Sebaceous Adenitis

Carley was diagnosed with Sebaceous Adenitis recently. The medicine they have her on is very expensive. I am also not sure just how much it is helping her. Her skin is dry and it almost looks like she has dandruff. She is also losing hair in patches. She is itchy and the Dermatology Vet said she shouldn't be itchy. It has been an experience. First we took her to him and he did punch biopsies and sent them to be read. Then he put her on Vitamin A and an antibiotic. After the results came back he put her on Atopica and ketoconazole. She has now been taking those for about a month.
I noticed she is not losing any hair right now but she still has problems with itching and flakey skin.

Does anyone know anything about this condition? I know it deals with the sebaceous glands and I know how bad she looks. This is a lifelong condition and I would like to learn more about it. Carley is 6 so we will be dealing with it for many years. I want her to live a long life and I want her to be in as good condition health wise as we can do. I just want to help her feel better.
Thanks for your help.

Sheepdogs are prone to this, not as much as other breeds, thankfully. It is an auto immune condition which means you are in for a lifelong treatment regime. Since it is somewhat "new" in that it wasn't identified until a few years ago, treatment is hit and miss. It attacks the sebaceous glands and can destroy them. Also the itching could be a sign of further secondary infections. You attack two ways, topically with special shampoos like chlorhexidine or benzoyl peroxide applied several times a week to control or prohibit bacterial secondary infections and internally with oil supplements and the meds including perhaps steroids if things get a lot worse.

Vit A is a good start on the oils. I'd also add fish oils. MO didn't have SA but something similar and did very well on Salmon Oil (at the dog food store....pump bottle and $$) and Niacinimide (spelling is probably off) supplements...not Niacin. Took some looking around at vitamin stores but found it. The skin also needs oil topically. I've seen where mineral baths are recommended followed by shampooing. Seems self defeating. I wonder if there's a product that could be applied that wouldn't also be home to bacteria growth........much like we moisturize our skins. One thought is BioOil, it's a finer oil, not as complex as mineral oil. Years ago a dermatologist recommended sesame seed oil........but I ended up smelling like a Chinese restaurant.

Sorry you and Carley have this problem. Being autoimmune it's going to be a bugger.
