Neutering: What should we expect?

Hello,

Hendrix is getting neutered next week. What should we expect? Anything you think we should be aware of?

Hi Hendrix's mom,

Max will also be neutered next week (Tuesday). So let me know how things go for you. And I'll do the same!!

Sharon
I was all worried about Clyde because I had a horrible spaying experience with Lucy, but, I'll tell you, I don't think he had any idea that it even happened to him. He came home from the vet happy and bouncy as ever and in no pain. His stitches were minimal and healed very quickly. The most difficult part was keeping him calm enough so that he wouldn't jump up and tear out the stitches. In out experience, everything was really easy on him and went well.

Good luck!
Hendrix is getting neutered on the 14th, just 4 days shy of his 6 month birthday... poor guy.

Sharon - I will let you know how it go's with Hendrix.

Did Clyde need to wear that cone thing?
Nope, no cone. He never even touched the stitches. The first day he was interested in sniffing a bit but he never licked them.
I don't think we'll be that lucky, Hendrix is a licker. Great, I'll be the one on the block walking the coned dog...
Beaureguard was like Clyde in that he didn't act like anything had happened to him. But he was awful about his stitches. He had to wear the cone for the whole week until he healed.
Bailey just got neutered and had his umbilical hernia fixed, he gets his stitches out tomorrow. The neuter was just 2 or 3 little stitches, the hernia was more like 7. The day of his surgery he was a little loopy from the anesthesia. The next day he seemed a little needy - he's usually very independent and he stayed by my side the whole day. After that, he was back to his old self. We did have to keep an eye on him to make sure he didn't lick his stitches, but after the first few times we corrected him he seemed to give up and we didn't need a cone. He did take an anti-inflammatory for the first 10 days but I just put a little peanut butter on it and he loved it. The hardest part was keeping him calm the first few days (as Jill mentioned), and keeping him dry! The vet told us to keep him dry which is tough. Plus he hasn't had a bath in a few weeks - smelly puppy! Can't wait until the vet gives us the OK and we can bathe him. I wish someone had told me to give him a bath the night before the surgery!
Lol. To make matters worse, Clyde was still having a an occasional pee accident overnight so, we too, were counting down the days until he coould have a bath again!
I'm sure Max will be the one to pull stitches out if he can, seeing that his favorite activity outside lately is pulling up roots out of the ground
Good tip on giving him a bath the night before. We gave him a bath on Sunday, so I think he's good for now.
Barney got neutered at around 7 months and he was fine. He stayed the night at the vet's office and then we picked him up the next day. He was just as crazy as ever (we were hoping for a little calmer  )

He had to wear the cone  for about a week because he would not stop licking his stitches. He even liked the 'bad-tasting' cream they put on the area. He got used to the cone (I could not stop laughing the first time I saw him in it) but he just ran around, running into everything because he didn't realize he extended a few more inches than usual! He also learned to scoop up his toys with the cone and toss them into the air and catch them again...

The only 'medical' problem we had was that his wound was a little red (not infected or anything) but just inflamed a bit because he initially was licking it, then with the cone he learned how to scratch it with the cone, so we had to watch him for that. But the redness didn't last too long.

Just watch out for giant bruises on your legs from sheepie running into you!
Pepsi had no problems. I don't think he even realized what happened except he was away from me for a couple of hours and he didn't like that.
He was back to himself almost immediately.

Elissa
Sounds like it was successful for most of you.

Barney sounds hilarious! At least he made light of the situation!
Baley was neutered at 17months and he came through great. He slept more than usual the day after and after that he was back to his normal self. He didn't bother with his stitches at all and healed just fine.
Good luck, I know it makes us just a little uneasy when they have to go through it.
Well, Max happily went to the vet this morning and was so anxious to be seen that he barked his arrival until he was taken back to await his neutering, poor guy, if only he knew! Anyway, I miss the big goofball, but we will pick him up tomorrow morning after 10, and hopefully he'll be just fine!!

Sharon
I'm sure he'll be just fine. Keep us posted!

Jill
My biggest fear after the neutering was that he'd associate the vet's office with a negative experience and be one of those dogs that hates to go to the vet. Not our Bailey! When we took him back for his post op checkup he hopped right out of the truck and trotted on in to see his many admirers. Such a ham!
That's good to know Bailey's mom, Max has always loved going to the vet so I was also concerned today that this might be the last time he'd be so excited to go to the vet, but I know they'll fuss over him and hopefully that will be what he remembers!!
Hendrix's big day is tomorrow, i'll let you guys know how it goes.
Okay, Hendrix's mom, here is what Barney looked like with his cone

He was so funny. He could eat and drink with it on fine, but he looked like a vaccuum! And, he would walk with his head hanging down sometimes so that the cone would brush the floor (again looking like a vaccuum!). He looked so silly, and it didn't seem to bother him. He would use it to scratch his wound, or he would lay the cone against his belly and lick and lick and lick, thinking he was licking his wound...

