Tucker is a COUNTER SURFER--- HELP!

Oh no! How can it be that I am raising a counter surfer? I about fell over when I walked into the kitchen and our perfect lil guy had his paws on the counter. BIG no-no here. I've never dealt with it, so, have no idea how to stop it. I know "feet on the floor" needs to be the rule, but how do I accomplish that??? :cow:

We didn't have countersurfers, but we did have furniture rule breakers. To enforce those when we weren't around, we basically booby-trapped the "no go" spots. We used empty soda cans with 10-15 pennies inside and balanced them on the seat cushions. When the dogs tried to climb up, they'd knock over the cans and startle themselves. I've also heard cookie sheets on the edge of the counter are pretty good for this, since they make lots of noise when they fall as well.

We're also exceptionally careful to be sure that nothing ever goes directly from the countertop to Benson's mouth. We fill her bowl off of the counter, and if she does get the occasional treat, we take it to the other side of the room and make her work for it before she gets it.

Good luck! This is a hard habit to break!
I think just set up Tucker to fail. 8) Put out bait on the counter to tempt him, watch him, when he goes to counter surf, "NO TUCKER, NO. YOU DO NOT COUNTERSURF!!" Sheepdog puppies hate being in trouble, make him know that countersurfing is big trouble!
I don't know about sheepie pups hating being in trouble. Lily didn't care about being in trouble. She still doesn't care most of the time.

Lily counter surfed like crazy as a pup. (this included the dining room table) We just stopped leaving stuff on the counter and implemented the no dogs in the kitchen rule.
Sam never counter surfs unless one of our cats gets on the counter. He knows they aren't supposed to be up there, so he takes it upon himself to enforce that rule. How do I fuss at him for enforcing Mommy's rules?

Poor Sam, he probably doesn't realize that cats are above the law. And he would probably be quite put out if he did! :D
The only thing that worked for Domino was a spray collar, it sprays a citronella spray at them and is controlled with a remote . We had to go something, we paid $400 for 4 private in home training sessions with a trainer and that didn't work. He was the worst he would steal steak knives, a pound of butter, food, anything even if it was in the sink. It took 2 sprays and he has never done it again. We were desperate, as hard as we tried to make sure there was nothing out the kids would leave it out....
Thanks for the suggestions. At the end of the day, I want him to know it isn't ok to counter surf anywhere... not just our house. Don't know if this will work, but last night when I was fixing supper, I laid a rug, ( that will become "his" spot) in the mud room, right off the kitchen. I told him "rug" and led him to it. "Sit" - "Stay". He got a treat. Everytime he would come and beg, or look like he was going to jump on the counter, I gave the "Rug" command... and would give him a bit of carrot. I guess what I'm trying to accomplish is him realizing he has to be on that rug for any kind of food in the kitchen. And that will be limited. Like Dawn said in another post, I really want us to be the reward for good behavior.

Am I doing this right? H*ll... I don't know. I just know how to love 'em, not train 'em.

He DID go right to the rug this morning... so maybe something stuck. Poor little guy, he has to deal with parents that have a baby late in life, and forget how to raise a kid. :)
Sounds great to me. You are anticipating the inappropriate behavior and channeling it into good behavior with a reward. Win - Win! For Oscar, the key to all training was being calm and consistent, no matter what. Even when you want to curse and scream and tear your hair out, which, with Oscar, was about every five minutes. :D He was such a rotten puppy!

Well, with Fozzie we tried a few things (aluminum foil on the counter, this square thing that has little prongs which is really for cats, a can with coins inside). Honestly, I'm pretty sure that Annie biting him when he tried it did the trick :)
I cannot help with this. My doodle is such a countersurfer, she needs to be a professional, lol. My sheepie knows he's not supposed to go up there, sometimes he will take a peek but he's usually good.

Layla on the other hand is like that wack-a-mole game. Off, up, off, up. She knows off and gets right down and won't get up there if you are watching, but 2 seconds later, back up.

Good luck!!
mr duffy hum 6 yrs later i have the cleaness counter in the world or if i leave and something is on it ...well mr. duffy will get it.. nipe it in the bud now funny thing is he never started till 3 yrs ago
hahah... I'm picture little Tuck trying to reach that apple crisp or banana pudding you make. Just....... a ........little.........closer..

We have to push all our plates in the middle of the table because old age has granted Yuki [in her head] the sudden right to help herself. No only means... wait until we go in another room. She's real smart. While we're in the room .....angel. Just the kids there, ...yep, she knows she can outsmart them ;)
