Sleeping in the doorway of my bedroom

Endearing herding instinct or dominance gesture? It didn't bother me but had my poor kitty practically crawling up the walls. . .

I think it's protection. Tasker always sleeps on my side of the bed (on the floor) unless one of my kids is home. When the kids are home he sleeps halfway between the bedrooms. I think it makes him feel like he "guarding" us!!!!
Jasper sleeps either in our doorway or on my side of the bed too. :) I can't count the number of times the kids have woken up in the middle of the night to come in our room & have tripped over him.
Hendrix is the same way, but I always thought it was because it was a tile floor and it was cooler for him.
Norman and Carl both do it. One at the foot of the bed, the other at the side. Halfway through the night they switch.
Toby was supposed to be sleeping in his kennel. I have come home from work numerous times now to find him curled up in bed, with my husband! Apparently he knows who the softy is and will cry to get out of the kennel on nights that I work.
They are evil geniuses! Only took him about a week to figure out how to work the system.
Smart boy, that Toby is
Clyde either sleeps on the floor on the side of my bed with the fan blowing in his face or half in/half out of the bathroom-- half tile/half carpet.
Beau now sleeps on the kitchen floor, which is tile. He's sleeping all night which makes me happy. :D
Beau sleeps in the hall leading to the bedrooms. Since he can be quite grumpy Luke and Rosco won't try to get past him. For some reason he lets Daisy do whatever she wants. Woe is Rosco if he falls asleep in my bathroom, he'll bark until someone gets up to get him past Beau :D Luke flops out wherever, Rosco and Daisy sleep on top of the ac vents in the floor
Panda sleeps on my side of the bed till about 11 pm, then she moves to the doorway til about 2, then she sticks her wet nose in my face and wants out for the rest of the night....
Sounds quite normal. With 6 furkids, the floors are littered at night. I'm sleeping in several spots at night trying to get comfortable. With each move I get at least one k9 companion moving with me. Simone sleeps next to husband on the bed, period. The other five vary, but all put them selves between us and potential trouble. As a result the doors, hall, etc are littered. I must put on glasses for nocturnal wanderings least I trip over one or all.

Since we didn't home last night until 2 a.m. I opted to sleep in. Thankfully dogs decided to pick on husband this a.m. So I snuck into bed, figuring it would be ALL MINE! Ha! With 10 minutes I had all three sheepies on the bed with me........and Jack takes a lot of room.
Wow, I must be the meanest mom in the world because Bailey sleeps in his crate. However, during the day he does have a tendency to stretch out right in front of the door to my office and nap. He's in the hall, so he's on the cool tile, but positioned so that I have to step right over him to go to the kitchen. I don't think of it as a dominance thing, it's more of a Food Alert.
Bob sleeps in his crate in our room too. He'll only sleep if I'm in bed though. He makes my husband nuts if he tries to put him in before I go to bed!! My Bob loves me so!! hee-hee

Karen
roo changes positions constantly in the night, which used to drive me nuts because i am a very light sleeper. He and my other pooch have matching (in fabric, not in size LOL!) bowser beds on the floor. He starts out there, then he'll lay in front of the door, slams himself against it actually, so that the laundry thing bounces off the door, then he'll lay in front of the closet, then on my computer mat, and eventually winds up back in his bed. Sometimes I find him stretched across both beds - much to the dismay of Blossom when she wakes up in the morning and finds the monster snuggled up against him!!

i dont let the dogs sleep in my bed, it's only a twin... blossom used to literally kick me out of the bed, pummeled me until i either fell off or had to curl in the fetal position in a corner between the wall, and i'm afraid roofus would smother me while i slept!! (mommy, why aren't you moving? Hey, let's make a doggie pile!!)
This discussion was unexpectedly interesting! Situation has improved at my home because I put a really comfy featherbed in the corner opposite the door. Chumley loves it and doorway is free for Miles (the cat) to come and go. She goes up to it when I am getting ready to leave for work and she trys to lure me up there in the evening towards bedtime.

