Eating may be a learned skill

I realized a few minutes ago that Dexter and Winston have never eaten a meal that didn't include kibble. They had ground chicken mixed in it for quite a while then when Winston had bad diarrhea we mixed in a little i/d at the vet's instruction.

Today is Trifexis day which is always a trail; we have covered them in peanut butter both whole and cut up. We also cut them up and stuck them in pill pocket treats. This month I got the brainstorm to pulverize them and mix it in a half can of the leftover I/d.

That is when I discovered the boys don't know how to eat food that doesn't include the texture of kibble! They tried licking it and only succeeded in packing it into the corners and sides of their bowls. They would look up at me periodically as if to say "How do we do this, Dad?" I ended up scooping some out on my fingers and letting them eat it that way! They licked the bowls shiny when the food was gone. At least they got all their pill wihout any of the usual trauma.

Poor babies. How frustrating! Glad they hand feed easily.
Had never thought of that-not knowing how to eat if not kibble-wil try Sprocket and see what he does-he loved rice pud as a very young pup and wouldn't eat at one stage so 'spect he be ok. At least the pills went though.x
