Sugar Free Diet

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, max has been getting yeast infections in his ears, while I did get some good ideas for cleaning them and do so on a stringent routine, we were also told it was his diet, so we gradually changed him over to a sugar free diet and it seems to have almost eliminated the problem. While I still keep his ears cleaned out twice a week, Im not taking any chances.

Sounds right. If I keep Kensie away from wheat, her ear is better. Wheat converts to sugars so quickly. Have you tried adding plain yogurt to her diet or kefir? Maybe the added bacteria would help with the yeast.
I had a lab/dalmatian mix that was allergic to corn (and a bunch of other things). Once we switched to a corn-free diet his ear infections weren't quite so often.
Our Vet advised us from DAY 1 to only feed Bailee a top quality food. Even though the cost will be quite a bit higher the long term benefits of high quality food has, as our Vet predicted resulted in substantially less Vet visits due to illness. Bailee is 5 years young, weighs 80 pounds and is in excellent physical shape. As a pup he ate Innova Puppy food and as an adult we use Taste of the Wild.

Update: Max still continues to have the yeast problem , I now have to keep a cone collar on him to keep him from digging out his ear any worse than he has already, Vet visits have been all but counter productive and Max just licks off the ointment he prescribed. So now Im treating his ear with Neosporin and cleaning it out every day but still hasn't helped, I also dip his feet everyday in a solution of water, white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. And Ive changed his diet for the third time to the all natural Blue Im just so frustrated right now and feel as though Im just lost as to be able to help him. The vet said to change his diet yet again to a wet food ok which one lol lol. see what I mean Im so confused and not sure anything is helping my boy.
Hi,
You should make an appointment with a veterinary dermatologist. One of our sheepies (Oscar) went for several years with severe ear infections and we could never get them under control. He was miserable and so were we. Our vet finally suggested a visit to the dermatologist. Turns out Oscar has protein allergies. The vet put Oscar on prescription rabbit food for the protein and said that we needed to use "unusual/rare" proteins, in other words proteins he had never been exposed to. He does very well on Royal Canin Rabbit prescription food (which is no longer available due to the rising cost of rabbit), Fromm Duck and Sweet Potato and California Natural Kangaroo foods. I am a very careful label reader, as the vet explained that many of the "unusual/rare" protein foods has pork fat (which is a big no, no for Oscar)as a preservative. It has been over two years since we made these changes and there has not been one ear infection since then. This also applies to treats. We use dried sweet potatoes, carrots and apples for treats in this house.

As a side note the vet said they are seeing more and more protein allergies and are suspecting they develop because of the mediums vaccines are grown in, which in many cases are beef, pig and chicken based.

Good luck finding the cause!

Interesting Kathy. Kensie has a continual problem with her right ear though she is on grain free diet.

I remember one year at Westminster Dog Show they mentioned one group winner was a vegetarian...yes, the dog.

Wow I would have never guessed to feed him like that, I feel as though I have lost faith in the vet we've used since Max first came home with us, I know the yeast problem is a diet problem. perhaps its time to research another vet. I'm currently researching the very thing you've suggested and I really hate to change his food yet again but hey I'm willing to do what ever I have to end him being so miserable. And its funny you should mention the treats as they are non existent in our house due to none of them being sugar free, I will research going the route you have suggested and thank you for your feed back.
