When picking out puppy

Another question, I am looking at two male 12 week old puppies today, and does anyone have any suggestions how what to look for or what to do to check the puppies temperment or character? They are the last two of the liter and wasn't sure if there was a reason. Any suggestions would help. Thanks [/b]

oooh, what fun!

I'm assuming you've researched health issues and gotten the proper response from the breeder on the parents.....such as OFA registration number (hips), eye exam, hearing tests. Well then..........

1. Are the pups healthy? Clean, shiney coats (no fleas, ticks, etc) , no discharge from eye, ears, nose, etc. Check the bum for signs of diahrrea.

2. Check hearing. With puppy distracted, make a loud noise to make certain they can hear.

3. Check their tummies for signs of hernia around their belly button.

4. Very aggressive pups will be terrors... challenging you for dominace. Very shy pups, those that hide, may later become fear biters. With just two pups, this will be difficult. Pups should be curious, playful.

5. Check out the parents....neither should be aggressive (hopefully both present.)

6. Ask for vet records, have the pups received their first 2 shots, have they been wormed.

7. If you get a pup (Duh!) make sure you get the AKC registration, vet records and several days supply of food (if you can't readily get your own quickly).

Don't allow markings to be the sole reason you pick a certain pup. All sheepdogs are cute! Let health and temperament be your guide.

MY HUSBAND AND I JUST GOT BACK FROM A 2 HOUR DRIVE, TO LOOK AT A LITTER 4 WEEKS OLD. WE HAD OUR PICK, AS WE WERE THE FIRST PEOPLE TO SEE THEM. WE WERE INTERESTED IN A MALE OES, AND THEY HAD 3 OF THEM. WE HAD A HARD TIME DECIDING AS THEY SEEM TOO YOUNG TO TELL PERSONALITIES. WE HAD TO GO WITH MARKINGS ONLY, AND HAVE UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING TO CHANGE OUR MINDS. WE DON'T WANT A SHOW DOG, BUT WERE WONDERING IF IT MATTERS THAT THE ONE WE PICKED IS DEFECTIVE. WE LOVED THAT IT HAD ONE BROWN EYE WITH BLACK HAIR AROUND THAT EYE AND EAR, AND ONE BLUE EYE WITH WHITE HAIR ON THAT SIDE. THIS WASN'T THE PROBLEM, BUT HIS NOSE WAS ALMOST ALL BLACK, BUT SOME OF IT HAD NO PIGMENT. IT LOOKED CUTE AND THE BREEDER SAID IT WOULD ALL TURN BLACK, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW IF I COULD BELIEVE HIM! ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. :? :?:
Here is a previous thread on Pink Noses:

Think Pink! ;)
THANKS RON FOR THE INFO! I DIDN'T THINK I WOULD GET A RESPONSE SO QUICKLY, CONSIDERING I WAS ON THE FORUM SO LATE. THANKS AGAIN. I FEEL BETTER KNOWING THE PINK MIGHT GO AWAY, BUT IF IT DOESN'T, THAT IS OK, TOO. THAT WAS ONE OF THE REASONS I THINK I PICKED HIM, BECAUSE HE WAS UNIQUE.
I know that the anonymous poster/owner of "Shaggy Maggie Mae" was upset, but I found it somewhat humorous that they tattooed her nose. (The dog, not the owner :) ) Of course, if my vet did that without permission, I'd be upset too....

BTW, I Just clicked on the SEARCH icon just under the website name at the top of the page. The I typed in "pink AND nose", clicked on "Show as posts" (instead of "threads") and clicked on search, and voila!

It's so exciting to see how much good info is starting to be gathered here at the forum!
