Cooling vest

I was so excited to find classes within 3 miles of my house and i guess i wasnt paying attention. Went to the first clas and they are OUTSIDE, in South Florida! At noon! When I signed up, I took it for granted they would be inside! I'm really concerned about taking an OES in full coat out to work in the heat. Anyone have any experience with cooling vests? Do they work? Which one is best? This is the one I was thinking about. I was just thinking that this would let us continue the class (I already paid for it in advance). Will this work, or should i give up this class (and $$$)? http://www.hamiltonbiovet.com/arctek-co ... ling-vest/

That is crazy to have ANY dog out in your area in the sun at noon.... :(
Even if they didn't have heat stroke, everyone would be so miserable that it would be a pretty pointless class. Maybe on the beach with a good breeze....

I would be really hesitant about any vest (I looked at your link), as it compressed the coat and traps the dog's own body heat and doesn't let it escape. Now if your dog was shaved, it would be less of an issue, but full coat, I would never try it.
i live in fl and to be honest i have had oes for 30 yrs here in in the summer no way would i have them outside after 10am unless to pee and they are shaved .. right now here is no too bad how long is the class ? but after may i would say find an indoor place
I would not have them outside, nor would I be.
It's a 1 hour class and I am really surprised since this is at a very large facility that trains guide dogs for the blind, hearing impaired, etc. The area is shaded but..... I usually only let him out to do his business and straight back in when it's over 80. Today wasn't awful but there's 5 more weeks. It really stinks cause he already knows all the commands. I entered him to increase his focus under distractions. It defeats the purpose of the class if I can't take him and I'm not going to risk it when it's hot.

Thanks Dawn. I hadn't thought about the cooling effect not even getting though the coat. I think I'm going to try to ask for my $$ back and re-register somewhere inside.
Looks like this post was back in July...All I will say it if its too hot and uncomfortable for you, its too hot for your dog. And in July, in Florida, at noon, it is too hot for dogs to be working outside. Shaved or not.

Nope - this is a brand new post from April 14th - this Sunday.
Good news! I spoke with the training facility and they are going to: 1) refund my money or 2) transfer us to an indoor facility (40 miles away but hey) or 3) move the class indoors. They were actually very nice about it too.
That is great news!! Good to hear that they were helpful. You certainly can't be the 1st person to question this class, right?
I would have thought animal welfare would have paid some interest?
