Video chat solution fo those that can't go to Sheepiepalooza

I was looking at multiple-user video conferencing solutions last night and came across Google Hangouts.
Looks like one person can video conference with up to 10 people.

It's free and available for Windows computers & tablets, Android devices, and Apple computers & tablets.

I think all that would be needed is a connection to the internet.

Here's a link to it:

What do you all think?

Mark--I am willing to give it a try. I will take my computer and ipad with me. The only problem I see is with internet connection at all the fun places. We will have it at the hotel, but not sure of the other places, but we can give it a try and see what happens.

I have your phone # and can text you mine.

I am not a real whiz when it comes to the techy part, but I am sure there will be enough people to figure it out.

I will touch base with you and we can give it a try.

Edit: -- you might want to post specific instructions here to make it quick so no one will need to look it all up (especially me  )
Though it is a PIA to post pixs here, please do so as well.
So a little more digging reveals that in order to use Google Hangouts, each person who is using it must create both a Gmail account and a Google + account.
Gmail is just Google's e-mail system. Nothing crazy there.
Google + is Google's version of Facebook. I know many people are averse to social media because of privacy concerns and I can appreciate that.

So if we want to continue down this road, we have to create Gmail accounts & Google + accounts.
I'm guessing that you just need to follow the instructions at this link to create the account.
https://accounts.google.com/signup?service=mail

After that, you'll probably have to download the appropriate Google Hangouts app for your device (Apple, Android, PC).

From there, I don't know as I'm not home right now so I can't experiment.

If we can wait a little bit, I'll look at it more in detail when I get home this afternoon.
I'm working on this right now.
I hope to know something in an hour or so.
OK. So let's give this a try.
You'll have to create a gmail account first, then set up your Google + (like Facebook), and then download Hangouts.
I'll try to put some step-by-steps up here, but I'm not a good teacher.
Keep in mind that we won't be able to do anything until at least 2 of us create their accounts and friend each other. At that point, we'll be able to test the video chat.

So let's go!!
Step 1: Creating a Google account
- go to https://accounts.google.com/signup?service=mail to create a google account
- screen should look like this

Image

- fill in fields (you will be creating a new gmail account)
- type in verification text
- click next step
- upload a picture if you want
- answer or bypass some tutorial questions
- you should then see your new gmail screen
Step 2: Getting to your Google + account
- click on the "Apps" icon in the upper right hand corner. It's a 3 box by 3 box grid looking icon

Hi Mark--We just got here and are going out to eat. I do have a Google account and a gmail account. I will work on this when we get back in tonight ( hope not too late).

Thanks for the directions!

Susan--I will post pics while we are here. I brought all the cords etc. so I could do it. Might be late nights--but I will get some up!
Step 3: Getting into your Google + account
- click on the red "g+" icon in the upper left corner of the window that's in the upper right corner of your screen

Image

- I didn't have anything to add here because none of you signed up yet. But you will add me (and the others if they're signed up at the time that you sign up) when you get to this point. My google + name is Cam Vale (get it? a play on my oes.org screen name)
- click continue
- add things you like if you want
- click continue
- a pop-up will open up
- click "continue anyways"
- add picture & personal info if desired
- click "finish"
- it will then take you to your Google + home screen
Step 4: Installing Google Hangouts
- go to http://www.google.com/+/learnmore/hangouts/

Image

- you'll notice a green bar that says "Download for"
- pick the appropriate download for your device & click on it
- google play for Android devices
- app store for Apple devices (iPad, iPhone; not sure if this is for their computers)
- "your computer" for PCs (& maybe Apple computers?)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I chose the "your computer" choice because I have a Win7 PC. I was asked if I wanted Google to make a change to the computer, I said yes, & it launched Google Chrome & a sign-in page. Not sure what would happen on an Apple device. I just closed this window out because I already had Gmail & Google + opened in other tabs
At this point, I'm waiting for a few of you to join so we can figure out the video chat functionality.

Keep in mind that Google +/Google Hangouts video chat can only support up to 10 users at a time. That means 1 person at Sheepiepalooza, and 9 people NOT at Sheepiepalooza at a time.

I'll be up until 10 PM EDT, or 9 PM St. Louis time.
I think many of you have my cell phone number. Feel free to call or text me if you need help.

Fingers crossed this will work. :)
PS: For those that already have a gmail account, you can pick up at Step 2.
And if you already have Google + account, you can pick up at Step 4.
And if you already have Google Hangouts in your Google + account, you can go ahead and add me.
Again, my Google + name is Cam Vale.
Does this mean we might be able to participate at the auction? I loved Fred's bows!
Gail,
Only if someone has a cellular enabled computer/tablet there or they pair a regular computer/tablet with their cellular enabled cell phone or they have a cellular wireless hotspot device. It might work with just a smart phone.
My guess is there is no WiFi on the Purina Farms grounds.

This whole thing might only work at the hotel. I'm hoping it works out in the courtyard where we congregate but I'm not sure.

I sincerely apologize that I did not get pics up while in St. Louis. I had a few computer issues and could not download my pics from my camera while there. Home --all fixed--and I will get some of them up tonight and the rest tomorrow.

Also 'failed' on the chat--so sorry. If we try again maybe we can set it up before we leave, as it gets busy real fast after arriving! I think the chat is a great idea to share a little bit in real time for those who can't attend!

Promise to plan ahead for the next sheepie event   !
Hi Karen,
I was thinking that we should figure this out anyways.
It would be useful for the next sheepie meet, wherever & whenever that is.

We can get it going & work out bugs and then bring other oes.org members on-board.

Text me when you have some free time to work on this.

I agree! Maybe we can work on this over the weekend. I will touch base!
