Meet Walter

Hi everyone!

We finally brought our (not so) little oes home :clappurple:

This is Walter, he's 10 weeks old (as of 3/11/13) He has one brown eye and one blue eye, and is growing bigger by the day!

He's settling in well, and is very good in the day. But he isn't a big fan of the nighttime regime (barking/howling/crying almost every hour, inbetween sleeps) But it's only day 5 of him being here, hopefully he will settle down soon :crossed:

We are thinking that he could possibly be deaf. He doesn't seem to respond to any noise, no matter how loud or sudden. Even squeeky toys, and all the fireworks that have been going off lately. But we will see what the vet says when we are there this week for his vaccination. But no matter what he'll still have a good home here with a loving family

Does anyone have any experience with a deaf dog? Any tips/advice?

Walter is a cutie. Welcome from Florida!
What a cutie! Yes, there are several deaf dogs here. Info on the web and actual books will help. A trainer with experience will be invaluable!

Some days I sure want a deaf dog, like during fireworks and storms!
He's a adorable!
Welcome.

Yes there are a few folks on the board that have experience with deaf dogs. I hope they'll chime in.
Welcome! Walter is an adorable little guy!!
Adorableness to the extreme!

Good luck at the vet. You have good resources here, for both sheepie-raising and deaf dogs, so don't be hesitant to ask away!
Walter is a cutie!!! Welcome to the forum.

If he is deaf, you are getting an early start on being able to assist him. The people here with this experience are very helpful.

More pictures please!!!!
Congratulations on bringing Walter into your family! There are lots of tips for training hearing-impaired dogs on http://www.deafdogs.org/
Welcome, Walter is adorable.
Thanks everyone :)
We are at the vets tomorrow for his second vaccination so we'll see what he says about the deafness. Someone said it could just be ear mites and he needs treatment, but we're pretty convinced that he's totally deaf

I'll check out that website, thanks!

It's been a week now, he's still barking/howling/crying at night, but he seems to be getting a bit better with it
:hearts: :hearts: Walter is such a cutiepie :hearts: I always want to hug, kiss and snuggle with puppies. Ok, I like to do the same with the big ones too! :hearts: :ghug:
My dogs, even as puppies were in my room at night so they knew they were part of the pack. I did have a collapsible crate in there so they couldn't get 'busy' during the night.
Good luck at the vet and like others have stated, lots of information on this site regarding deaf dogs. And they do well. Congratulations to you and Walter! :yay: :yay: :hearts:
Hi Walter. He sure is beautiful no matter what. Summer and Tilly say Hi from Northampton UK xx

Hello, Walter..(LOVE his name!)...Welcome to you, Mrs.C from St. Louis Missouri!!!

Well,,,,there is nothing to say but.....HE IS ADORABLE!!!!!!

I agree..MORE pictures, please... :plead:
He was a good boy at the vets, healthy weight etc. She agreed with us about thinking he's deaf (although all she did was clap her hands and see there was no response). She did tell us about a test, where they wire him up and play beeps into his ears and monitor the brain waves. We don't want to put him through all that, and at the end of the day it won't make any difference- we pretty certain that he's deaf, we don't need to have it confirmed by putting him through something so stressful

He's doing well, we've been teaching him some signs and he can already do sit, paw, lie down and fetch the ball. Very proud of him :)
Sure is a cutie! When we got bloo ar 10 weeks we thought he was deaf too just turned out hes a stubborn mutt but worth checking it out to nake sure hes ok :-) You can still do everything with deaf dogs I know of someone who does both advanced agility and obedience with her deaf dog its all hand movements. Telling them off is hard though she points her finger at him to do thisnkind of thing...yeah
And did I mention how adorable he is!!!! :-D
