I know it's wrong but I'm still a bit sad

So we had our first herding session of the season last night. I was thrilled about it, Mady and Gracie were exploding with joy. And I am extremely happy, I really am. But there is a tiny part of me which is a bit sad, I know it's wrong, but I can't help it. Mady is good at herding, she has enormous drive, nothing in the world brings her as much joy as sheep, not even a juicy BBQ steak. But Gracie will be great at herding, she has so much natural talent for it, she has great balance, much calmer about it, she's a natural, like a 5 year old child who plays the piano effortlessly compared to a 15 year old who has to work a huge amount to do as well. It makes me a bit sad because I think of sheep herding as Mady's thing, and she has this upstart little sister waltzing in and being better. I know it's wrong, Mady wont compare herself to Gracie like people will, Mady doesn't care. And yes I'm bursting with pride that Gracie is so good at it, but I can't help that tiny bit of sadness.

It's not wrong to be sad. We all want all our animals to be perfect at everything. You have to admire Mady for her love of herding and for her zest and zeal. Sometimes things are more fun when you have to work for them.
The great thing is Mady doesn't know how you feel, so enjoys her herding with total glee....
Wow. Could Gracie maybe, just MAYBE have done well because it was me working with her? Did you ever think of that? Huh? Didya?

I think that you are being too hard on Mady. Remember that Mady was our first dog. We knew nothing when we started herding with her. Gracie gets to benefit from all of Mady's training of us. Mady got points in her very first trial! Despite her noob uprights! That is an accomplishment.
Don't feel bad, we as humans are always evolving and learning how to be better humans - trainers, team mates - in just about every dog sport there is.
I've been doing this in some form since I was training and showing dogs since I was in elementary school - and with every year and every dog I ALWAYS have some improvement planned...saying "with my next dog I'll do this...." and it never ends! So don't feel you are less of a person for a dog...they love us anyway. :hearts:
:hearts: Good is good enough, isn't it?
The joy is maybe more important and might give other qualities too, like persistence.
