Shocked OMG!!!!!!!
Just love those economy sightseeing tours!
YIKES Shocked
I can't believe they let people on that beach...Did you read the sign that said--Caution Low Fying And Departing Airplane Dust Can Cause Injury--or something to that extent--DUH.
LOL cool.... Laughing
My Best Friend went to St Maarten a couple of years ago and took some pictures from the road pictured in the first shot... Crazy. The noise must be incredible.

WARNING!
LOW FLYING AND DEPARTING AIRCRAFT
BLAST CAN CAUSE PHYSICAL INJURY
Ron-
If you like aviation sites, check this one out........

I've been on that beach in St Maarten. It's an amazing experience, and more than a little scary. The reason there are so many people on the beach is that they only have a few flights a day, most of them smaller planes - it's definitely not O'Hare!

Sue
My sons would LOOOOVE that! lol

Lol. No, but I SAW the one that said TOPLESS WOMEN DRINK FREE!
Can I ask you a question? Is there ANYPLACE in the WORLD where that WOULDN'T happen? (Although I hear through the grapevine that sometimes they drink free and THEN become less inhibited, but I wouldn't know about things like that.)

Seems to me that's like saying "Old, fat guys have to pay for their own drinks."

Kinda obvious, no?
And here I thought runway 17 at Albuquerque was low! The end of the runway (now closed, drat) has a 9 hole golf course and golfers are warned to look up before they hit the ball!! Alas, 17 is longer than this runway, hence the pilots don't have to touch down on the edge.

Love the comment re: the economy tour!!

The shortest runway that I've landed on is on Saba, another Dutch island in the Caribbean. The runway is 400 meters long, they claim it's one of the shortest in the world. It's pretty scary - I'll post some pictures. Unfortunately Ron, the Dutch don't encourage topless female drinkers. It's the French on St Martin with the topless beaches Wink
Shocked Topless Beach?????? My son is going to a topless beach for his HONEYMOOM????? OH MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Tasker's Mom
Depends on where he's staying - the french side of the island allows topless sunbathing and even has one nude beach. On the dutch side there is no topless sunbathing. But it's a quick drive from the dutch side to the french side Wink
One of the world's shortest runways, 1300 feet. Talk about a scary landing!

OK...remind me not to fly there...lol
That is scary!! Shocked
No way, uuh huh...no no no..shake head vigorously from side to side...Id die before we even landed..its bad enough flying to Hawaii...Im white knuckled the whole flight....I dont care how pretty it is ( and it sure looks pretty) Ill sit in my bath tub and look at the post card.....kinda the same! I feel the same way about the Grand Canyon...if it looks that good in a picture, why do you need to get that close? Shocked
YIKES!
My son assures me they are headed for the Dutch side WHEW!!
(hhehehehehe, or so he says)
I'm with you guys- and I LOVE to fly! That's way scary! Does anybody know- is that a runway left from WWII? I seem to remeber a history channel special about the bombers taking off from this itty bitty runway, and some not making it... I could swear it looked just like that.... hmmm

Karen Smile

Ginny- I'm sure you won't need to worry about your son and the beaches on his honeymoon Laughing Embarassed Embarassed

Nope, it's in the Caribbean on the island of Saba, very close to St Maarten. Saba is a volcanic formation and just doesn't have much flat space. There are great stories about what they had to go through to build "the road" - if you look at the second picture you can see a bit of the road that snakes around to the left. It's a really charming island, has amazing scuba diving and fortunately you can also get there by boat from one of the bigger islands Very Happy

I love to scuba dive, and one thing you learn is that the harder the island is to get to, the better the diving!
It looks gorgeous.... I need to go to a beach... any beach.....lol....
I just arrived on Saba a couple days ago.

I was searching the net for "shortest runways" to see if there were many others shorter than this one. It was a great landing, and by the time we turned to taxi in, there was probably less than 100 feet left. Now that I live here I'm sure I'll be making that flight at least once a month to shop in St. Maarten. Looking forward to it!
Yikes is right.
Scary stuff eh?
This is just the best. Landing is a breeze. Take off may have a little dip at the end of the runway.
Yes, the pilots have special certification to be allowed to land here. Just means these are the best pilots around!!
Think I'd want a catapult for take off. Hopefully pilot figures the plane's weight down to the ounce!

Stepfather was test pilot for AF, one of the first to develop STO technique instead of using JATOs. Not much to it, but hell on brakes.

Believe those signs about blast from engines......didn't MythBusters just do an episode with a 747 and jet wash.......blew cars and buses apart at 100 feet as well as sending them flying.
