Allergies?

Since Amy's haircut, I've noticed some red bumps in her ears on the flaps, plus her toes on all feet seem red and itchy. We've had some high pollen days here for tree and grass, which has set the kids off on their seasonal allergies and contributes to my hypothesis. I gave Amy some benedryl, set her up in the cone and socked her feet. Her ears look a lot better--as long as I keep her up on benedryl. Some of her feet are looking better, as long as she can't lick them, and as long as they remain socked. The feet she licked excessively have a couple of small hot spots that we are treating.

It looks like allergies. The itchy red toes and spotty ears sure remind me of the old dog with his flea and corn allergies. She doesn't have any of the tummy issues that I would expect if it were a food allergy, though. Could it be a pollen allergy? Maybe all that hair was protecting her from external irritants?

Is there any harm in treating her OTC? We did the old dog, but Amy seems a bit more... challenging with every issue that arises with her.

I think your thinking is clear........I'd stay OTC to see if it clears totally, if not then might be another allergen, maybe something in her food. I assume you are giving her fish oil and maybe a probiotic as well? Wipe her down with a wet rag when she comes back inside to reduce pollen she brings inside....make it a fun game. If things don't clear up in 2 weeks, call the vet.

Yeah, some dogs test your skills as being a dog-Mommy.
We are giving her fish oil, and vitamin E, but not the probiotics. She seems good tummy wise, so I didn't replace them when we ran out.

I'll get a little wet-wipe station set up by the door so we can get her wiped off when she comes in. That's a good idea, and will probably help everyone in the household.
My dog Lucy is doing the same thing. She had been doing so good and bam. Last couple of days itching and scratching like crazy. :( Thought she had scarfed up some cat food when I wasn't looking....silly dog.... Just looked at the pollen index for today and its red,,,high high high....I was even bothered today coughing and sneezing.
Benedryl and pred for the next week. My vet told me to use benedryl and we have a refillable rx for the pred because she has flare ups so often Spring and fall are really bad. I had recently changed her food about two months ago to limited grain free what i have been feeding but changed to a different brand. No issues recently until about the last week. I also use the benedryl for thunderstorms and when i need to cut her nails....calms her down for me.....I love benedryl,,,,,