Bailey's Mom -- there's nothing mean about a crate! I just couldn't introduce one to an 8.5 year old dog -- that would be too much change, I think.
I used to let Dancer sleep with us, but when we got Sky both girls had to sleep in their crates, otherwise we'd lose an eye with the romping around on the bed.
Today I bought a floor fan for my office. We use evaporative cooling instead of AC  and this time of year as the humidity gets above 50%, the evap cooling doesn't work. Anyway, I'm dieing from the heat. I thought I was the only one!

I turned on the fan and immediately 3 sheepies are in the room in front of the fan, sniffing the new item. Jack opens his mouth and realizes he's getting cool so flops down on the floor right in front of the fan. The other dogs look at me, "Make him move, he's taking all the air." Does this mean each dog needs their own fan now??

I keep dropping the "we probably need a new furnace so why don't we add AC at the same time" whine, but I'm not getting anywhere. So for the next 6+ weeks I'll suffer until cooler weather comes sometime in Sept.
Sheepieboss, You dont have a/c at all??? Bless you, It was 114 today and I cant imagine not having a/c... Panda and I just got done playing in the sprinklers :D Do you have that much humidity already...ours is only at 15% right now...did you get rain from the hurrincane? The fan story reminds me of when I was a kid....of course have the twin sis...we shared a room, our brother had his own room...In MI we didnt have a/c just a stupid thing called an attic fan...big whoop....Todd had his own fan...but Lisa and I had to share a fan...Picture twin beds...with a box fan set EXACTLY between the beds....every night, Lisa and I would fight over who got more air...I have asked my mom a million times since then, why she never bought another fan....she never thought about it ... by the way...she and my dad had a wall a/c in their bedroom all to themselves...
We are starting to pick up moisture up the mountain range, filtering over from Texas. It's not continual monsoon conditions yet, but we are getting the big fluffies in the afternoon sky.....rain to the east of us, not just verga.

We are in a hell hole here, our high was over 100.....I had one thermometer at 108, but it always reads high. Night temps are starting to stay up, city was 75, we were 68. Of course nothing compares to AZ in August..........110 day, 90 at sunrise! I take my hat off to you guys.

No AC, because we are so dry, the evaporative coolers work great until mid July thru mid Sept. I may live in the car...or the mall....or a movie theater.

Sprinklers early a.m........4 if I can manage it. With afternoon clouds we get a lot of outflow winds making sprinklers less efficient. (we do try to let MO have some time in the sprinklers 2 or 3 times a week) But then you know about outflow winds!!! That stuff that comes up from the southeast is awful!! How do people keep their pools clean with all that grit in the air?
I wouldnt know...we dont have a pool  Panda and I have sprinkler time...but our wind comes from due west and it is HOT and HORRID!@!! It was 111 at 6 pm tonight!!! Like a hot hairdryer on high...yuck!! evap only works until mid july here, then, whamo, if you dont have a/c, youre SOL....
I'm surely SOL  I didn't realize swampers were still in use down there!
I wish our house still had one....it was built in 1944...a real antique out here.....when they remodeled before we bought it, they had the swamp changed to just a/c....swamp saves you soooo much money on electricity...oh well!! In a way, we're sol here too!! :D
Sorry to break up the conversation here...lol
My first Sheepie, Daisy used to sleep in the hallway to protect her herd. She could keep an eye on all the bedrooms this way :D

We have sundowner winds here and we are also in a blow sand area. The wind blows between 15 and 40 mph every night.
The way we keep our pool clean is a poolvac Robot and a Solar Cover at night :D My house is literally on the edge of the desert and sand is on everything.. even in the house. You dust and two minutes later everything is coated again  Fun Fun Fun!!! Especially for someone who hates dusting.
We need to invest in a swamp cooler....I know that would help with our A/C bill at least for part of the summer

Elissa
You realize ladies most people on this list don't have the faintest idea about a swamper.........they live in humid areas. I tip my hat to them.....I can't do it!

