Found a dog in my yard. Hoping I'm doing the right thing

Found a stray little dog in my yard about an hour ago. He has a blue collar on but no tags.
I was able to coax him to me with a treat. I gave him that & noticed he was licking the water off the plants. So I brought him a tub of water. He drank quite a bit of that. Then I gave him a little food, and now he's my best friend.
I called animal control so they could come get him but they don't work at night. I called the police but they can't do anything unless the dog is vicious.
I didn't want to bring him in the house because I don't know what his situation is with his health. He seems to be outwardly healthy but you never know.

I didn't want him to just let him go. I'm afraid he might get hurt or worse. I'd love to transport him to the animal hospital but I don't really want to touch him nor do I have a crate to put him in.
So I put him on Brick's cable and left him out there with a full tub of water.
I'll call animal control in the morning so they can come get him.

Am I doing the right thing? Should I be doing something different?
Words of advice would be appreciated.

I think you've done just the right thing. The weather looks good for tonight, so he should be fine on Bricky's tie-out.
What stinks is now I'll have to spray the yard because I don't know if this little guy has anything that Brick could catch, like fleas, ticks, and mites.
And then I won't be able to put Brick back there until a few good rains come thru to wash it all away.

He was using his back paws to try and scratch his sides and was pushing/dragging himself thru the grass.
Well, I went to check on the pup before I went to bed and all I found was an empty cable. No collar.
Made me wonder if he was able to shake it off like Brick can, but it's a big, heavy cable and clasp and he is just a little guy.
Then my neighbor just called and said they saw someone walking back thru our arbor vitaes.

My guess is they came and got their dog.

But don't you think it was a little inconsiderate for them to not stop and say thank you for looking after their dog?
The flood light was on and the back door was open. All they needed to do was just knock and say thank you.
I don't get people.
Interesting...I hope things go better for the little guy.
I agree that's strange. Hope he is OK.
I wonder how often he gets out.
While he was on the cable, he mostly stayed to the south east corner of the yard, kept looking in that direction, would occasionally bark in that direction, and tried to head in that direction (of course the cable wouldn't let him).

Now that I fed & watered him, do you think he will head right back here if he gets loose again?
He proberly thinks of you as a good place for a snack now but at least you gave him water etc and stopped him from getting run over or getting dehydrated to badly.x
Mark - I get some spray at the local plant nursery that requires hour(s) to dry depending on humidity, once it is dry it is safe to be on (and even eat, in the case of gardens). I am not sure of the exact name, but it is a Seven product for garden insects and works on fleas and ticks, mosquitoes, and those little black biting flies (for 2 months +/-). That way Brick can be outside in the nice weather coming . . . and though it was rude, thoughtless of the owner not say thank you, you have the satisfaction of knowing the pup was safe at least for a while . . . with so many at risk animals, you acted to make a life better . . . so thank you . . . one scared little ones life was improved because of you. (with our society today, hopefully the at fault owner isn't going to file suit for stealing his lost and wandering dog  )

I have some Bio Spot I got from Pet Smart 2 years ago. The active ingredient is premarithin. It says to stay off the lawn until dry.
I'll let it go a few dry/rain cycles before I let him go in the back yard. No biggie.

And I did think about the owner accusing me of stealing their dog. So glad the cops came to the house last night to see the dog (and tell me there was nothing they can do  ). They know I wanted to get the dog back to the rightful owner and wanted to keep him safe.
Here's a couple pics of the little guy.

He is cute. Hope he is okay with his owners. And hope he comes back to you if he gets out again. Just don't understand people.
