Bogey is much better, but..

He is playing with Suzie, jumping on the couch and bed. No signs of pain. If you remember, he had a back sprain/strain and was in a lot of pain. After meds and rest, he is doing well.
But he still refuses to get in the car. I have tried everything... Ramp, food and having him see Susie get in (he gets jealous and wants to get in).
Can this be a "mental" thing now. Is he associating the car with the pain? Will he get over this?
What else can I do? No I cannot buy another car. Hahahaha. I really thought about renting a mini van to see if he will get in that. It is lower and he will not have the association.

Could very well be association. Can you lift him? If so, practice by making it play, setting him on the couch, bed, and other higher locations. Maybe......maybe he will let you put him into the car.......but be prepared to lift him out or at least help him out. My olders and I worked something out when the time came.
Very interesting Carol. I guess he could be associating the car with his pain. Maybe have a neighbor or someone you know with a different car, let you try out there car, to see if it is just yours. Will he get close enough to allow you to 'boost' him?
I'm glad Bogey's pain is better. Depending on his size, you may be able to try this "tunnel" game suggested by the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (UK):

Quote:
"To overcome a dog's fear of getting into the car, try to make the process into a game which the dog will enjoy - even if it takes a little bit of persuasion. But you'll need to be determined not to give up!

Start by opening the two rear passenger doors so that, to the dog, the car looks like a tunnel. With your dog on a lead, climb in and don't look back; there will come a point at which the lead tightens because it refuses to move, but keep the tension on the lead by pulling gently, i.e. not so hard as to drag your dog, and remain absolutely silent.

Follow my Leader
As a result of your efforts to get out of the car on the other side, your dog will eventually have to get in. When it does, continue to look the way you are going but lavish it with lots of praise. When you climb out your dog will follow you. Run round to the side you first got in and repeat the process over and over again. Who needs a Jane Fonda workout?

Your dog will gradually become so excited about this new game that it will start to jump in before you - at which point you can take longer and longer breaks, sitting on the back seat and giving lots of fuss. If you have a hatch back or estate car, put the back seat down, open the rear door and change the game to one where you get in the side of the car and out of the back - and vice versa. Rest periods are now taken in the luggage compartment!"

Thanks everyone. I cannot lift him. He is 110 pounds. I will try the tunnel play.
Thanks!
So glad to hear that he is doing much better. That has to be such a relief
Great ideas for getting him into the car, hope it works for Bogey.

Any thoughts about getting him thru the groomers door again, or did you switch??
What a novel idea the tunnel in the car. I'm happy to hear the Bogey is doing better. I know you can't lift him. I wish I had a solution.
Ok the tunnel did not work. A local trainer suggested I give him ice cream when we walk toward the car. Then next day open car door and give him ice cream. Then... You get the idea. Get him to associate the car with a great treat. Will let you know. I tried great treats, but a step by step like this.
Hope the ice cream works!! :D
