Place to try out herding?

Ok, I'm a goober... I have this animal planet thing saved on my DVR that shows an oes that is a pampered pet going to a farm somewhere in virginia to try out herding. He actually is in the paddock with a few sheep right away, to see if his natural herding instict kicks in (which it does, and he herds them where he wants them to go, not necessarily where the trainer wants them to go).

I would LOVE to take my roobear somewhere like that!! Somewhere where I can watch his herding ability get flipped to "on"! Of course he already herds me and chases anything that moves so I am quite confident he will like the idea of sheep!

The problem is, WHERE is somewhere like that? I'm in Central Ohio, I don't want to drive more than three or four hours given that he'll probably be pretty darn filthy at the end. I've found places that do serious training, etc, I just want him to have a little bit of time with an experienced person out there doing the herding thing. I'm not looking to get into herding or anything (yet). I definitely need someone who knows what they are doing, as opposed to just renting some sheep.

Anybody else ever do this? Ideas? Suggestions? I've tried looking up herding clubs, there don't seem to be any around here, and what I've found is, as I said, serious, competing stuff. I don't want to compete. I want to have fun or at least watch Roofus having fun! :D

For a list of herding trainers, the Willow Acres site

Good Luck !!!!!!!!
kinda far but
www.magicslegacy.com

its in wisconsin,
ive been thinking about taking walter there for some time now. a lady i used to work with took her aussie shepherd and mini schnauzer there... both of em loved it!
Lol. How about a dog park? It's not sheep but Clyde herds the dogs anyway! :P
i love the idea of dog parks, but around here they start at $300 per year for a membership and some even have monthly dues in addition to the ridiculous annual fee! not that I don't love roofus and all but i do only make $8 an hour :)

i've checked out some of the links, the one that lists dog trainers in ohio will probably be the most help, i've e-mailed a few but probably with the holiday it'll be a few days before I hear something..

thanks a lot guys!! :)
My brother has a farm in Westminster MD where you'd be welcome to herd his ducks and geese! He also has 2-3 sheep and a number of goats. Not the same thing as a true herding / training experience, but I bet it would be hilarious to watch.

I've never heard of a dog park that required dues. Is that common?
Susan, I have never heard of a dog park that charges either. You dont have a city run dog park? Out here ours is sponsered by petsmart...you might want to call them to see if they sponser any parks by you!
The one we used to go to just started charging but it's only $50 a year. Even the county one is only like $5 a visit. $300 is pretty expensive.
Wow! We have a bunch of city run dog parks here that are free. I guess we're pretty lucky, Darcy! When I lived in Chicago there were a number of free dog parks too, one right on Lake Michigan so the dogs could go swimming.
:D 8O :D Not that Panda or Bailey would actually swim!!
yep, they're pricey..

http://barktildarkdogpark.com - $289/year
http://www.columbusdogpark.com - $395/year
http://www.pawspark.org - $150 plus $5 each time you go
http://www.barkpark.org - $150 plus $5 each time you go

i know they are working on one that is city run and free close to me (literally about five miles away), they are having some fundraisers and stuff to make it happen! Hopefully soon, it's crazy what they want for a bark park around here!

The first one is having a free day tomorrow and I'm taking roo because hey, it's free. :) I want to see what is so awesome that makes it $289 a year!!
Susan, Let us know what you get for those prices. I am totally intrigued!!
For 300 dollars they should wash and massage your dog when he's done! Maybe give the owner a facial or a pedicure too!

Our dog parks are nonprofit and run by volunteers. All donations and fundraisers. There's a parent company that tells you how to start your own park and where to get funding and such. I'll have to find it and you could show it to the people making cash off the park. What the heck does 300 dollars get you that our free parks don't have? I can't even imagine.

Take pics on free day and we'll see if it even looks any different.
Wow, I feel spoiled now! I live 10 minutes away from the largest dog park in the country...and it's completely FREE, not to mention the hours are from the break of dawn til dark. I probably would spend the money to join a dog park if I didn't have other options here though, it's just such a great thing to do.

About 40 minutes away is a sheepdog herding facility where I plan on taking Spike to go learn sheep herding and have fun pretty soon.

http://herdingusa.com/facilities.shtml
RollrXGirl, you are so lucky to live so close to a great facility like that!! I believe we have a place in Oregon but it is about 4 hours away. Maybe I'll put a few sheep in my backyard  That would keep Max busy for a while!

Sharon
well we went to the place, and it was fun for roo, but, well, not worth $289!!

roo made a bunch of new friends though, his favorite was a little westie named Oliver! Probably because Oliver acts just like our corgi Merlin who is definitely roo's best bud!

