Water crazy

First time poster. I tried to search on this question, but the terms were a little generic to give useful results.

Anyways, we have a 4 month old OES who is about as close to the perfect puppy, but she's doing something I've never seen with any other dog. When my wife and I are ready to water her, she loses her little mind. It's extremely cute how excited she gets, but that's the least of my concerns. It doesn't seem to matter how much water she's had, she will drink it all.

If we're not careful she'll drink from the toilet, puddles and even lick the bathtub after we've showered. It makes bath time quite the challenge too.

Has anyone seen this? Is this a quirk of our dog or a breed trait?

Hello and welcome. Congratulations on your new puppy :hearts:

Assuming that she is given ample water, extreme thirst can be a symptom of an underlying problem. You are right that despite her cuteness of licking every available drop of water, you are very concerned. I'd be talking to my vet immediately. If she had a reputable breeder, that person will be a guidance and help to you, and should definitely be made aware of the situation.

Please let us know what you find with her.
I second that. I would have her checked out by a vet, as extreme thirst can be a sign of diabetes, or another underlying health issue.

She could also be water-obsessed. :) Oscar had a similar issue when he was a puppy. He would drink all of the water in the bowl, then throw it up a few minutes later. Once we had taken Oscar to the vet and discovered that his issues were not medical in nature, we started limiting the amount of water he got at any given time. We would only give him 16 - 20 ounces. If we saw an empty bowl, we would add another 16-20 ounces. He is now 10 years old, and we do it to this day.

As near as I can tell it's not thirst, but some kind of personality thing. The breeder made a point of mentioning it when we picked her up, saying, "She loves her water. For a while at least you shouldn't give her more than a little bit at a time."

When we first got her we tried to gradually increase the amount of water we were giving her, but it seems that no amount is too much. She's drunk until she threw up for us as well.

I definitely want to ask the vet, but I wanted to see if anyone has seen this behavior.
I also have a 4mth old oes and she loves water. She barks if the water bowl gets even half way empty. When she's let out of her crate at night, on the way to the potty, she always stops at the water bowl first and fills up. Yes, when I'm taking a bath she sticks her tongue in to have a taste. My husband commented to me that she is so much like Violet, my other oes I had, who loved to drink water. It seems like when they belly up to the water bowl they drink forever. That is why we call them sheepie-camels. I have only my aussies to compare their drinking habits too. I also think that the puppies because they are babies, need more liquid. Helene is a perfectly healthy pup according to her vet.
Agree with the above advice to have your pup checked out for underlying problems. BUT when we got Lyra, she was obsessed with water, mostly to play in. She loved to splash around and although her water dish was empty every time we turned around, very little went into the puppy. It was all over the kitchen. Her breeder told us to nip that in the bud, which we did immeditely. Now she just dips her face and comes to greet us. Gotta love a sheepdog!
Good to know all. I thought you might appreciate the video we shot of her freaking at watering time.

When we got Zoey, fresh from her prison training, she would drink until she got sick. We read in the papers that the inmates made their notes and found that this was an ongoing issue with her and they had her trained to stop heard the command 'easy'. We've since been able to maintain this and Caitlyn has also picked up that when she hears 'easy', she stops drinking and walks away from the bowl. As for the bowl, we have a gravity feed waterer. Between the two, they'll wipe out the gallon+ supply in a day so it's always fresh water.

It;s funny to watch Zoey when the bottle and bowl are empty; she'll kick it around the kitchen and back until we fill it and then all is right in her world. Caitlyn has also picked up this behavior...

How adorable is she :hearts: :hearts:
AGREED....she is too precious...

I also agree a check up would be a good idea, just to make sure everything is OK...

Heart would drink until she threw up, so when Willow came a was a little 'gun shy'...so, if I think she is drinking too much at once, I say..."Willow, ENOUGH." and she stops for a bit, then she will drink more.

Heart would always come to 'take' a bath with me..she would lay by the tub and lick the rim..no big deal..she was NOT intrusive at all...Willow, however...would surely jump in the tub WITH me just to get to the warm (HOT) water. I have thought maybe she just like the taste of hot water???? Needless to say, Willow is daddy's 'problem' while mom relaxes in the tub.
