Sticker shock

I went to pick up Amy's antidepressant today, and noticed they had only given me 10 days worth. It turns out that there is a shortage of Clomipramine and the prices have greatly increased. My vet suggested I talk to my human pharmacist and see if they have it cheaper. I grumbled a little at the original price of around $65 for 60 pills (1 month's worth). Today, though, I about had a heart attack at $1000 for 90 pills for the human price. The pharmacy tech actually swore when she saw the price.

So the vet is looking for a new medication for Amy that isn't expensive and is easily available. We'll start a crossover to the new drug within the next couple of days.

So fingers crossed that a drug switchover goes smoothly. I feel bad knowing how well Amy has responded to this medication, but I'm just not going to spend $666  a month on antidepressants for my dog. I wouldn't spend that much on antidepressants for any of the two-legged people either.

I have her on fish oil and vitamin E now. I know that fish oil works very well for seasonal depression in my husband. Maybe it will give Amy a little added bonus too.

Sounds like the time we had with Kdog and her heartworm meds. The usual med was going to be some ridiculous amount for 2 months. Vet contact Walgreens, etc and got the same prices. So instead found an alternative that she wasn't sure would work but was "reasonable" at just a couple of dollars per pill :| Well, it worked  Thankfully So Cal OES Rescue picked up half of the bill and se paid the other half.

Sure hope those "oils" work for her.
the same happened with Tonks' Prozac. The vet suggested I get it from our human pharmacy as it would be less expensive; it was 4 times as much. We went back to getting it from the vet and it's not all that expensive. Lots less expensive than getting stitches for her sister should they get in a bad fight...
go to drsfostersmith.com web site, they list clomicalm as the name brand of the generic you are using for amy and their prices dont seem bad. thinking the pharmacy maybe put in the wrong info for what you were wanting, maybe not generic.
forgot to say call around to different pharmacy's, i do for some of my meds and they will all have different prices...cvs seems most expensive, wally world seems to be lowest because they buy in such bulk quantities.. most vets do not order large amount of rx products so they usually have higher prices. my vet wrote a rx for my Bear Bear s metacam generic and i would get 30 days for 10.00 and each tab was broken into 4 pieces for her dose. A lot cheaper than buying from my vet.
You might try calling around to the grocery store pharmacies and Costco. You will be surprised at the price differences. Sometimes you can get the same strength, but take two pills instead of 1 and the prescription can be cheaper. I found this out through a grocery store pharmacist. I was amazed at the savings. Good luck!
The problem is that the manufacturer Novartis has closed down part of its plant for renovations. They stopped production of this drug as a result. The other companies that make it under the generic have not increased their production to cover the shortages, since this a not as popularly prescribed for humans. I'm going to go ahead and assume that this particular drug is going to be expensive until third quarter of 2015, since Novartis anticipates renovations to be over around the middle of 2015. I don't know that any store in this area will have a backstock that will last us that long. If we have to switch her, I think we might as well get it over with now. There are other, similar medications that should be effective.
One other thing you might try in case the other meds don't work - check into a "Prescription savings club card" at Walgreens. They are meant for humans; however, Walgreens will let you get one for your dog as well. There was a shortage two years ago in a pain medication that I was giving my dog. I did not want to switch my dog at the time because we had tried several medications in the past and this particular med was the only one we found to help. The Walgreens card was perfect. Not only did they seem to have a healthy supply of the medication where other places didn't, the cost was significantly less that what the market price was without the card. You have to pay $25 for the card, but for my situation, it was more than worth it. Good luck :)
We are changing her over to amitriptyline which is the same class of antidepressant as the clomipramine. Fingers crossed that the change over goes well and that she responds as well to the new medication.
Oh my! Many of the older antidepressants are in generic form. hopefully they can find something else less expensive.
