How to remove long fluorescent tube lights?

I have a double fluorescent fixture in my garage. Best estimation of length is 9 feet. The bulbs need to be replaced since they are flickering and have been there since I moved in 8 years ago. I got up on a ladder (oh, mamma, that's scary) but cannot figure how to remove the bulbs. I thought maybe they snap in but I can't see it. My bro-in-law will be here Sunday but he's marginally better than I am at this stuff. Vance, Mark, Ron, I'm counting on you for instructions.

There are usually one of two ways to remove them. One is where the bulbs are held in with spring loaded ends and you need to firmly grip the bulb and push against the spring loaded end, thus moving the bulb enough to drop the bulb out of the carriage.

The other way and typically with older fixtures is to turn the bulb until the two pins on each end come out of the slotted carriage.

Replacing either bulb is a simple reversal of the above.

Usually you have to rotate them about 90 degrees to unscrew them, then you should be able to pull it out.
If the bulbs have two prongs on each end you have to twist the bulbs in their socket 90 degrees and they'll slide out through the slots. If they are a single prong, one socket on one end will be spring loaded and you just push it in one direction and it will come out.

They are probably 8 ft not 9 foot they don't come in that size.

This info is from my hubby, Chuck, anymore problems I can give you his phn number on private message and he'll be happy to talk you through it.
I've just had the 2 prong/rotate and remove ones.

I find the 8 years of flickering funny...that would have driven me nuts and up onto a ladder within days!! ;)
What everybody else said.
They haven't been flickering for 8 years! That's just a recent thing which I assume means they need to be replaced.

How will I know if they are spring vs. rotate?
OK, I didn't think you really would let it flicker that long.... ;)

You just try to twist and remove, or to push them in on one end (or the other) to see which way they pop out. Or if you are lucky they left a spare bulb around and you could look at it? No, that would be too lucky. :(
And I would get a helper for that long a bulb.
paula,
eat cookie dough when you want, but please wait for bro-in-law to replace an 8ft bulb.

  I AM going to wait for him. No way could I do this on my own I'd end up dropping the things.

Violet, tell Chuck thanks for offer of long-distance consultant. I'll save him for the BIG things!

Ok Paula. Anytime you need his help he's more than happy to help.
The upside to dropping a bulb is that they make an extraordinary cool noise that you can't reproduce by any electronic or digital means. Downside is the gas inside, (now outside!) is toxic and the glass goes EVERYWHERE. Either way, REALLY cool and fun stuff always has it's risks. Don't say I didn't warn you/

Bro-in-law got the lights out. I now know they are spring loaded. Hopefully I won't have to replace them for another 8 years!
