I got a surprise this morning!

Our cat surprised us. We had no idea she had been in heat, was pregnant or anything! This morning, I'm folding clothes and Brandon brought me something black & furry. My first thought was mouse, lol I screamed and told him to drop it. Poor thing was a baby kitten!!! I realized what it was and felt bad. Apparently Allie had 4 baby kittens either last night or this morning. One died, so now we have three. They're pretty cute. :) Two of them have homes already.

She had them in the boy's bedroom floor, so I guess I know what I'll be doing today - steamcleaning their room! lol I just cleaned it a few weeks ago too. I'm worried about Jasper. He hasn't seen them yet, and I don't know how he's going to act around them...kinda scary thinking about it! I think we're going to use Jasper's wire kennel for Allie & her kittens since Jasper's varikennel came in the other day.

How long until I can spay her??? She's nearly 2 years old, never goes outside (so I don't know how this happened!), and as far as I know, that was her first time in heat.

I have a couple of pics but they're awaiting approval. :)

Allie will keep the dogs in check...it's amazing how much instinct takes over...she will be in full protection mode. Feed her kitten food now, give her lots of extra calories.

Congratulation :? I guess, glad you already have homes. Was the one dropped the one to die?? They are so cute, I'd take the grey patches one...but we are kinda partial to grey and white cats.
By the look of her, she may not be quite done yet....

No...I guess one died during birth. It was really small, so it probably wouldn't have survived anyway. It was patterned just like Allie. I don't think the kitten that fell is hurt - he's moving around & is always eating! lol This is going to be fun. I haven't had tiny kittens in a LOOONG time!

I dunno...she's a chubby girl anyway. :)
My cat did that to me too, but I was in a stressful time, living with a roommate from hell, and not paying attention to her she had her litter in her first year ... but she was a small cat and I knew right away she had gotten pregnant. So I was able to prepare, she was the most affectionate cat after the litter was born., and then I had to place them.
Try and find a box for her, so she has a place that she feels more secure and safe in. Cover it with a blanket on all sides, so she has the feeling of security. The kittens can't control their body temperature for quite a few weeks, so they also shouldn't be near any drafty areas. You may wrap a heating pad, or heat bottle in blankets and keep it in her nest, so if she gets out to eat, or use the litter pan, the babies keep the temp up. You need to put her food, water, and litter box in a very close area to her kittens, she won't want to leave them for very long. She needs to be put on kitten forumla food right away, and if she seems to be losing weight then feed her some canned forumla Hills prescription A/D to help put on some extra weight. You should find a gram scale to weigh the kittens everyday for a couple of weeks. Approx. at 10 gram weight gain per day is about average, maybe a little less or more on some days. If they aren't gaining or losing, you will need to get KMR kitten milk replacement forumla to help feed them.
If you have any questions at all, let me know, I can help you out with a lot of it. Email me at familytimerags@cox.net

Here is also a link to let you know what to expect over the next 12 weeks of kittens growing. http://www.purrinlot.com/kittenbirthcalendar.htm
Good luck with them, and try and keep kids, dogs, anyone away for now, so she can rest and focus on the babies.

They are very cute, wow, what a surprise!! Do you plan on keeping one of them?

Sharon
That would be one heck of a surprise!
Kittens are so cute. When I was 7 we adopted a neighborhood stray.
She had three kittens. It was so much fun for my sister & I taking care of them.
Also puppies are a lot of fun...but a lot messier than kitties and a lot more work. Enjoy them!

Well, I guess Allie is a terrible mother. She's not wanting to take care of the babies at all. :( Only the black kitten is left, and I've been feeding it every 2 hours with a milk replacement (SLEEPY!!!) I told Jason if this little one makes it, I'm going to get attached so we might have to keep it! I just hate she isn't being better with them...
Gail,
I am very sorry to hear what happened.
I guess just like some humans decide they never want to be parents, that animals are the same way. Unfortunately they can't say "Listen, I don't want to be a Mom". I guess spaying her would be the way to go.
When my Boxer Roxie had her puppies she ignore one and I took care of her. So I feel for you. I brought her everywhere with me, even to work.
Unfortunately ever after all I did she didn't make it. Roxie was a great mother so I guess she just must have known their was something wrong with the puppy. I hope you have better luck than I did. I am sure you will. It doesn't sound like there is a problem with the kitten...just Allie wants no part of it.
Good Luck!
Elissa
I recommend you go to www.thecatsite.com and contact a member named Hissy. She is the orphaned kitten expert. I've hand raised many myself, and would suggest you get the kitten glop recipe from Hissy, as well as keep corn syrup handy is the kitten seems too weak to eat. Put a dab of it on the roof of the kittens mouth and encourage it to drink pedialyte first, kitten glop or kitten milk replacer after. It needs energy and water to survive, and to be strong enough to even absorb the nutrients in the milk replacer. It sounds like fading kitten syndrome to me. Good luck! I wish I was closer so I could help.... :(
At the catsite hissy may be able to help ou find someone close to you who is rasing a litter of kittens so that a foster mother might be able to take over too.
Don't forget to gently rub the kitten's bottom and belly with a warm wet cotton ball to stimulate it to pee and poop. That stuff HAS to come out.
Good luck with your bottle fed baby... Boy, I don't envy you at all... sounds like a lot of work! Hope everything comes out great in the end!

Karen :)
Thanks girls. Yeah, hypoglycemia (hope I spelled that right) is something I'm afraid of. I have corn syrup in the house anyway. Thanks for the website. I'm heading there in a few mins. The kitten seems to be doing well. He's still squirming about, and he was mewing this morning when I went in there to check on him. He's the one that got dropped, so it's a tough little cookie.

I'm really disappointed in Allie. We weren't planning a litter of kittens, but I definitely don't want her to have any more now. We're taking her to get her spayed as soon as we can. I need to call our vet and find out how long we need to wait. It was something we had planned on doing anyway, but something else came up that always seemed more important (like just this weekend, the relay switch on the compressor on our 3 year old fridge went out and ruined everything in there - something is always going on!) This is top priority now though...I don't want her abandoning any more kittens and letting them die. :(

Oh that is very sad! Poor kitties. Good luck!
Not an expert on cats or kittens, BUT I do know from talking to other people, and observing their female cats, that they can get pregnant again, AS SOON AS they deliver a litter of kittens! They're not like dogs - no six month waiting period for the next heat............

Good luck with your new kitty.
So you are down to one now? I've been busy and just checking in, that's to bad about Allie not taking care of her babies. Wow what a story to share if this little guy makes it...are you gonna keep him? I am sure after playing mom to him for this time you will so attached...have you named him?

We probably will. The kitten is doing great this morning too. I almost want to let my reserve down, but I know it's still way too early. I can definitely tell he's getting a lot stronger though by his movements...he's starting to crawl (walk?) now. I'll put him on one side of the crate, and he'll be on the other side next time I check on him. He's also lifting his head a lot higher when I go in to give him his bottle. It's so tiring, but I keep telling myself just a few more weeks & he'll be on kitten food - lol This isn't the first time I've raised a litter of animals by myself, but it is the first time with toddlers. My boys are up at 7 am, go to bed at 10 pm, with no naps, so I'm usually dead tired by around 7 pm or so....lol
Does he have a name? So good he's doing better, and he really is a trooper to be against all odds, and come out the strongest. It really is like another baby with reg 2 hour feedings....but no diaper changes

Has Allie paid any attention to him at all in a positive way...or are you scared she will kill him?
