Weight Loss Food suggestions

Hi All,
My boy needs to lose some weight! We walk everyday but I have a hip injury so we don't go very fast. As that improves, we will do more, but he needs a good weight loss food as well.
Recommendations?

When buster was over weight we reduced his food from 4 1/2 cups of Origen to 3 cups of Origen a day. We stooped freezer dry liver but fed either half a cup of tuna or a egg a day and then some fruit and veg treats.

When he got down to his recommended weight we went back to feeding 4 cups a day with his other food items and occasional freezed dry liver treats but not as many as before as they are high in calories.

We now feed 4 cups of NOW a day instead of Origen as Monty gets diarea on Origen. I think NOW is slightly less calories compared to Origen.

Buster was fine when we reduced his food 3 cups instead of 4 1/2 I thought he would be really hungry but he didn't seem any different. There was another Newfy owner who was only feeding 2 cups a day to reduce the weight of her dog on recommendation of her vet so we knew we wouldn't kill Buster.

It took about 8 months for him to get down to a good weight before we increased his food again to maintain the weight.

If you go this route you will have to work out how much you think you should reduce the food by, maybe the vet can help with this. I didn't want to change the food we were feeding him as Buster did well on the food we were feeding him - nice shiny coat and firm droppings. I was worried at the beginning that I was starving him, but he was fine and is a good healthy weight now.
James Wellbeloved does a "lighter" version. We put Fred on that for a while when he got a bit "portly" when I had a bike accident and couldn't walk far. He never seemed hungry (well,he was just like normal),didn't take long for him to be back to his healthy weight.x
My first Old English got me into trouble . . . "too many treats", and his vet recomended "green beans". Cut his food portions, but suppliment by an "equal" amount of green beans. He got to the point that he preferred kibble mixed with french cut green beans. Diabetes eventually made the french cut green beans a regular part of his diet. My thoughts are that the french cut (beans are cut lengthwise) are like eating grass, and he was half goat (sheep?) and ate grass every time he got a chance anyway, so . . .
Many of us have used the green bean diet for our dogs. Can, unsalted green beans. The dogs don't take to it at first, it's a gradual introduction but they will eat them when they realize the cookies have been stopped and the kibble amount is reduced. Glacier went from her rescue weight, a roly poly 156 to 90 on green beans. After she reached her weight and was off them for awhile, no way would she eat another!

It's as simple as using green beans in place of up to 50% kibble.

What food did you use? I would be interested.

Some things to look into:

Most feed bags now are listing "kcal/cup" - how many calories there are in each cup of dog food. There is a big range. Do some label reading, and you can check out the ones with less calories. This is true in the regular food s out there. (not counting the ones advertised as weight loss. In act the ones for weight loss really aren't that different. Just good advertising, and the dogs stay overweight!)

Also recommend the green bean diet. Helps them feel full and no calories.

Just feed less food ;)

I use NOW I get it from global pets which is 14th street and northmount drive NW Calgary, they have a deal of get every 8th bag free. Origen is another good kibble I would feed this if Monty didn't get the runs on it. Origen has some additional nutrients but is a bit rich for Monty's stomach. They both are doing well on NOW.
Yours is just a baby still isn't he? I wouldn't try to put a growing boy puppy on a diet... maybe a little less food and more time running around the yard if you have a yard, but I wouldn't do anything drastic.
I vote greenbeans. My dogs both thought it was the greatest thing in the world and lost 20lbs each in the process...it took about six months.
It's not my baby who is chubby, it's my 5 year old. Baby is doing great! 12 weeks and about 25 lbs!. Is that about right?