Elissa........I chatted with Mary and learned you are very lucky to have Pepsi!! Mary wanted him for herself.
SheepieBoss, Yes, Mary did want him, but felt we would be a good home for him. I did e-mail her about another male in the area but I guess at that point they decided not to get another.

Elissa
Hey Elissa, Why are you typing....I thought you were supposed to be cleaning :D Its supposed to be 114 today again...yuck!!
Thanks Darcy :D I am pretty much done on the cleaning. I got 99% of it done already it's just straightening up now and I'm too hot. Billy makes me keep it 80 in the house during the day 8O
We are supposed be 116 today! 8O
Im not allowed to touch the thermostat...every time I do, it breaks... 8O I dont know why....its set at 78, but it reads 81....old houses leak like sieves....
With the humidex here it is almost 110 with 55% humidity, that is rising and supposed to be up to 74% by tonight.... yuck! Can I have snow back?
Stacey....
Wow that is very humid! I feel sorry for you...but or you sure you want snow back or would 70 degrees be good. I'd take 70 in a heartbeat!...lol
Stacie - that's similar to how it is here.

Right now, and it's been raining the past few days so it's cooled off, lol

Our temp is 88, our humidity is 70%, and the heat index is 99. The temps aren't so bad, it's the awful humidity that makes it worse. I told my husband that we needed to go visit his grandparents in Lake Havasau City, AZ! lol They may have higher temps, but it feels pleasant since there's no/little humidity.
Here in NE PA we get horrible humidity, too. But that, on top of 90+ deg days we've been having this past week makes for some very uncomfortabe living if you don't have A/C.

So ladies - just what IS a swamp cooler?? 8O

Chris
Chris,
I pulled this off the internet
Q: What the heck is a swamp cooler and how does it work

A: A swamp cooler (more formally called an evaporative cooler) is essentially a large box-like frame containing a big fan and walled in by water-wetted pads, usually made of cedar shavings or cellulose. The fan whooshes the hot outside air through the dripping pads (which are continually soaked by a water pump), cooling the air by about 20 ºF as the air evaporates water molecules from the pads. The fan then blows the water-cooled air through the house and out a deliberate vent.

Wet the back of your hand -- then blow on it. Your skin surface feels cooler. That's evaporative cooling.

Folks differ on why it's called a swamp cooler. Some say because it makes the house feel like a muggy swamp-but that's only when the late summer rains come and the cooler is less efficient. On dry days-which is almost every day in a desert-a swamp cooler works fine. In high humidity areas, like Washington D.C., they don't work at all because the water does not evaporate appreciably and thus the air is not cooled.

Swamp coolers are popular in the southwest because they are relatively inexpensive, use a quarter as much electricity as a refrigerated unit, are easy to maintain by the average do-it-yourselfer, and add a comfortable level of humidity to the dry desert air. The smell of fresh cedar pads on the first hot days of summer is delightful.
Oh Stacey, that's awful! We are only 93/22%. Inside 80/53% because swamper is on. 3 sheepies and their mom parked in front of the new fan....and one in her underwear  (thankfully no camera on computer) Yesterday I stopped at the little market around the corner and we agreed, snow doesn't sound so bad right now.
Wow, that's neat! I had never heard of one either.... and it certainly wouldn't work here... but still a neat idea!
Well, that description sure made them sound nifty! There are down sides too, one already mentioned the higher humidity in the house......which you folks back east and down south would laugh at as a "dry" day. They don't cool 20 degrees, more like 10-15 unless you really monitor your windows, doors etc. You have to leave the windows open somewhat to allow the air to move out for the cooling.......remember you are pumping air indoor from the fan. So with open windows comes dust.

As the Monsoons come in mid July.....humidity above 50% and better chances for rain.....not guarantee, just chances........the evaporative cooler doesn't work.

