Kongs and nighttime treats

The boys' toy box, a ~10 gallon copper pot, is in the den. When we go to bed we put all their toys, to include their Kongs back in it.

As we know, dogs are time-bound creatures of routine. Among our boys' routine is supper at 6:00 and evening treat at 8:00. About 5 nights a week the evening treat is a peanut butter filled Kong.

Last night about 8:15 I noticed both Kongs on the den floor. I thought my wife gave them peanut butter Kongs early and I didn't notice. I was mistaken.

At about 7:45 tonight we watched Dexter walk over to the toy box, pull a couple miscellaneous toys out and drop them at the edge then carefully take each Kong and place them in the center of the den floor. When they were next to each other he sat looking at my wife. He knew it was time!

They got their peanut butter a little early tonight!

What a smart boy!
Dex is soooo smart! Hope he doesn't tell all the other dogs..
Yes, they are creatures of habit. He was a smart boy...who can go to sleep without peanut butter taste in their mouth?
smart boy indeed! Helping his folks out so they don't have to dig through the bucket. :clappurple:

I assume you smear it inside the hole but not too deep?? I've only recently been giving K a Kong with PB. Doesn't occupy Kensie as long as I would like. Forget putting kibble inside, she gets bored with that and walks away. My fav with peanut butter it to smear it on roof of her mouth just behind the front teeth and watch her lick it off.
They get them pretty well packed and do a good job cleaning them out slick as a whistle. Win is with his about 10 minutes, Dex hangs in for a long time then they switch. Dex finally starts chewing on the side of one of them, smiling, like he's just enjoying the chewing sensation. It keeps them occupied for about 30 minutes. They have been doing it since they were puppies with no ill effect, of course the Kongs have gotten bigger. They both started with Kongs that look like a pacifier and went to their crate with it filled with peanut butter each night.

We like to just sit and watch sometimes, we love how they hold the Kong up with both front feet like hands. Pretty dexterous dogs. Hmmmm, maybe we should reflect that in a name?
I'm impressed on their tongues' ability to clean the interior. Either the large size is too large or someone here is lazy. I often have to wash out old PB from inside the Kong. It isn't a regular treat, just when I'm trying to get out the door without her.

They truly are amazing at telling time. Kensie has dinner time figured out, she must count the clock strikes. First Red Dot chase is night fall, second is two hours later. We were late with the second one last night. So she climbed onto the couch, walked across and stepped onto my chair and lap, "Hey, did you forget something??" After the second session she climbed onto the couch, cleaned her feet and went to sleep. How dare we mess us her routine.
I'm surprised how well they clean the inside of the Kong. Actually I think it is Dex that cleans them so well. It has been a learned skill; they have steadily gotten cleaner over time. We used to have to wash out residue from the bottoms now we do it periodically just to keep the yuck off them.
Ha ha! Dogs do know their schedules! My dogs usually go out for the last time about 9:30PM...if we happen to be staying up, or watching a show, they start pacing around, then stand by the door, then start barking...I tell my husband, we have a curfew around here!
