At our house, my goal is weekly. But more often it's every 2 weeks.
I always trim them 1-2 days before any show, obedience, rally or agility trial. For weight pulls, you want a bit of nail for them to dig in and get traction on the carpet surface, but not too long that the angle is wrong...so I usually plan and trim 2 weeks before a pull, then let them grow. Then trim them the day after!

And the uneven growth is d/t nail wear, or lack of wear. The center 2 nails on most dogs get longer, and the 2 on each side tend to get worn down more, so are shorter.
Then you have odd breeds - like bassets whose nails stick out at odd angles and never wear themselves down. Min Pins are another - they really grow with little wear - exception are some of the rears, from bouncing/jumping up so much.

If you trim weekly, and trim back so you see the tip of the quick as a nice circle when you view the end of the nail after you trim, they will go back. If you trim weekly, but never short enough (no circle shows), you will make very little progress and they will stay long. Hope this helps!
