for the beautiful handmade bows and to ??? for the Chicago Bulls tickets. Thanks to all who donated to the Shekels for Sheepies jar, who bought raffle tickets and to everyone who pitched in food for the delicious picnic lunch. My apologies to anyone I’ve left out: I was off on a 'sheepdog high', seeing all the gorgeous OES and talking “dog” to old and new friends while trying to ride herd on Lyra & Theo. :-)

A special thank-you goes out to Deb for the great idea of putting together a Chicago-area Old English Sheepdog gathering ten years ago and keeping up this yearly tradition. The overwhelming number of sheepdogs and their humans over all these years attests to how popular this event is. Even though the distance and scheduling often does not allow our participation, our hearts are with SheepieFest every year!

More thanks goes to Deb and Paula, SheepieFest “co-conspirator”. Love you both! :hearts: I was thrilled to have the opportunity to say “thank you” in person again this year. Thanks also to Cindy for all your hard work selling raffle tickets and for helping things run smoothly yesterday.

Midwest Old English Sheepdog Rescue was overwhelmed with the receipt of the envelope containing over $800 of proceeds from the event. My only regret was that Nancy could not be there to share in the festivities. Every rescue has its share of dogs with medical issues and MOESR is no exception. Most dogs come to us without being spayed or neutered so it’s always an expense we expect. Many dogs come with minor medical issues such as ear or eye infections and skin problems of various kinds. Frequently, we take in dogs with more serious issues requiring surgeries or expensive medication. Most of us with our own pets know what this means. Vet bills are high and the assistance we received from Sheepiefest 10 helps us keep doing what we do. Thank you for helping us continue rescuing Old English Sheepdogs in the Midwest.
:ghug:
Sounds like you all had a wonderful time! Would love to be able to attend sometime!

Oh gosh! we have been so busy I totally forgot about that stuff! next crawl into the crawlspace Steve will see what we still have for next year. so sorry! Glad someone brought supplies! so much fun! Thank you, Deborah, for organizing as always and to everyone that makes the event happen! I know I haven't been much help the past...uh...5 years since the kids are so little. Thinking I need to come alone next year so I don't have any responsibilities with me although Evan had a lot of fun with the other kid so that was good. Foz was just exhausted and his leg hurt from being the barking sherrif and just couldn't control himself not to run after everyone. Guess he is taking after Annie in his older age :(
Fozzie and Izzie are the fun police. They don't want the dogs to enjoy themselves too much!
I would say it has something to do with having "Z"s in your name, but Lizzie is a goodtime girl!
Hello-

I realize this post is older, but I was wondering if there was going to be some sort of gathering for summer 2016? We were in Milwaukee for a wedding this weekend on the lake's south shore and saw a man walking two OES off-leash and were amazed at how well they were trained. Our OES is just over a year old and seems to be in her rebellious toddler years. Any way I was posting because after seeing the other owner walking his dogs, my husband and I thought it might be nice to get out and meet other owners and their dogs-we have yet to come across any in our own neck of the woods. We're from the northern Illinois area and we've only heard rumors of other OES dog sightings. We're beginning to think they are legends...
Hello! Yes, we will be holding the 12th annual SheepieFest! On September 11th. For all the details, you can find us on Facebook. Search SheepieFest! Illinois. Looking forward to seeing you there, and meeting your pup!
Fingers crossed, I can make it this year. Sadly, it's because we don't have any sheepies..... :(

:hearts: :hearts: But I look forward to loving up all of the pups in attendance. :hearts: :hearts:

Laurie
I'm really looking forward to seeing you! We have a Facebook group, Sheeiefest!Illinois.
