How do you sleep at night?!?!?!

Knowing there are ticks in your home!

Ever since our hike Sunday morning, we find about 3 ticks on Yukster every day. It's Thursday!

0 on the kitty and the little dog.

1 on my husband's face (after touching yuki though)

0 on me but I'm the one who THOUGHT each day she's done a thorough brushing (from the root) on Yuki.

But where I'm finding them are on the white part. The part I ...and my husband examine the most (find 0 one hour and then 1 ...12 hrs later).

There has been tick powder on the floor and cleaned up like 3 times. I'm afraid of those bombs because

a) where do we take our cat
b) i'm preggie
c) they're just strong in general

I just found one more on Yuki which means I should comb her but I'm scared out of my mind. Selfishly... just don't one of these suckers to get on me. I have to pull pretty hard with tweezers to get them off of Yuki (they just refuse to let go) ...so hellzzz no do I want to pull one off me.

I feel so itchy.
I think I should soak in the tub until Fall comes. I'm that freaked right now.
Oh my gosh.
I want to go back to Central TX in my home away from any ticks. I hate it here in this janky town.

We find out at the end of the month whether we stay here for another 3 yrs. Yay! /sarcasm

Poor Yukster.

Is Yuki on any sort of flea/tick preventative? I'm grateful that neither of mine have any adverse reactions to the medication.
Jo-

I'd make sure you've got all the animals on Tick preventative. I don't know what kind of ticks you get down there. Here in MN, we can get deer ticks, which can carry Lyme disease. If you were to contract this while pregnant, I can't imagine it would be good for the baby... If you just have wood ticks- it may be really gross, but not as potentially dangerous.

If it was me, I would

#1 call your Dr. and discuss the dangers tick bites could pose, if any, to you and the baby

#2 Call your vet and discuss tick prevention on the animals.

#3 Check your living area, and make sure all your door fits are tight, that none of your window/door screens have holes, and that you minimize any cracks the bugs are coming through on.

Good luck, and stay safe down there!

no, we didn't know this place was packed with them! We've only been here since May. She was only on Advantage. I guess we may have to try Frontline, but I'm not sure... It would only be given to Yuki but our Maltese is extremely allergic to it, and I'm sure she'd be exposed to it where Yuki rolls around. I hear Advantix is bad for kitty cats, and our kitty sleeps with and bathes the dog.
All these products make me so nervous now that I'm pregnant /sigh
Frontline is the best, my dogs had many ticks on them early spring, we put the frontline on and haven't seen any since!! If you find a tick smother it with vaseline if possible, they cant breath and will let go. Then pull with tweezers. Hope this helps.
I thought it was on some threads here where folks said Frontline didn't work?? Anyway, it may be my only solution ...though I'm still not sure if I will try that. Our Maltese was so allergic that her skin BLED severely. Something I will not put her through again if she accidently rubs on Yuki. I will talk to the dr.

We're not really too concerned about lyme disease. We haven't found any (which is good!) nor are we really in any black area. They're just ticks... and in general... top all mosquitos and any other rodent/insect that could crawl on our skin. I can't stomach pulling them off or accidently touching it while doing feel downs on the animals.

BTW, I just found one on the Maltese. Sigh... It wasn't sucking or anything just crawling. I brushed Yuki's legs, and felt her down (just white area), but Mr. Joah will have to give her black hair a rub down when he comes home for lunch in about 30 min. I'm really too spooked to touch her black hair (can't see what I touch). Well crap... I've had to feel her down since Sun. ...I should have the right to be spooked by now!!! I need to teach the husband how to comb her by the roots. (venting a tad..lol)
I've never seen a tick by me so I don't have them on tick preventatives either but I have both dogs on Revolution-- mainly because Lucy is very allergic to flea bites so if I keep them off of both dogs, we're safer. For some reason I was thinking that kept ticks off too but, after just looking it up, I realize I was mistaken.
Yeah- I don't think deer ticks come that far south. It's a big deal up here though- so my pupper will be on it for sure! Good luck with the de-ticking!

Karen :)
Its like an episode from Twilight Zone, the never ending
tick problem! So sorry to hear they are lurking around,
they are too creepy to be true. The sad part if you try to
crush them, they are stronger than anything in the universe
and continue walking!

I agree with Karen, contact your Doc and your vet.
You need to protect your health, they carry numerous
diseases in addition to Lyme.

The Frontline has helped us keep the ticks at bay,
but he has done well on it, no allergies.

Found this site when I was doing research,

www.stopticks.org

it has some interesting information.......

Stay safe!
thanks!!!! :D

funny how your said they are hard to crush. I swear that's true. I think I smooshed them with the tweezers, but then they KEEP MOVInG!!!

