To Microchip or not to Microchip

Hello,

Just wondering what peoples feelings on the board are for mircochipping? Hendrix is going to be neutered in a couple weeks and the vet suggested if we wanted to microchip him then we should do it at that time.

Do you think it's worth $48.50?
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
Simple answer is yes. Quick procedure (if sticking with a needle is quick enough for you). And if you don't want to do it when he gets neutered, a vet tech can do it the next time you go in. No local is needed.

If you are concerned about the price, keep an eye out for other clinics/dog groups sponsoring a microship event. If you can find one, the price will probably be about $25 dollars.

All was worth it for at least my own piece of mind.
It is very quick, cheap (I paid $25 at a special clinic too), and know now that it is much harder for Henry to be lost, and more importantly harder for someone to steal him. I am a proponent.
What do you suggest I search on google for these clinics? I'm not sure what wordering would work.

Thanks for your help!
Not sure about Google, but since you are in the Chicago area, I know that there is a quarterly or monthly newsletter that's out for pet owners. Usually can be found at the dog parks in a newspaper box. Or you may be able to find it at your vet. It's about 20 pages max, and list all the comings and goings around Chitown for your pet.

After writting all that I googled for you (microchip, chicago, clinic) and founfd the newsletter (Chicagolandtails):

If you go down there is a clininc on Kedzie (Animal Ark Veterinary Clinic) that is doing it in August for $20. But if you get your hands on a hard copy there are plenty of ads.
Also this place does it always for $25.00:

I have had the last 5 of my dogs microchipped and I intend to have gair done too. Probably a few weeks after his jabs are finished. I am a proponent of chipping as it can help re-unite a lost dog a good bit qicker than most methods. It will also aid in provng ownership, if your pet is stolen and claimed by another person as their dog.
One snippet, though, there has been the sad tale of an unfortunate dog that was knocked down and killed on the road. The local authority removed the body and incinerated in as standard procedure but they have no mandatory requirement to scan the body first. So this poor dogs owner wasn't informed of her dogs demise and spent ages searching for the dog, putting up posters, driving all over and generally making attempts to find her beloved pet. I have to add that the dog hadn't been allowed to just wander, it had escaped and run off. I do feel that the whole family might have been spared many long days of worry and searching if the body had been scanned.

Our local vet did it during her 1st series of shots...she charged us $20.00..I also have taken notes of Panda specifics...spots, ears, teeth, etc...just in case the chip doesnt work...over protective momma  But I think its well worth the peace of mind...Huge needle and Panda didnt even flinch....good girl :D
Our local shelters automatically scan all strays. I don't know how much of an effort they make in reuniting with owners...it will vary with shelter policy and staffing.

All my guys are chipped. I prefer Avid chips, but there are others. But seems as soon as I learn the name of another company, it is bought out and the name changes.

Also was a time various companies' scanners could only read their own chips, but I think that is changing. There's a fee to register the dogs in addition to the chipping fee. You are responsible to keeping the company updated on your moves.

Locally, on road kill the collars and tags are removed and taken to the shelter so the owners can go and search through the pile looking for theirs.
I'm still on the fence regarding microchipping.... it's something I have been thinking about a lot... perhaps instead of or in addition to tatooing... I just don't know yet.
Okay, odd question. Can you get your dogs done with more than one kind of microchip? I believe our local shelter has just gotten another brand of scanner. I can't remember all of the brand names but apparently there were some problems with one brand's scanner not recognizing the other brand's chips.
I haven't been keeping up with all of the technology but are scanners now able to recognize more than more brand of chips? Are there generic scanners that read every brand of chip? Worst comes to worst could you microchip your dog with say, the 2 major brands of microchips to cover all of your bases?

Alright, I'm done. I've made myself tired.
Aside from having a harder time getting through a metal detector, I don't see what harm it would do. ;)
I am getting my dogs chipped at their next vet visit. I think with just the
very slight risk, it is really worth it.

Can I get my sons chipped too?
The dogs listen better- so I figure the sons are more likely to be found
by someone. The dogs come running when I call them...

I have the AVID chip. It is the size of a grain of rice.
Shelters are supposed to have a universal scanner able to detect all chips that are on the market. I just feel it's much safer than just a collar or tags. A dog can easily loose it's collar. You just have more of a chance to get them back this way.
I paid $25 for mine.

One reason people were not getting tatoos is with a long haired dog, by the time they get the shelter, the tatoo is covered over with matted hair. One person told me the reason she wouldn't tatoo is the people might cut her dog's ear off to remove tatoo......I thought that a bit extreme.

The microchip is tiny and injected just below the skin......except when I inject it and then it goes into my thumb! Anyway, you can inject any number of chips, it's not a problem. They might migrate a bit around the shoulder or neck over time, but the techs know to scan a wide area.

One can do all three: chip, tatoo and tags.......probably the best.

Today heard of one dog who ran away from fireworks last night. Was found by a neighbor 3 blocks away and returned before anyone knew he was missing. How? His tag included his home address and phone number. Fortunately he was returned by a very thoughtful person.

sheepieboss who thought she had logged in.......hmmmm
Jasper is microchipped too. He also has two ID tags like this (one came with his microchip and we bought the other one with his collar & leash).

His collar & leash has his name and our cell phone number embroderied (sp?) on it also. Hopefully none of that will ever be needed though!
I had Sam chipped the last time she was at the vets for shots. No sedation needed. My previous dogs were also chipped. You just never know.
Thanks everyone for the input. Thank you so much for the links to the Chicago sources that do it. I'm going to give them a call. Looking at the prices everyone else paid, my vet is charging double!

