puppy face muzzle

We have a 9 week old pb OES with papers but her muzzle hair hasn't grown in. A few from the litter are like this. Breeder says it will grow in but I have doubt's. Anyone seen anything like this? Her sibling has the longer hair and squarer face.

Your puppy may have come from a different sire than her sibling. It's possible for more than one dog to mate with a bitch during her heat cycle. You could have DNA testing done to find out if this may be the case with your pup. She may not be a purebred OES. Something doesn't sound right here. :lmt:
Thanks. Ive posted a photo if you click on the camera icon.
(I couldnt figure out how to get it to show up here.) Any opinions are welcome. We will most likely end up selling her as we wanted the option to show her and shes not looking like a good representation of the breed standard. We are upset.
It's not the pup's fault :(
If you are looking to show you should be looking into a mentor and breeder who can
address all of your concerns. You aren't likely to get a show quality dog from some
random breeder. The breeder should be someone you are comfortable asking any
kind of questions including, when the time comes, if the dog is suitable/ready for the ring.
If you bought the dog and the breeder wasn't aware of your intentions you may be
breaking the contract you probably signed at purchase.

Of course, you may have have a good breeder, I don't know from what you wrote. Just thinking
there might be a piece or two missing given the muzzle question. Have you been in contact
with the breeder since you got the dog? Do you know the lines of the dog? There are some things the breeder will be invaluable to you for if you plan to show.

Awww poor pup. I understand not getting what you wanted but maybe this pup could still be a valued member of your family. Even if the pup isn't show quality you can still do fun things like compete in rally, obedience, agility and such with her. Also would make great practice for grooming. If you mess up a clip, only you and your family would see.

I'm not really sure about muzzle hair.
Here are 2 pictures of my puppies at 9 weeks of age. If you click thru for a full size image you can see their muzzle coat & compare. A lot of how your dog will look will depend on the lines your dog is from. Did you see pictures of both of the parents? What kind of coats did they have? Even if they were kept shorter their muzzle coat should be evident.

Thanks all. The rest of her coat is so, so thick but short on the muzzle.
I had only photos of the dam and sire and when I asked the breeder she said it would grow in.
I am curious what area did she come from? Did the breeder have any other breeds on the premises? She reminds me of an Old English Sheepdog and Border Collie mix I saw a few years back. Both breeds could look similar as brand new puppies with the black and white markings except the Border Collie usually has a mask.
Did the pup come from a known show line? Have you seen the pedigrees of the dam and sire? I've never heard of a muzzle growing in enough to compensate. She does look a bit more like a Border.

As mentioned above, even if she is not show quality, she could still excel in other areas. You could use her as a training dog in coat care, grooming, obedience, all of which are critical in conformation showing. It's not something beginners learn quickly. Then get a second dog, one from a known show line with winning heritage. That would also give you time to learn more about the various lines and better breeders.

It upsets me to read you may sell this dog.
I would think if you wanted the option to show the dog & it is not turning out that you will be able to that the breeder would want the pup returned so they could rehome it.
I'm curious - did the breeder represent her as "show quality" when she sold her to you? When we picked up Benson, our breeder went over in detail exactly how she determined whether she was show or pet quality, and spent plenty of time making sure I understood everything she was explaining.

Benson is our first purebred dog, so my experience is limited. But I did lots of research ahead of time, and our contract with her breeder was exactly what I expected, including a specific clause on right of first refusal if we have to give her up.

No, it isn't the puppy's fault. And if you're perfectly happy with her just the way she is, that's fine too. She doesn't have to be a show dog or even a performance dog. She could just be a loving and loyal companion. :hearts:

If you were charged a purebred puppy price and got something different, you have reason to be upset with the breeder. You should at least be able to be refunded on a portion of the purchase price. You should make your concerns known to the breeder as soon as possible.
Also, it is not uncommon for the breeder to have something in the contract
about taking the dog back if for any reason the dog doesn't stay with you.
I would think the breeder would have gone over that at purchase, but you
never know. If you don't know you may want to check, you don't want to be
in hot water.

Agreed, Nita.......I hope the poster can get some of her money refunded, and possibly think about performance instead of showing.

Can you imagine what a great agility dog she would be???

Poor baby would luv to know if she came from reputable lines as she does not look like a PB OEs.

Look at Ch.Sheedogs photos your lil girl not only size at 9 weeks the head and muzzle is all wrong, she is definately not a PB OES there is a cross in there.

Here is a head shot of one of mine at 8 weeks there is a vast difference in looks and size.

Please dont give up on her and give her a chance to be a furry companion, not being awfull but I would be querying as to wether she is a PB OEs. and also is she from a reputable breeder? Only asking that as she looks nothing like, might be in colour of the fur but head and structure wise a 9 week old OES pupper she is not. :( If you are going to on sell her, make sure you do place her in a loving home and not look at re-couping money for a bad buy) She is an innocent in all this and not her fault at all. :(
What was the out come of this most beautiful pup? I would have given her a home in an instance if lived in same country!!xx
I'd love to see an updated photo. Our own Luna was very weird looking when we first got her- wavy coat and growing in funny. I thought for sure that she was a mix of the breeder's OES and pet Golden Retriever. She looks just like an OES today- bit of a pointy head (not boxy) and still a wavy coat, but if you didn't know we'd had our concerns, you'd never think she was other than OES all the way. Of course, she was never to be a show dog, so it hardly matters.