Hi,

Take care of yourself and I can understand why you get the heebie jeebies..when finding ticks. It's only been one time that I've found one on Merlin, as (they are rare in my area) and it was after a trip to a remote Island, with lots of deer.

The vet recommended next time I go to purchase tic collars from their office. Forget the name but they weren't over the counter ones..cost aprox 25 dollars each. They worked beautifully! As the next time I brought Panda and Blue - no tics.

Good Luck!

Take comfort knowing we are in the Tick Twilight Zone
with you! Our area reported a 35% increase
in the tick population. 8O
DON'T CRUSH THE TICKS!

This releases any bacteria they are carrying.

Put'em live and kicking into a vial of alcohol. If you can't bear to do that, flush'em.
I have nothing to add except I SORRY YOU ARE GOING THROUGH THIS!!! :(
I always flush them down the toilet that way I know they are gone, definitely check with your vet about frontline, like I said it has worked incredibly for my pups!! No ticks seen in months!!
I just called the vet, and I was so excited about possibly using tick collars. Seems like a simple solution.

WELLL.... too harmful for children, pregnant woman, cats, and the dog itself if he/she bites it. Ah huh... :(

Looks like it's frontline but since she just had Advantage put on her, we have to wait until Aug. We just have to keep the maltese away from Yuki the first several hours after applying it.

I've been grinding the ticks down the kitchen sink. I make sure it's on forever. I HATE THEM and want this to be a miserable.. okay, let me stop. :) :)
I like that "tick torture". Good for you! Bad little bugs bugging our babies!!
hahahaha

They did tell me that though lyme disease has not been seen in my area, another disease (no way I could remember it) ...was, and they have about 16 cases a month at their vet alone this time a year. that's a lot.

She said the first sign of it is usually a bloody nose (the dog of course...) and/or unexplainable bruises.

Curable if found early. They've had a few dogs die already this year though from it.
There's forest everywhere around here, so we use K-9 Advantix. Works great for Jasper. :) You just reminded me that I need to pick up a tube for Jasper before we leave next week. Thanks!!
Not well after seeing them on the wall! That's been awhile. When you see them on the wall and not the dog, you've got to get busy. Vacuum daily, throwing away the gleanings......outside, in a bag, in the trash as soon as finished. Pay special attention to the areas where the wall meets the floor, crevices are great hiding places.

I can understand reluctance to use any chemicals, but how about a dust that can be applied to the floors, crevices and later vacuumed up? Look for Amorphous Silcia Gel......it's part of other products. This will dessicate the little cuties. One product .......Drione????.... also has a little Pyrethrin for killing action and Piper Butoxide to make the Pyrethrin a bit more powerful.......synergist. The rest or most of the rest is silica gel.
Don't be so nervous about them on the walls. I would guess that it is HIGHLY unlikely that they are invading your house on their own. It is MUCH more likely that they've hitched a ride on your dog (probably on you, actually) and jumped off.

A simple barrier of woodchips around the perimeter of your yard if you abut wooded/brushy areas dramatically reduces the number of ticks in your yard, so I have to imagine that a foundation is quite an effective barrier as well.

The wall simulates how they lie in wait in the wild. The get up into low lying bushes and tall grass waiting for passing animals on whom to pounce.

The reason I said it's more likely that they hitched a ride on you and jumped off is that to a tick, your dog is a Cadillac, you're a Yugo. If they're on a Caddy, they're not very likely to wanna leave.
For those of us in the South, we have more of a problem with ticks and fleas, they just don't die off in the short, mild winters. We also know from our vets that Lyme Disease is not prevalent in our area. Luckily, we live in a suburban neighborhood that seem to all have professional yard and pest workers. We have to call in pest professionals for several reasons our children, pregnant or lactating cat, newborn kittens, our dogs, and our frogs. We do have to have a special chemical put down for different pests. It is completely safe for us all. We go through the local business and pay very little a year to have the outside, inside, and attic kept free of any pests. We did find that Advantix (sp?) worked the best for the dogs, when a flea episode did break out last summer, Adams flea and tick Shampoo worked awesome!! I can't say enough about Adams!! I have heard that the Adam's sprays work as well. On my in-laws ranch, in Northern Oklahoma, they use just garlic to keep the fleas and ticks away with success. We use Revolution for cats.

Stormi and co.
Ron, the ticks instinctively climb to attach onto passerbys. No grass in the home so they use walls. What I have seen on the walls are the "raisins" but once in awhile the smaller guys. This occurs near where the dogs bed down. How or why they are dislodging I can't say.

Curiously, we don't encourage bark anywhere near the home to keep insect investations down..............all insects, we aren't talking about just ticks.
