We got a new male Sheepie.

He was supposed to be on a trial basis, but Elvis who was very growly when he met him last week scared off the owners. I explained he doesn't bark and is very vocal. But I was worried and so were the owners. I thought about it for over a week and told the owners I would like to try to make it work. Well after a couple of hours of Elvis being growly he decided he liked him.....a lot!! I am positive it will work out great.
So we picked up Polo today, his name will be changed though.
I was actually really rude to the owners because he is so matted. Despite my reaming then out about the condition of his coat they called today after finding out the other people that wanted him only wanted a guard dog. He is no guard dog, he would probably lick an intruder to death.
When we arrived home and started to shave him down I realized he was in much worse condition than I thought he was. I thought it Just his collar are but it is his entire head. His ears were and are still matted to the side of his head. I tried to use the clippers but he started nipping, so Billy helped while I tried to remove the matts with scissors. Billy was in tears over his condition. We managed to free most of his one ear, but the other is still being pulled to his skin pretty bad. I worked a little move and manages to free it up a little and I am sure he is feeling much better. Despite all of him matting he is a sweetheart. I am sure he will be even more lovable once he is matt free.
Rags and Lacey met him for the first time tonight. They both adored him at first sight. I thought this was meant to be because I rescued Pepsi at 10 mos old too. So far so good! Hopefully I can get his head matt free by tomorrow. I suck at scissoring. Especially when you can't see where his skin is.
He also has an ear infection. They had an e-collar on him and claim that is why he is so matted. The collar was supposedly to keep him from chewing hot spots on his back. I actually think he was chewing his matts off. After shaving his body I did not see any hotspots. Poor guy has been kept outside his the entire 8 months they have had him.

On the way home!

Hayley took this one. He has two beautiful blue eyes!

One part of the giant matt that was holding his ears to his head.
These matts are bigger than his actual ears! :(

And this is his body after the shave down, he looks like a Dalmatian. lol

I will post more pics once we are able to get his head free of matts.
I worked on them for over 2 hours. And groomed a total of 4+ hours today.
He is a beautiful boy and I'm happy you rescued him. He is very lucky.
Oh, isn't he the lucky pup??? So happy that you found each other. Gorgeous :hearts:

How sad that the previous owners neglected him the first eight months of his life. He so deserves this new chance.

Have you chosen a new name to go with his new life??
:D Thanks!
We have not chosen a name but we have a few in mind.
I forgot to post one of the pics of part of the matt that was holding his ears to his head.

This is almost as large as an actual ear and much thicker!
8O WOW that mat!!!!!!!!!!! 8O

What a lucky dog he is!!!!!!!
I hope the rest of the groom goes well. Poor guy, those mats hurt!! :(
I'd go ahead and shave the head as well. I know people cringe, but I also shave the ears, a full summer camp cut. My guys loved having hairless ears........they would flap their ears.......they are free and so light weight. When the hair starts coming back they are like fuzzy puppies, adorable. Plus without hair, they can pull the ears up higher for hearing and air circulation. With an ear infection by all means shave the bottom of the ear...against the head, think "drainage." As soon as I did that with Kensie her ear infection on left side got much better and soon gone.

He's a Holstein!! Baby cow! Jack was a cow, er, steer. He'll be great!
Susan,
We tried to shave the head too, but it is hurting him so bad from his matts he got very nippy and agitated, so we've been slowly scissoring it. After we realized how bad the matting on his head was, we also realized there was no possible way to shave it. In most places you can't see his skin. He is such a mess. It's going to be a slow process.
Congratulations on your new blue eyed sheepie..

....you DO know Nationals are coming SOON???? What a way to introduce him to all his 'people'......(He is a real cutie.....!!! You are BOTH lucky!!) :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
oooh, serious matting to the skin. Only the very shortest blade, like a 40 or high gets under those. Keep working them, try a dab of moisturizer worked into them and then cut what you can, may have to remove over next few weeks. You can always put a soft muzzle over them, the soft sleeve. Worst case is have them sedated and done.

