Rant: Dogs being interchangable

This is a major rant about a couple of my family members. Unfortunately they live on the opposite coast so there is nothing I can do but offer advice but it usually falls on deaf ears. I'm not sure where they got this behavior because my aunt (their mom) is a veterinarian and she certainly doesn't behave this way with her dogs.

First my cousin gets a puppy that is mixed breed. 1/4 lab, 1/4 pit, 1/2 heeler. The puppy displayed massive herding drive. Running after their son, running in front of him, tripping him, biting his ankles, etc. His wife freaks out and thinks it's the pitbull in him and this pup is a horrible dog. I tried to explain that this is all normal for a herding breed type and dogs like that need a lot of exercise, constant mental stimulation and tons of training. Nope, it's part pit so the puppy (4 months) just "snapped", they got rid of it.

Next they get a husky/lab mix and breed it. End up with all these puppies, decide to move and can't take even the mom with them. They get rid of the dog because we all know that a dog can't take a move two states away....

So his sister takes 2 of the puppies and in the process gets rid of her dog so she can have these two puppies. I tried to tell her about littermate syndrome and even the best trainers usually don't do this but she is a "better trainer" than them. They are 10 weeks old and one has a barking issue. I tell her to try training the puppy to speak, then you can train the puppy the quiet command. Positive reinforcement. I even posted simple step by step training videos. Her solution? to spray the puppy in the mouth with vinegar every time it barks or throw a can of pennies to scare it every time it barks. If that doesn't work she is going to use a shock collar. :headbang: :headbang:

These poor pups are being set up to fail before they even had a chance. They will end up in a shelter soon. Sometimes I can't believe I am even related to these people.

Why did they breed the dog.... how do they get rid of them so easily... sorry I wouldn't have a lot of kind things to say about your relatives.... :|
I'm sorry I read your post. I too have nothing nice to say about your family.........ignorance, selfishness, and worse. Thankfully you are a shining beacon of reason.
Thanks sheepieboss. I wasn't looking for nice things to be said about them at all. I really needed to b!%ch.
B!T@$ away. To many dogs/pets are just things......to be discarded at will.

To see a "crushed" animal after being abandoned and the "joy" they develop when they have a new family or love makes we wonder about those who tossed them away. Kensie is a totally loving, happy dog who tries so very hard to please.
I understand your need to rant. We have similar rants about my DH's parents. They insist on having a dog (or 2 or 3) at all times although the only attention they ever give them is to feed and water them. :( They have a lab mix that is 13 who is starved for attention, but is so unsocialized, we have a hard time being near her when we visit. They live next to a major highway. They have an invisible fence on their property which the lab was trained to, but say it's too much work to put the flags up, so when they get a new cute little puppy, they just don't bother to train it in the fence. They put a dog house on the porch and expect a young, curious puppy to stay in the back yard and not roam to the road. :headbang: :headbang: Inevitably, the puppy goes to the road and gets run over. Their way of dealing with it is to bury it and go to the animal shelter and get another puppy or two!!! 8O

When we were there last summer, we met her two new puppies. She had only had them a week. We were there two days. The day we left, we got a text from her a couple of hours after we left saying that one of them was dead. Seriously, something is messed up in their brains and I'm just happy it didn't spread to the rest of the family!

When she saw Sam's first pics that Amber sent us of the litter, Chris' mom said they were adorable and that we should get her one for Mother's Day. :twitch: Yeah, right. Forget the money, I wouldn't give her a stuffed animal to treat that way!

Sorry to highjack your rant.
Please don't take this as me judging what you should do with your families. :plead: Just saying that I think I would become estranged with my family over such terrible treatment of dogs. I would tell them I want nothing to do with them and exactly why. :(

Trust me, I understand. In our case, they live about 6 hours away, so we only see them a couple of times a year. The relationship is already strained for other reasons. I guess the way they treat animals in some ways mirrors the way they treat people (including each other). It's just so sad that people can be like that.

I don't take it as that. I see them every couple of years and never go over there to visit. Obviously for a reason.

Rant away!!
It stinks to have relatives, people we love who don't understand how to truly love an animal. You want them to understand so badly but they just don't get it. My sister and I have actually made a call to the humane society in our area so that a cousin of ours is no longer able to adopt around here. She also gets checked in on occasionally. She has done very similar things with dogs and switches them out for "new" dogs when they are either no longer cute or they start misbehaving or just sticks them outside on a chain all day and gets a new indoor pet. We had to turn it over to someone with higher authority and though she still can get dogs from petstores or byb's she can't take a shelter dog who has already had a hard life.
I would report them for cruelty or get someone to 'steal em'

That's how Maggie (our coonhound) made her way to us...she was "removed" by Mel (a friend of mine) who is an avid hunter and coonhound lover; and then when Todd needed a coonhound, she became ours. :D

All I can say is there are a lot of stupid people in this world, and a lot of stupid dog owners.
