It finally happened....

One of my greatest fears with my full coated OES finally happened. Teddy got skunked last week. I always do the skunk patrol before I let him out at night and it must have been in the neighbors yard behind my shed where I couldn't really see it. This happened last thursday night at about 10:30pm. He just had his full bath that morning. I hosed him down and did the skunk remedy I had heard does the best. One quart hydrogen peroxide, 1\4 cup baking soda and 1 teaspoon liquid soap (Dawn being the best). I really needed several batches of this for Teddy's coat but I only had the one bottle of peroxide so I concentrated mostly on his face, head and front where he took most of the hit.

He had this mortified look on his face after it happened. I called him a dumb ass more than once during the de-skunking. Bad enough it happened, but I was getting ready to go to bed as I started day shift the next morning and had to get up at 4:30am for work. On top of that, we are showing this coming weekend so one week before the dog show he decides to get himself skunked! Neither of us were happy. So there I am, out on my patio at 11pm at night giving him a bath with the garden hose and this mixture and then blow drying him until after midnight. The neighbors probably think I've really lost it...lol

He still had the aroma of skunk because I didn't have enough solution to really do him well but while I was drying him I was also spraying him with the crown royal #3 grooming spray. I made him sleep in the crate as I didn't want him laying on the carpet or anything else in the house. Fortunately, we had an extra guy at work that could work the board for me while I ran Teddy back to the groomers. I called her from work and said we have a grooming emergency! She was able to take him in again and give him another good soaking with that solution. She didn't have the baking soda so I gave her mine. It worked really well on his entire coat except his beard and the top of his head still smells some since that's where he took most of the hit and have to be careful not to get that in his eyes. You really have to put your nose right on his hair to smell it though so it's not bad. Hopefully the judges this weekend don't notice it too much. So in the span of 24 hours, he had 3 baths. I'll say one thing, he was squeaky clean and his whites have never been whiter!

He'll get another bath this morning for his whites for the show this weekend. We are showing at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles, IL for anyone in the area that might like to stop by and say hi and see us in the ring. We are in Ring 1 at about 11:30am both days, saturday and sunday.

Hopefully Teddy will give skunks a wide berth in the future.

Maybe you can put a little baby powder in that area to mask the smell. We did that once when Harry rolled on a worm right before we were leaving for a therapy visit. I couldn't groom out all the smell so we used the powder to cover it up.
Oh Teddy, Teddy, Teddy, what you'll put your Mom through. I'm happy to hear you've had success in deskunking him. Good luck this weekend!
No Teddy doesn't have enough sense to stay away from them. The little stinker was in the yard next to us the very next night and Teddy wanted to go get him. Either he didn't know it was a skunk or he thought he could get him back. Either way he is still a dumb ass....lol

Thanks for luck for the show. We'll need it! :plead:

This is a big fear we have too, especially because it seems like there has been a whole herd of skunks who have moved into the neighbourhood. The girls smell them at night (hey, we do too!) and Mady and Gracie go into a barking frenzy. We do a check before letting them out in the backyard for their final pee. Still haven't actually seen the skunk(s), but the smell is very strong in the neighbourhood. :(

A smaller disaster happened with Virginia last night, somehow, she stepped into a huge mass of tree sap, it was like she pressed her whole paw into a bucket of sap, I just cut out whatever I could cut out, I didn't care about her hair around the paw, and Kim spent an hour trying to pick it out with olive oil (which we found recommended searching the forums last night!) It was awful and the pine smell was really strong. I am just very thankful it wasn't Gracie! 8O
They used to recommend tomato juice for getting skunk smell out. One of our bassets got skunked and it worked on him.
It is indeed a fear I still have after our late night when four dogs got hit. I did have enough makin's that everyone got a good bath but poor DH, also an early riser, got only a few hours sleep that night. For some reason Fox remained stinky for a month afterward, no amount of washing could get it all out.

Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and soap are far better than tomato juice.......it's a chemical break down of the skunk chemical. Problem is it is also drying to the coat, so have moisturizers on hand as well.

I hope Teddy is fine for the judges. Don't get him wet.......any remaining stink will come back........so hope it is not raining and he gets "misty."

NO, they don't learn............

Early spring and late fall are our main times.........I love cold weather because the buggers hibernate.
Poor, Teddy!! Poor, you!!! :?

Good luck with the show!! :cheer: :cheer:

We are out of town this weekend, otherwise we would come watch.

I'd be concerned that the tomato juice might stain the whites a pink color- anyone have any luck with this?

Cindy I'm SO sorry- that's just the worst. But i have to ask; does the peroxide/baking soda combo get them extra white? I wonder what it might do on my girl's beards.... :lmt:
We used tomato juice the first time our female found a skunk. All it did was make her look like a horrible accident victim. It washed out well but left all the skunk aroma. She got that hit from about 6" so had a good soaking of skunk spray.
   I'm sorry, I know it isn't funny.

Good luck this weekend at the show!! Baby powder is a wonderful cover for all things "fragrant" Hope it works for Teddy :crossed:
That used to be a semi-regular occurrence when I was growing up - having Brittanys and doing hunting and field training with them several times a week just ups your chances so much more!
Thank goodness they are at least easier to wash and dry :D :D

And then there's our cat Tipup, who has been sprayed 3 times. He goes on yard patrol like he's a dog....
The last time it was by the barn, so he likely saved hens and eggs though :clappurple:

And last night I thought of Teddy...
It was getting toward sunset when I got home from work...as I'm slowing for our driveway, I see a skunk come out of our windbreak (the dog yard is right on the other side of the windbreak), go through the mowed ditch, cross the road, and disappear into the opposite ditch!
I was super cautious letting the dogs out, let me tell you...and for me too, as I was out picking up dog poop before it got dark.

I hope he is handsome and odor-free for your judges this weekend...good luck!
What a mess! We've been lucky so far, though the first thing I did when we moved to the country was buy skunk shampoo.

One of our neighbors has had his dog skunked twice, and he swears by . . . douche. Seriously, his dog got skunked late on a Saturday, and he used 3 bottles of Summer's Eve since he couldn't get to the groomer. Said it worked like a charm.

Good luck at the show. (A little baby powder sounds like a good idea.)
I've just been reading up on skunk spray and cleaning it up.......may I never have to do that again!! Very interesting especially when you get back into the chemistry of skunk musk and how it differs with species.........like I'm ever going to try to tell the difference. There are several basic type chemicals involved including thiols and that's where the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and detergent come in. Realize the hydrogen peroxide must be fresh, it looses it's ability to work after a few months. Failure with the recipe is usually due to dead hydrogen peroxide.

Tomato juice and douche solutions are said to "work" because of olfactory tiredness, our noses quit smelling the stink and smell the tomato juice or douche. And yeah they also mention the odor may return if the dog gets wet....even months later. So cleaning completely is mandatory. Moisturize after the because the hydrogen peroxide is very drying to the coat.

To clean up the house and clothes, use bleach.......dilute solution in a spray bottle.

Sure hope Teddy is free of the stink and spritzing at grooming didn't release it again.

Skunks and porcupines.....pups never learn, maybe it is revenge but they always come out losers.
