Garage door busted

Double garage door. 15 years old. Tonight it opened and closed when I came home, but I was on my way out after dinner and it wouldn't open more than 6 inches. Tried it repeatedly and still no go. Called my friend who just had her door fixed and the guy is coming tomorrow morning. In the meantime, the large spring along the top of the door is in 2 pieces. I'm guessing that's why it won't open...

Bets as to how much this will cost??? I'm saying $400.

Same thing happened to my door a few years ago but I don't remember how much the spring was. I don't think it was that much though.

Should be that much. I've replaced ours twice. If I can do it, a trained tech will find it a breeze.
Ugh - hope it gets repaired quickly and inexpensively!
I think that is what happened to me a few years ago. I think the cost was about $200?

Fingers crossed that it is fixed as I type!! :crossed:
Quickly, but not inexpensive. I knew the motor and other parts were wearing out. As of tomorrow, everything will be new except the door itself! Today's cost was $379, which included the $95 service call (but all service calls going forward will be free), 2 new springs, and 8 new wheels. Tomorrow the motor and its peripherals will be replaced for $395. Apparently opening and closing the door while the spring was on its last legs ground the motor down.

My initial guesstimate of $400 was spot on for today....
Good to get all those parts done before winter. Any service call these days will be $100 basic.

Couple of years ago we went automatic and decided to get new doors too. Why didn't we do that earlier? Because we were young and strong.
We weren't so lucky with ours. We ended up having to get a new door and we went with an insulated one so that we got an energy tax rebate. That was a couple of years ago. Now we are having problems with the control by the back door. Sometimes it will open the garage door and sometimes it won't. They said we need to get an electrician to repair it. It is always something.
Glad you didn't get hurt! My spring snapped off right at the end
a couple weeks ago. It happened just a split second before I would
have been right in the line of fire. Talk about seeing your life flash
before your eyes. Scared the livin' bejeeezus out of me! I said more
than one prayer of thanks that night.

You don't realize the amount of tension those springs can hold till they
let go, trust me.

The motor is so freakin quiet and I don't even need to take the remote out of the console for it to work. I guess I was used to noisy, and the remote not working most of the time without being on top of the door. I dislike spending money on mundane stuff like this, but it is worth it when I see how nicely it works.
Good news!!! :D
