Holy Cow! Predisone makes her hungry

OMG, I can't believe how hungry China has been since she's been on the predisone. China has always been a normal eater, not aggresive at all. OMG now, she pushed Asia out of her way to get to Asia's bowl. Asia just backs up and let's her eat. Chuck caughter her counter surfing yesterday, with both front feet up on the counter. Usually we don't leave any type of food on the counters, but yesterday was Christmas, so something different. Every holiday the counters have food on them and never before has any of the dogs tried to help themselves. All three girls had already had a plate full of food each. You can't even let the workd "food" enter your brain cells and China is right there. I'm glad Chuck and I aren't big snackers. It really does break my heart to see the "downside" of predisone. Every couple of hours I try to give her something to eat to help keep the extra "gimmy" away.

Other than the "pred hunger" China is doing really well. It is nice to have this time of fake good health and she got past my birthday and Christmas, which is what I prayed so hard for. Now with the New Year coming, I try to push back all the sad thoughts, because I will start the year with her, but will end it without her. Right now I'm forcing myself to think about the good things ahead in 2014 my great niece will be having her celebration of turning 15 in the Mexican Culture. (I know how to say what it's called, but at a loss how to spell it, so discription will have to surfice). I have a niece getting married Fourth of July weekend and her brother getting married at Christmas, so once we get past the sad beginning, the busy happy things will help push sad losses to the back. We'll see.

I am walking beside you, Helen...Heart cannot get enough food either!! (she was always a foodie, but NOW she is a foodalchie....she has been seen eating small rocks..    .!!!)

I think I am going totalk Dino into hand scissoring her coat. (He used to trim our beardie and Pearl, from time to time and he is pretty good at it.)
She is losing so much hair, maybe trimming it into a puppy cut will help. It seems that the white hair is more prone to the fallout, don't know why. I weighed her last week and she was down to 50 pounds, but I know she has lost more, so this weekend, I am going to get her weighed again. I am afraid to feed her too much! I don't want her to get an upset tummy from too much food.

Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated by both me AND Helen...)right Helen????? :D

Otherwise, Heart seems to be doing as well as China..just getting lots of love and attention...and more love!!!!!

Sorry I don't have any advice re: how much to feed although I do remember Rastus' appetite when he was on Pred for his dermatitis. I got shouted at by a lady at the off lead park because he wouldn't leave her alone. It was actually the treat bag around her waist that his nose was glued to.

I was kind of like 'Well if you were a treat bag to an off lead dog park you've got to expect some extra attention' but I chose discretion and kept that thought to myself.

I guess more frequent smaller portions will help but someone with more experience of dogs on Pred might be able to offer more advice.
for Helen,

Val and Helen,
having just read 4 articles about the appetite increase in dogs on prednisone and with cancer, all direct you to get advice from your vet only.

Yes, any advise would be welcomed. I've been giving China her normal food, but I've been giving her some little extra ever few hours. I, like you are concerned about her digestive track. She does help me eat my banana with me in the morning. I try and keep to healthy food. China and Asia got into it a little a bit this morning over Asia's breakfast. I was sitting right there and there was all kinds of conversation going on between the two, which has never happened before. I just told China that it was Asia food and to leave her alone. As soon as Asia was done I move her plate out and all was fine. I did notice China starting to relax more regarding the food this afternoon. Everything is packed away or thrown away. She's been watching me pack up Christmas and I think she thinks we're moving. oh well. Tough days.

I'm sorry to hear Heart's hair is falling out. I want to tell you Val, how much I admire your strength in all of this. You've been walking this road longer than I have been and it is a tough mountain to climb. I think of you, Dino and Heart everyday, and hope all is well.
Well, being a full blooded Italian, our answer to everything is to eat so it sounds like both dogs are doing okay :hearts: I continue to send prayers to both of you and your babies. We are always here for you and look forward to all the updates. May the new year be a happy one for you both. :ghug:
