Dogs do listen to humans

Dogs' brain scans reveal vocal responses

Very cool, of course the science is just confirming things we all know about our dogs, it is still very cool to have the scientific evidence coming---it's not just our own emotional biases towards our dogs, it's real.

Dogs are unique among animals because of their very close relationship with humans, and it has been a bi-directional relationship, almost symbiotic! Of course humans have been essential in the development of dogs, but dogs have also influenced the development of humans. This is my argument with my dog-avoiding BIL who says he's fascinated by wild animals in a way he's not with dogs. I counter that dogs are uniquely different from all other animals precisely because of their human relationship. It is truly fascinating in a way a porcupine or mountain lion isn't.

Cool David!

Tiggy understands a lot stuff. It makes it tricky to have a discussion about when we'll walk her without getting her all excited. Even when we avoid the actual word she will still get up from her bed and run to the baby gate and get excited. 8O
thanks david,
nice find!!! it backs us up. 8)
I've known they understand me. china, Violet and Asia used to ease drop in on my phn calls. In training Declan, I tell Asia what I need him to do and she helps out.
I believe??? The more you TALK to you dog ...(NOT nag, dun, yell...), but really TALK...the more they listen..the more they understand...the stronger the bond~~.

I agree. That's how they learn.

I agree--I think their vocabulary understanding increases significantly the more you talk to them.
Reminds me of something funny with Virginia. Often when the 3 girls are out in the backyard, Virginia will be the fun police and bark at the other two. When she wont stop, I send her inside, I used to say "Virginia, inside" and I'd usually throw in a humorous "you're barred" (probably a UK, maybe Australian phrase, you're banned, like thrown out and banned from a pub). I've realized that now all I have to say to her is "you're barred" and she goes running inside. :D