You have lots to overcome, such pups are very sensitive around feet, ears and muzzle. In time he'll be fine. Pogo is a cute name but too close to Pepsi. Guess there's no chance of naming after Elsie the Cow's "husband".........Elmer
We used a #10 skip tooth blade on our thick mats. Seemed to work well for us.
He is lucky you have him now. He is beautiful. Give him a hug!
He's going to love being with you after saving him from the matted hell! Lookinf forward to seeing more pictures.
Yeah, a #10 was all I ever needed, had (have??) a #15 but honestly don't think I've used it for anything more than wound clearing. When they cleared off a spot (?) 6" x 8" clearing on her back for the injections, they used a #40. Only now, nearly a month, can I feel fuzz.
Congrats! He is a pretty boy! So glad he now has you to love and take care of him!
I am happy he found you! :clappurple:
It sounds like it was meant to be! I can't imagine leaving a 2 month old sheepie outside all the time (I can't imagine leaving a full grown Sheepie outside either) but it will likely make him appreciate his new life all the more. The matting looks painful but when he is all cleaned up he will feel so great! I find their hair grows back so fast that before you know it he will be a big sheepie fluff ball! He looks like a very nice guy :)

Congratulations and great job on the difficult haircut- even without the matting clipping a sheepie is time consuming and tough on the back!
What a lucky boy to finally have a home that actually cares about him.
Thanks all! We are so thrilled to welcome another Sheepie boy. I have missed having one around.

Well I had an old friend help me! I contacted Mary C. (You know who I mean, Susan.) I let her know I was in trouble with the grooming. I needed an extra pair of hands or 3! LOL! As soon as she heard she rushed over here Monday morning and helped me do his head. She used some special grooming stuff for horses and it was amazing. We did still have to do a lot of scissoring to get his ears detached from his throat. Mary said I was wrong when I said the matting was like an extra ear on each side, she said it was more like 3 extra ears each side. And he had scratched and tore some skin on his ear. :(
But he will be fine!!
We got balls of hair out of his ears the size of golfballs. He was so patient.
Mary showed me a technique to get him used to the clippers. I practiced it today and he did well.

As for his name we have settled on Newman, as in Paul Newman.
I really didn't want anything with a P. Billy kept saying Pepsi and I kept getting upset.
However, he is a small Sheepie like Pepsi was. :D
So here is his first glamour shot after being dematted.

Here he is mauling Hayley with kisses.

And here is where I found him today. On my bed playing with Elvis.
Rags followed me into the bedroom and insisted on giving Newman a kiss and joining in the fun.
They were all promptly kicked off the bed. No wresting on the bed! LOL!
Welcome Newman :hearts:

He is SOOO happy, thank you for adopting him :yay:
That is just fantastic! Great job on his groom and everybody looks so happy! Congratulations!
Lots of good stuff!!

:D :D
Those pictures just melt me !

(sorry, couldn't resist  )
He looks beautiful and happy! Congratulations.

:clappurple:
Thanks guys!
Mark too funny, I posted a sign that said, "Hello Newman!" on my Facebook as his intro there. lol
The funny thing is our Cattle Dog Mix says, Hello.... okay it's more like Harrow.
Now if we could teach him to say Newman! lol
Yeah, I doubt that one.
Newman looks great! Love the name!

I finally got a good pic, though the colors are off a bit.
Great eyes.
Welcome Newman! What a lucky boy he is now! :hearts:

Cindy
What a handsome boy. We originally called Frankie " Newman" but it just didn't flow right for us. When Troy would call him, he would say it the Seinfeld way.
Welcome to your new life Newman.

With that name, you're obligated to say it like that. :D

Ha ha ha!
Lisa, it keeps coming out the Seinfeld way here, but we laugh.
Mark, I really think you are! My best friend called today and she is a HUGE Seinfeld fan too.
She said, "I know he's named for Paul Newman.... but HELLO NEWMAN!"
I laughed and admitted I have been doing it too. lol
He is a pup and has been getting into all sorts of things, so that Jerry tone of saying, "Newman!", just works. LOL!
I just caught up with this thread today. I am so happy for all of you, but especially for Newman. What a wonderful change in his life! :cheer: :cheer:
I am so very happy for all of you, Elissa! He looks beautiful and he will only get better!
You saved him!  He looks great with the shave down and bet when that grows in he will be even more beautiful. So happy you took him and now he will be loved in a home after all that time outside.

Bless you and lots of love to new boy! :hearts: :hearts:
