Water

I don't think my dogs drink enough water - especially in this heat. They seem to wait and then drink it all in one gulp. How much water does your dog drink and how do you get them to drink more often????

You sure they aren't sneaking water at night? That's when Harry takes his giant gulps. I wouldn't worry about their water consumption if they remain healthy. If they were ill.....yeah!

Might try dressing the water a bit. I'd use a splash of milk..........."White Water" was always popular. Try a little chicken broth in water. Now I don't worry about, just keep clean bowls, fresh water and they can decide.
Our vet suggests adding salty green beans into the unsalted ones. The salt makes them drink a bit more. And their blood pressure/kidney function is good, so it is safe for our dogs.
The easiest gauge is to monitor the urine. While it's not really measurable, it should be a light amber to almost clear color for most dogs. Maybe just because I'm an RN...but I look at the urine character of my animals all the time! :)

Now if you have one dog, you can easily monitor the intake...but in my house, it's impossible to see what any one dog drinks...even our cat drinks from the same dishes/water fountain. :D
Ha, I do check their urine! My family thinks I am a nut but having lived with a very ill Mom for many years, I learned all about dehydration and the color of urine.

The dogs seem fine and they have several water bowls throughout the house - which is central a/c - and we change the water frequently so its always cool and fresh. I just worry in this heat about them...Not that they are out except to do their business!
I am a proud "pee checker" as well! :D Oscar drinks slightly more water during high temps, but not a ton more, as he spends 99% of his time in air conditioning.

Diane, aren't you the one who keeps the indoor air temp at 68 degrees in the summer? If so, Oscar and I are coming to your house!!!!! :D

Stay cool, everyone!

I will add ice cubes to their water bowls sometimes. They like to 'bob' for them. Ice cubes make great toys too. They slide around, they can throw them in the air and lets not forget stalking as well. Just be careful on wood or tile floors.