Also near the end of the season things get a little stinky. All I can think of is Legionaire's Disease. While they do take less electricity.....afterall it is only a fan and small water pump, it does take a fair amount of water......especially if you have one of the newer types like we have. As a result, Albuquerque is hinting it would be better if people tripled their electricity bill with the AC and save some water. Of course Albuquerque metro is growing so quickly there are electricty concerns. Oh well.
The whole idea makes me laugh because, living not far from water in Michigan (then again, no one lives far from water in Michigan) humidity is the evil enemy of summer. Today I stepped out my building to go to lunch and was hit with what felt like a hot, damp blanket. Moisture is one thing we never have a shortage of!
That's very interesting that swamp cooler!! I like the idea of the nice cedar scent. We have central air ( but I don't like to say that outloud because everytime I do - it breaks!) so we like to hide out inside or go take a jump in the pool. My personal feeling on the snow is "bite your tongue" whoever said they'd take it back!! This winter killed me digging out to my car what felt like every other day. I'm not ready for that again! hee-hee-hee

Karen
As much as I complain about how hot it is...I'd rather be too hot than too cold!! 19 yrs in MI was enough for me!!
I do agree hot is better than cold....BUT!!! Yes that is a BIG BUT!
We hit a Record High today of 120...talk about gross! lol
OMG....120....???!!! Youre right there is a limit and thats it!!! Your BIL should be thankful that it is only 114 here today :D DRY HEAT...yet its funny Panda is panting like a mad dog, yet she has herself shoved up against my leg....go figure!!

If ya have problems with it, you can ask my hubby. He has been an H/VAC technician for over 10 years now. He did it 4 years in the AF and took a civil service job with the AFB, where he's been for nearly the last 7 years. He controls the h/vac computer system on base now (which is why he works rotating shifts), but he still remembers a lot about the field since he did it so long & still helps them out when they're shorthanded back there. :)
Gail,
My Hubby has his HVAC license and Is also a Licensed Plumber :D
He's really handy to have around. I think I'll keep him for a while...lol

Darcy,

It's Billy's Best Friend that is out there by you... He's also named Billy..lol
I don't even think he can handle 114. He is a VERY Big Guy!!! I think He's about 5'6" and well over 300 lbs, I'd say closer to 400. He's the guy you'd see in the middle of the winter riding down the freeway on his Harley with a sleeveless shirt on
All the dogs are inside... Pepsi found a ball when I rearranged the furniture. So he's been running around in here squeaking the squeaker...
Hmm I wonder why Hayley is not napping? lol
Elissa
Did Hayley get a nap in at all? Squeak, squeak, squeak.....Panda has several of those......Tell me about your room..pm me..
No nap yet... Poor Mommy hasn't even been able to take a swim...
Crazy hubby is in the backyard working... It has cooled down a bit 113 lol

Elissa
Thanks Gail!! We've basically been told it's a really bad system and needs to be replaced. We just moved here last year - and you just wouldn't believe how many things have ended up being replaced!! On top of it, my husband is a far as you can get from being handy!! I'll let you know if it goes again. Knock on wood, it's worked all summer this year so far. (It was going down every couple weeks last year). Sorry, I've babbled off topic!
Bob sleeps in a crate in our room, but he seems like he's been getting really hot in there the past few nights so I've been bringing him down to the kitchen so he can sleep on the tile floor. I feel bad I can't let him have the run of the house but he still has very untrustworthy bodily functions!!!!! Pooped in the hallway before his bath last night!!!

Karen
Well, let's see... Temps raise around 120 here in El Paso/Juarez area. Evaporative coolers were the rage around here, but when we bought our house we decided to but a furnace/AC combo and I'm never going back to the swamp coolers. A/C is much more efficient and it does not have to be on all the time... I like entering the house and get the cold air feeling you get when you go inside the mall :D

Lennon and Sofa like to sleep on each side of the bed. Sofa on my side and Lennon on Danita's side. Around 3:00 AM they move to their official guard posts, Sofa in the hallway looking to our door and Lennon downstairs, guarding the stairs and the main entrance from a cave formed by to couch corners... He's made that his Den and loves to hang out there. The have full run of the house except for Danita's studio... but sometimes all they want do do is romp around the house :?
