Luna's Best Friend Riki on Heroes of Cosplay

SyFy has a new show that aired last night after the season premier of Face-Off called Heroes of Cosplay. It's a "reality" show, and knowing many of the people on it, I can see how staged and edited this "reality" is. Still, it was fun to see our friends on TV. Riki, who came with us to our first (though it was actually the second) Sheepie Palooza is in the credit sequence, and I think is featured in next week's episode.

Here's a 5 year old photo of Riki keeping Luna from diving into the paddle boat pond at Sheepie Palooza in St. Louis:

and that same day, hugging on Tonks:

And here she is in one of her costumes:

Seriously she really does!!!

So, what is the premise of this show? Hard to imagine a reality show that is sci-fi? unless she is a medium or something? Lives in a haunted house?
the premise is the show follows essentially 2 teams of cosplayers (men and women that create costumes and wear them at comic book and anime conventions). One team is out of Los Angeles, and the other the Atlanta area (one reason we know a few of them). The camera follows the creatives as they decide what they will be wearing, as they go through the process of making the costumes, and then to a convention where they wear and sometimes compete in costume contests in them.

I was working Adam's table at a comic book convention in Orlando last March when the film crew came by and filmed me talking with Riki. Maybe I'll be on the program. I know they wanted Adam to sign his film rights to them so they could come and shoot Riki at our place, and he didn't want to. Neither of us was thrilled with the idea of our lives being put on tv after being edited to make it fit in with whatever the show wanted. But I'm sorry Tonks and Luna didn't get the chance to be on tv.
I watched a bit last night and really liked it. I really like costume design and makeup. I couldn't make it through the episode though. It was way past my bed time. I really wanted to see the costume of lulu from ff x.
Thanks - I knew I had heard the term cosplay - I just couldn't place it.
That should be interesting.
So, what are some of the "fake" things you see? And I'm the same way when I watch medical shows....it drives me nuts with all the wrong stuff - can't watch them I get too frustrated.
Fake probably isn't the right term; maybe just staged? For example, there was one gentleman on the show; he was making what might have looked like a fairly intricate suit of space armor (I think that's what it was). But what I saw was Storm Trooper armor (from Star Wars, and something easily purchased) and a set of football shoulder pads, all spray painted a gray color. Maybe he took those pieces and modified them, but he claimed the armor took him 6 months to make. Which there's no way that's the case. In the show's defense, the guy went into competition with this get-up, and didn't win. And to the average viewer, they may never have recognized the Storm Trooper armor pieces. I have a life-sized set of Storm Trooper armor (though I have never worn it) so I recognized the pieces instantly. (yeah, I'm that nerdy). But football pads? LOTS of people are going to recognize that! And while I don't think it's any kind of crime to utilize stuff you have to make something new, don't paint a picture that you spent 6 months fabricating all of these pieces that you obviously scavenged.

There's another point in the show when a bunch of the cosplayers that are planning on competing find out that another cast member is going to be a judge, and they all act surprised. These girls all know each other, and have known for ages that they were all on the show. Maybe they didn't know that the one girl wasn't being lumped in with the rest of them, and wasn't going to compete, but rather judge. But to me it was edited to appear like the girls didn't realize that the woman who would judge them was involved at all.

Still; I think I'm going to be the 5% of people that would watch the show and see these things. I think to the casual viewer, it was probably very good entertainment. And with the exception of Space Armor guy; all of the other costumes are just wonderful to see, and to watch being created!
What day/time is it aired?
I'll have to at least check it out!
