Oops!

At home the boys get brushed a little almost every day and get on the table about once a week. We have lost that routine in the RV.

They got baths yesterday and Dex's shoulders and neck are so matted I couldn't brush it out while I dried him!

Leash and collar compounded the mats.

We will be home in 5 days and have lots of work ahead of us!

Yikes. Scissors are your friend. :D

Oscar stays clipped year round, so the only hair I keep long enough to mat is on his ears. Since he LOVES to rub the sides of his face on the carpets, we tend to get a few mats. I used to painstakingly comb them out. Now, I just get out the scissors. I'm happier, and he's happier. :D

The moral of the story is to never bathe an OES before it is completely brushed out! :headbang:
How wise is Nita???????

Heart doesn't mat too much, :phew: :phew: I am able to brush once a week, although, I should do it more often....

Can't wait to see the 'after' pics~~~~~
Wisdom? Yeah, right... Just happen to learn some things the hard way. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
I can usually easily brush out light mats when I dry him, i brush as I blow; light mats come out and he seems to dry much quicker. I didn't realize how bad his mats were until I started washing.
Opps, been there!
We've all been there, rain, snow, licking tongue on legs, moisture in general can create havoc. I've got those multiple tiny mats in Kensie and a mess on the ear flap. I need table time, oodles of conditioner and probably scissors. Geez, and I just got her hair long enough to pull up into bands.
Sprockets ears dip into the massive water bowl that he lives to dring oout off so have to keep ear flap ends trimmed!x
Yep, ears can dip too. We really must find a way to pin back the ears like we do the fall over the eyes.

Kensie is a major drooler.......woe be if she's done to the water bowl and then comes and sits and watches me cook, hopeful for tidbits (she loves raw Brussels Sprouts). There's a major puddle on the floor from her.

It is snowing this a.m. Fortunately neither cares to go outside except for necessaries. The brief time K was out, she brought back more water for the floors. I haven't looked at her coat, I brushed her out--partially-- last night so hopefully not much damage.
I spent ages brushing Bailey out to go to kennels. He looked beautiful all puffy and white.
When I came home I was informed that - they had to bath him because he was covered in mud from romping up the country lane at the back of the kennels. Ugh!!
Now he has massive tats all down his neck from the collor down to the top of his front legs! I was sooo :headbang:

I have to start over! The girl at the Kennels just smiled and told me I would have to take him to the groomer - she said her friend would groom him out as he would loose the coat and she "didn't want to upset him by cutting it all off"! Anyhow I told her we groom ourselves and he had already had a puppy cut and was fine with it but that was in the summer. It is freezing here and I would bnever cut our dogs this time of year. Needless to say the poor boy has been force groomed to within an inch of his life and still there are mats round his neck and weve been home 10 days. I have learned that water makes the tats worse and that you can use scissors and cut up ways from skin to end of hair through mats to break them up and not lose length. It is a long job but worth it in the end. I love grooming. Bailey being young and full of energy is not as convinced! lol :)

Indeed, that's why they must be mat free before bathing or else it gets worse. Think felt. If you dog takes to water like a spaniel, think about short hair permanently.

Did you massage some conditioner into the mats before beginning grooming? Helps the process.
Used a detangler spray as well as Ice on Ice. It took several rounds but he is completely mat free now with very little loss of hair!

We will pay more attention to brushing even on the road!
My sister sprays her dog with something called Main and tail that she uses on the horses. She says it is great and the tats just brush out of her long haired old collie. Also when it is out in the fields getting muddy when the hair dries the mud just falls off instead of clotting up.

Oes - I will have to find some here and try it.
Be careful of the detangler sprays. When the groomer used to use them on Oscar, I would nearly kill myself slipping on the tile where he would lay in the foyer. I looked like Bambi on ice! :D

Now that Oscar is older and having trouble walking on slick surfaces, I could never use the detanglers again. He'd never be able to get up! Or stay up!

Good advice, Laurie! Thanks!
