Heartworm Positive

I wasn't surprised to discover Kensey is HW positive. Anyone who would dump a dog at an interstate reststop would not care enough to keep the dog HW free. So Thursday she goes for x-rays to determine condition of heart, veins, etc which in turn will determine what type of treatment she gets. That will be Monday. The meds are painful injections. Poor baby. Plus the vet will put her on Doxi as other biological are often associated with HW, I think she said the dreaded Erlichiosis. Poor Kensey.

Can't they do the longer, but less painful, treatment of just giving her heartworm meds?
Isn't that what they did for Mr. Muffin?
Once they look inside they may be able to do that.
Well let's hope she can get the more comfortable treatment.
Oh the poor baby! Thank heavens she has someone looking out for her now.
Sending thoughts and prayers. Thank God she found you!
Poor Kensey! Hugs! :ghug: Hope there is good news regarding the treatment.
Ugh, that is a pain.
Our Riley came up positive 2 summers ago - the shots were painful for a day or so, but then it seemed to go away and be a non-issue for him. He has really bounced back and has more energy than before the treatment.

I have 2 friends going through it with dogs now - one is a hound friend in Arkansas, she has a little dachshund Penny who came up positive this spring. The other is my friend Mary who found a little dog (looks to be Maltese/poodle mix) on the streets in TX when she was on vacation this spring, who was a stray. She brought her home to MN with her. Both are in the 2nd stage - had the second shots a few weeks ago. Both are doing great!

All three did the doxy - well Anita's little Penny started it, but she reacted, so they had to stop it for her.
Hope she can have the best and less painful treatment but the main thing is that she is treated and cured.
So sorry to read this about poor Kensey. Just when things were going so well for her too :(

At least she has a loving home and caring owner to see her through :hearts:
We have to do the gene test before we can give her Heartgaard.......weeks in the future. Just our luck she comes up with the gene. There is some great news re: this but I can't spill the beans yet..........
We did IV arsenic for our Golden twenty years ago. We got him from a friend of my s-I-l.
Reuben was the only they ever had that gained weight on the treatment.

Fingers-crossed on the ivermectin.

We had a rescue basset who came to us HW positive way back when...about 25+ yrs ago. My boss was a vet. He did the treatment (arsenic then too) for free - it was a much nastier treatment. The current drugs with the divided treatments are SO VERY much better!! :D
Yep, Crumpet got the arsenic treatment. Had to stay overnight. This is two injections 30 days apart. Then after retesting goes on Ivermectin I assume. Have ordered the DNA kit to check for the "Collie gene" to see if she can take Ivermectin. Not sure the vet is aware of it. 30 forced quiet, not going to be hard for this housedog as long as UPS or Fed Ex doesn't come to gate.
TAPE WORMS!!

Saw the suckers stuck to her butt while waiting at the vet's office. Took a fecal sample to see if any other parasites are living in there as well    After the finger invasion to get a sample I took her out as the tech said, "She needs to go". Sure enough, just loaded. Guess I mistook worms for green beans in the evening light.

Vet wanted us to use ivermectin for the tape worms but reminded her OES are collie dogs. Vet understood immediately as she has a BC. I have already ordered a test kit from Washington state for the DNA test but the vet said she could do it at their cost, $120 cheaper!! So instead something else to give to her today 6 pills all at once, harder on their tummy, but...... Asked about using diatomaceous earth, DE, but vet said takes longer and we need to get her over the tape worms before we start on the heart worms..........the wormy beast.

Also need to go to drug store to get an antibiotic to kill Wolbachia, a bacteria that lives and protects heartworms. Normally they use Doxy, but at $500 a shot, we are going with a generic and hope it works as well. If she can take ivermectin, it kills tapes and other intestinal UFO's.

As it is the heart worm treatment is $751, then we had xrays today. We are over $1,000 on this "free" dog.
