Vectra 3D or Activyl Tick Plus

My vet doesn't carry Frontline Plus anymore because it went over the counter.
They now carry Vectra 3D and Activyl Tick Plus.

Which one should I get?
Any opinions or experiences?

Thanks.

I have used vectra 3 last year as my vet in Illinois stopped carrying frontline. Vectra is perfect for Levi as it had a flea repellent ingredient in it and Lee has a horrible flea allergy. With frontline, the flea still needs to bite, in order for the pesticide in frontline effect the fleas. With vectra, they never make it on him. I've heard several vets not care for vectra as they feel the pesticide in it can be very harsh. So for me,it's a fine line. If I use frontline, Levi will end up with a rash all over his body and need steroids for itching, and antibiotic for the skin he has chewed and opened, all this monthly. Or I can risk the chemicals in Vectra and not have to take him monthly to the vet for the flea allergy. I've not experienced any negative side effects with vectra personally and have ordered some for this season.
Thanks for the info, Erin. I appreciate it.

Anyone else?
None from me - I don't use it.

But, I was wondering why you don't get the Frontline OTC now? If it was what you were using, just no need to get it from the vet now.
I have used either of those so no info--

My vet talked me into giving Trifexis a try this year. We do not have a big tick problem in the places we frequent so it has been fine so far. None of the three has had any upset stomach from it which seems to be the most frequent side effect.

Just FYI--Costco carries Frontline and has a pretty decent price point if you are a Costco member. I get it there for my son and daughter as they are still using that one.
I ended up buying the Frontline Plus at PetSmart.
Mainly because I know he tolerates it well and because I needed to treat him just before his surgery. I didn't want to add a wildcard just before surgery.

I've been contemplating moving him to something else as a lot of people are reporting reduced effectiveness of Frontline towards fleas.

So I'd still like to switch him at some point.
I know this an old post but I have an update to it.

So you guys know that Brick had a tick attached to his muzzle about a month ago.
My vet said to try the Vectra 3D and so I bought some.

Since the boys had their baths this past Sunday, now was a perfect time to try it.

I put it on Zeke in the morning (~ 8:30 AM).
After a few hours, I noticed he was itching a bit.
By 3:30 PM, he was itching more, trying to bite at his butt, and just could not get comfortable.

I looked at the application site and saw that it was all red and even inflamed in some spots.
I took him to the groomers with some Dawn dish washing detergent and had them bathe him with it.

The groomer said the red inflamed area looked like a chemical burn. 8O

He seemed to feel a lot better afterwards.
I called the company (Ceva) and lodged a complaint.
We'll go back to the Frontline Plus.

So we do NOT recommend Vectra 3D. It might work for others but not for us.

Glad I didn't put it on Brick, what with his Cushing's issue not sorted yet.
Wow! Thanks Mark!!
Sorry he had a reaction. Thanks for letting us know. Be sure and let your vet know as well. By the way, I use advantix.
We had tried the Vectra on our last dog a Newfoundland and had the exact reaction your Zeke did with the redness and swelling at the application site Mark. Since she had issues with allergies and her advanced age she was then switched back to what we had been using previously, K9 Advantix, it was losing its effectiveness in my part of the country so our vet recommended we apply it every 3 weeks instead of monthly. I have had no experience with the Activyl Tick Plus. Sending good thoughts for you and Brick.

Dawn do you not use any tick prevention? I am debating what to do. Between the heartworm stuff and the tick stuff, it feels like we are putting an awful lot of stuff on the dogs skin.