I'm sure Hendrix will do fine, and if he does end up having to have the cone, it may look funny, but it isn't really a big deal! :)
I've got my paws crossed for him (and for me 8O )*

*Too many women in this thread....
Ron, I think you would look absolutely lovely with a cone around your neck. Hope all goes well for Hendrix tomorrow.
Good luck tomorrow Hendrix, I'm sure things will go just fine!! I picked up Max this morning around 11:30 and he had been in an outdoor dog run, barking nonstop, he was so happy when he saw us!! Everything went very well, I guess the vet and staff were just cracking up at Max when he was under sedation, because he resembled a big stuffed floppy animal. He was so happy to get in the car and go home, he ate and drank and pooped!! He seems to be a little uncomfortable as he'll run in a circle and then get comfortable and lie down. He's in his crate now having a nap. I'm surprised at how active an afternoon he has had! Anyway, this hasn't been so bad at all, take care Hendrix,

 Sharon
Glad to hear that Max is doing well after his surgery! :D
Hi Barney's mama...
Coneheads are such a hoot! The goofy clown factor just goes up a few notches
Could you pleeeese tell me where you got the nice looking wooden gate Barney is using as a prop!
I have one of those flimsey ones that you have to put back up everytime a person passes through.....what a drag
Thanks y'all!
Diane
I dropped him off, he was in hysterics at the vet because he saw his first cat! His barking at the cat and jumping reminded me why we were at the vet in the first place.

When I dropped him off they said that the vet likes to perform this optional urine test and she told me all the things it checks for. It was $24. I always feel like if I say no that I'm a bad doggie parent. I figure $24 is worth finding out something that could cost more in the end. Is there any book or website that details all these things out?

I also added on the microchip. We're going to have a VERY expensive visit today.

Does Max have to wear the cone?

I wish I could! I think they were actually custom-made for our house by the previous owners, who had a large chocolate lab. (They are also the reason we have that nice doghouse in the backyard too!).

We found the gates in the garage right before we got Barney. They are pretty simple. Just sturdy wood glued and nailed together, and then we put it on a swinging hinge (we used more than one hinge to be safe) and it is on a big roller that allows it to roll over the tile and wood floor. I wish I knew more!
Hi Barney's mama...
That's why the gate looks so GOOD...custom made! Gee, the ones in the stores look ugly! I emailed the pix to my hubby at the office...thought for sure I had found the one...Hmmm...maybe he can make one in his free time 8O
Thanks!
Give those coneheads an extra hug...it's tough even if just for a short while
Diane...it is all for the love of a sheepie
Well, I picked up Hendrix yesterday. Man when the vet walked him out of there he walked like a different dog. He was still REALLY drugged up and was like that the whole night. When I took him out of the car he walked into the side of the house! I had tears in my eyes, feeling guilty for putting him through it.

The rest of the night he just slept and looked at the wall. When I took him into the backyard our neighbor (who takes Hendrix out for us during the day) couldn't believe how different he was acting.

Today he's MUCH better. He's barking and wants to romp around but still sleeping a lot. The vet said we should take him out in the back yard on a leash and shouldn't have him running or jumping for 10 days. She said that will be the toughest part.

ALSO -- The vet told me that we wouldn't have to have Hendrix wear a cone unless he's licking it a lot. She suggested since he doesn't have a tail that we put some shorts, briefs or boxers on him instead. Needless to say Hendrix is a licker and is wearing my biking shorts around the house. He doesn't mind wearing them, however, he leaves the room all the time to try and lick through it. I will take pictures for all of you to have a good laugh at.
I'm glad to hear he's doing well. And yes, please do post photos! :D
Glad to hear Hendrix came out good! Max also is not wearing a cone, he was licking a little, but I've checked his stitches and he looks just fine. It seems like today Max is really back to his normal behavior, although I enjoyed yesterday because he actually dozed around the house much more than he usually does, and today he's been very very active, I took him on a nice walk this morning and he really enjoyed it, so I'll just take him back for stitch removal in a week or so. I wonder if Max would look good in a pair of boxers? I might put some on him and see,

Sharon
We took Hendrix back to the vet yesterday because we noticed some swelling. They gave us some anit-flamitory medicine and said that when we're not watching him the cone will have to be on.

The poor thing, we put it on him for an hour to get used to it and he would walk into a wall and think he was stuck on something and just stand there till we till we freed him up. He wore it when we slept last night, I don't think he got very good sleep because he's SOO tired today.

So, now you'll have pictures of him in shorts and pictures of him with the cone. I hope this is one quick week!
Here are the pictures of Hendrix and his new "accessories"

This is the face Hendrix gave us before the shorts or cone went on...

Finally, Hendrix and the dreadful cone. I hate that thing too!

I love those shorts on him. For some reason it really struck me funny!
He has little chicken legs! We were tempted to get him underoos!
Underoos would have been classic!!!!!!!!
The shorts are hilarious. Hope it helps.
my cockapoo puppy was neutered today. He is licking his stiches a bit, but not much. Since he'll be alone some tomorrow, I wanted to see how the cone worked. He completely freaked out when I tried to put it on. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make putting it on easier on him?
Allison, Hendrix is one gorgeous dog. I love his markings and he has the warmest eyes! Bailey was on anti-inflammatories too, hopefully that will help and the cone will be off soon :D
Hendrix hates when the cone is even in our hands, it takes 2 of us to get it on him. When we put it by him he gets a treat and after we have it on him he gets another treat.

I think he likes wearing the shorts though, he knows how to step right in them and out of them. All he needs is a surf board now!

Bailey's Mom --- Thanks! Hendrix has these human like eyes, he's like our little toddler.
He really does have human eyes - it's amazing!! I would love to watch a dog who knows how to put a pair of shorts on!!!!!!!!!

Karen
Allison,
You've inspired us!

Wow! I'm touched! When my vet told me about it I thought it really couldn't hurt to try it. I like it much better then the cone. We still put the cone on Hendrix when we're gone for the work day though.

The vet did say that the shorts or briefs on a dog work the best when a dog isn't an obsessed licker. Some dogs will lick right throughout to get it drenched with saliva. Yuck!

You should put a patent on your invention!