I'll give http://www.chicagolandtails.com/ooops and
http://www.pawschicago.org/SpayNeuter/sn_main.htm a call and get the scoop!
I guess tattoo's bother me because there is a little more pain involved, but I think if done with a stamp type machine it wouldn't be much more than having an ear peirced, which hurts for a minute or so and that's it. At least with a tattoo, no scanner mix ups are a problem.... I don't know. Microchipping seems a good way to go, but the average person won't have a scanner, nor do a lot of "pounds" so I think hoping that collar and tags stay attached is the best bet if a dog went missing. A tattoo gives visual proof if someone has stolen your dog as well.... which a police officer could verify, but they wouldn't be able to verify a chip.
Hey Everyone,

The PAWS association does have microchipping for $25. Hendrix has his appointment for August 14th at 1:30. Thanks for everyones input!

Dad will have to take him, I can't bear to look at that big needle AND my bachelorette party is the night before!
Don't count on collar and tags. Merlin was lost by the groomer over a year ago. She shaved him after we told her under NO CONDITION should he be shaved  , well after his shaving, his old collar didnt fit him. (she could have adjusted it, or even 'borrowed' another from the pet shop she has her grooming business in  ) however, she took Merlin to potty and he slipped out of his collar. It was the middle of February here in Canada. He was lost for 4 days. We did EVERYTHING to find him. What eventually had him found was the flyers we made and posted in the area where he was lost. This time Microchipping would not have found him. The other thing we did was contact a vet supply place. They sent flyers for us (free of charge) to every vet in Ontario, Canada.
Wow! What a NIGHTMARE! I'm so glad it was a happy ending.
I have an appointment for Beau on Monday to get microchipped at the Vet's office.
Well, yesterday when Hendrix was neutered we had the microchip put in. We also recieved $30 off because he had the "puppy package" from the vet which gave us an added discount.

On the pamphlet that talks about the microchip their is a story about a Pomeranian that was taken from someone and how the microchip was able to ID the dog to the owner. That really sold me on the idea, I'm really glad we decided to add "insurance" for his safety.
i had shelby chipped yesterday, $55 plus $17.50 to register. i have 2 more sheepies to go.
what made the final decision for me was thst our rescue got in a oes mix (not chipped). the owners saw him on our site & are driving hundreds of miles to see if he is actually the dog they lost 2 years ago while camping.
if he had been chipped he may have been found long ago. sue
Wow! I'd love to know the outcome of that!
It's BJ that's on the OESRNSE website now. The people are coming this weekend to see him. Wouldn't it be great if it is there boy? Talk about happy reunion! :D

I agree with Sue. It's a great example of why we should microchip.
Diane,
I am so hoping BJ is their dog! If he isn't i am hoping that they will adopt him. Would be so great!!!! Sue

Let us know what happens. Now I'm dying to know one way or another!

Jill
It was their dog! BJ (AKA Stevie) was the family's lost dog. I don't know the reunion details, but the news was on the OESRNSE website.

How cool is that? :D
Unbelievable! I'm so happy for them! If you have any more details on the reunion, please share!
How wonderful for all of them!
Wow, how awesome!

This isn't the first microchip reunion story for OES either. The last issue of the Old English Times had a story about a dog being returned because of a microchip.

Gotta love happy endings!
The family had lost Stevie two years ago on a camping trip. He didn't have a collar on and the daughter had let him out to go potty one last time for the night. Some person nearby starting shooting, not sure if it was guns or fireworks, and Stevie got spooked and ran. The family looked for him, put up posters, everything they knew to do. But, he was gone. This was in Kansas.

Not sure how he ended up in Nashville, TN. The area where he was lost was near an interstate, so I guess it's possible someone picked him up and took him home. Anyway, he ended up in a shelter in Nashville. Ingrid sprung him and was fostering him. He was put on the OESRNSE website and Petfinder.

The lady who lost him saw him on there and got in touch with Ingrid. She was so excited she was in tears! She described him perfectly, they exchanged pictures and then last weekend, the family drove 8 hours to see him. As soon as they got out of the car he went running to them! They're so happy to have him back! Just smothering him with kisses and attention.

Isn't that a great story?? I'll bet he was thinking, "It's about time you guys found me!"

I just LOVE happy endings!!
That's fantastic!! It is wonderful that the family was still looking and so lucky that he was rescued from the shelter. Amazing story.
That's amazing! Don't you wish he could tell the story of where he's been the last 2 years?
It must not have been a good two years since his second owners turned him in... poor guy.
Glad he is back with his owners. I wish I had gotten my Toy Poodle, Scooter back when he got out, but I am sure someone took him in.
I had flyers everywhere that kept getting ripped down

That's awful! I'm sure someone took him in. My cat Miles was missing for almost a week and it turned out that my neighbor behind me had taken him while he was out back (something he is no longer allowed to do). I only got him back when I happened to post a notice right in front of her building when there were people milling about and they were all like "hey isn't that the cat that___ just brought home?" I was horrified that she actually demanded the reward to return him. But I paid it just in case he got out accidentally again. So all my fears of Miles roaming free, prowling the streets, eating vermin were totally unfounded. When she returned him, he had been bathed, powdered, ear ointmented, nails clipped and in a crate. I felt so bad for him!
A bitter sweet ending, I'm suprised he remembered him, but then again the people that took care of him the best probably stayed with him.

What age did they lose him?
