Small success!

Rescue dog small success: As you might know, Amy came to us from a rescue. In the rescue's foster home, she was not allowed to be in the family living spaces because she urinated when she was excited, nervous or scared. She went from crate to outdoors, back to crate. This was a better life than the one she had been rescued from though.

So Amy doesn't know how to "ask" to go outside. She just waits for Opal to ask to go out, or she waits for someone to tell her to go out. She never asks. Today, she went to the sliding glass door, stood by it and whined the faintest of whines. I asked her if she needed to go outside, as I walked to the door. She was so pleased with herself that she did her little Amy dance--completely adorable high-step prancy dance that she does when she is super happy. (She was so pleased, I was afraid she was going pee herself  )

Way to go, Amy!
Sounds like she may be ready for 'bell training'.

Vance
We tried bell training in our house a while back. It ended up with no one going out unless a human rang the bell first. Then, the younger cat decided that ringing the jingle bell in the middle of the night was a great way to let us know he didn't like the new cat food flavor.

Our nights went like this: ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. meooow, meooow. click, click, click, click (dog feet) hiss! yip! (no one likes a dog nose in the bum at 1 in the morning), "*#$% cat" (husband's opinion of the cat). "Go back to bed dog." "Aa! Stop that!"(no one likes a dog nose in the bum at 1 in the morning) "Stupid bell" (husband's opinion of bell).

I thought maybe I'd wait to reintroduce the concept until summer when the cat goes out all night.
Good job Amy!!!
Bad Cat
Great job! Doesn't sound like that foster home was a very good one...hope it is not used again.
:clappurple: Yay! Amy--good girl!
Fantastic Amy!
Isn't amazing, even after a couple of awful experiences, that, with your kindness, love and patience Amy is able to 'try again' to trust????? How wonderful is that?????????

Thanks! We had another success today. Amy barked to be let back in this morning. She was really polite about it too. One bark at the door and then she sat down to wait for someone to open it. I generally go back to bed until the dogs want back in, so its nice that she's not depending on Opal to tell us she wants in.

She's so cute when things like this work out. She does her little Amy dance and is so happy. I wonder if perhaps she's training us. We get a happy dance when we figure out what she wants. Just like she gets praise and pets when she figures out what we want.

The key is learning how to communicate with each other - and it sounds like you're all figuring it out! Congratulations on another success! I'm so happy Amy has found such a loving, patient home with you!