It was about 40 minutes from my house, and if it weren't for that I might consider it because they let you do a monthly payment... and my roommate and I could split it because you can bring all your dogs (three at a time though) on one membership.

You STILL have to pick up after your own dog..
The pond was a muddy muck, didn't even have a beach area, and I felt bad for the little dogs because the water was about a foot below ground level...
the "agility course" was a few sticks and a tire, and most of it was made for little dogs... (of course roo and his 120# glorious self was the biggest dog there!! quite a few labs but none measured up!)
There was absolutely no aggression testing... I would think for that much $$ they would do a temperment test! There were a few dogs there I thought should have stayed home, namely a fat italian grayhound and a very hyper weimeraner!

Roo has this issue, and he had it at daycare too, thankfully I found a daycare that dealt with it correctly, but anyhow, he has an issue where if a dog won't play with him or share its toys, he will get in its face and bark at it. Obviously, this is an issue, because he usually gets bit when the dog finally has enough and attacks. He did it at the bark park because a lab wouldn't share a dummy, and I immediately ran over and commanded NO BARK! Ending the situation before it escalated. The women sitting nearby looked at me like I was the meanest mommy ever and one said, "He's barking because he's HAPPY!" Yeah... that's why the dog is snarling at him! idiot!

Bah. So Roo had a wonderful time, and I'm going to see if I can help out with the free one they are trying to build! Because I don't see how it could be any worse than the $289 one :)
If have not already found them, we now have two free dog parks in the Columbus, Ohio area, one in Westerville and one in Gahanna. For more information on these parks and other Columbus dog links, check out this link.

 ENJOY!
Hi,

You can contact me at AuntEllenS@aol.com and I will give you suggestions for taking your dog to sheep.

If you want to come here ~ one hour SE of Columbus ~ your dog must have a nice come, stay, and down. ;)

Good Luck,
Ellen Schwab
Susan,

There's a herding instructor in Nova, Ohio (near Ashland) that a number of OES owners in Ohio have used, including me! She's very good with beginners and has a firm but gentle hand with the dogs.

Here's her info:

Judy Bigham, Hado-Bar Farm, 324 Country Road 1171 Nova, OH 44859 (419) 652-3647

She doesn't have e-mail.

If you just want to see what's involved in herding up close, she holds herding trials at her farm. Check the AKC website (events/herding trials) for more info.

Good luck! My OES loved it, except when the weather turned bad and she had to herd the sheep in the mud. That's where my little princess drew the line!

Sharon
 Somebody in a dog park mentioned to me that there is a place where you can pay to get your dog to herd in Anaheim Hills, Calif.? Does anyone know?

Thanks.
Don't know about Anahiem Hills but there is one in Malibu

Do you have an OES? Please join our forum. We recently have a 2-day old english sheepdog get-together last weekend hosted by one of the members, Elissa. You should come to the next SheepieFest of the West

It may be the east coaster in me but herding in Malibu sounds like heaven :)
Hi,

I'm with you. I live in Lorain County in Ohio and I, also, heard in our local dog park that there is a woman who owns a farm in a nearby county who "lends" her livestock out to people who would like to see if their dog has herding instincts. I have the biggest Border Collie in the world! We got him from a shelter and, we think, he's Border Collie and Bernese Mountain Dog. He looks like a Border Collie, acts like a Border Collie, but is 100 lbs.! But his herding instincts are amazing.

If you hear of any nearby "practice" place, just to see if our dogs have what it takes, please reply. Look forward to hearing from you.
Roofus and Susan.
My name is Bill, I live in Dublin Ohio, and I too, am looking for the same place. We just rescued an ACD/Blue heeler/Red heeler/Queens heeler named Callie"Barkson" (not my choice). My wife "heard about the same type of place, where you can let your doggie herd sheep and/or goats in the central Ohio area.
I am researching this non-stop. If I find out where it is I will let you know. Please return the favor if you figure it out first.
4-30-11 After seeing it on the Dog Whisperer, I am looking for a place to try out my Tibetan Sheepdog. I live in Columbus, Ohio. Mike
I have the same question (except I'm in Dayton and don't have an OES) I have a Border Collie puppy and can see the herding instinct in her when she rounds me up in the back yard. Chasing a ball/ring/stick just isn't the same thing; shes' learning how to retrieve, but that's clearly not her hearts' desire; i know she'd love a few sheep. A friend said he used to know someone who took their collie to someplace with sheep in the area and to Google it but no luck so far. So I was hoping someone would respond to your question, but seems like everyone talks dog parks. I'll keep checking back
