Mopsy turned 10!

Hey just wanted to let everyone know that Mopsy made it to the big 10! (june 21st)
I posted yesterday but the post got lost due to the server crash. I apologize to those of you who already saw this. Here is a basic recap:

We were thrilled to celebrate ten years because Mops was diagnosed with hip displaysia at about eight months. She took Etogesic for several years but about a eighteen months ago we switched her to Rimadyl and Glucosamine twice a day. She did great for a while but last July she could hardly get up one morning and my husband and I figured that we might not have her for another year. But she has persevered and while getting up can be a struggle (especially on hardwood which she insists on lying) but once she is up she does alright. And she has learned to go for slow walks so that she doesn't limp. Emotionally she still acts like a puppy and still likes to play and trot down the hall after a ball though for a shorter duration.

The bithday went well. She loves birthdays especially her own and yaps when she hears the Happy Birthday song. I took off work and we spent the day together working in the yard - she laid in the mulch pile like a pig. She got new toys which she refused to share with her human brother (who wasn't interested in them anyway) by grabbing her toy when he walked by and made the "tough" growling noise. This resulted in being hollered at on her birthday for not sharing :( . She got a larger cake than usual and subsided on that for a few days. She didn't have a crying jag about that like she does over eating Science Diet.

I would love to hear from any other members who may had/have lame sheepdogs who lived past ten and what we can expect. Thanks for your help.

Happy Birhtday dear Mopsey, happy birthday to YOU!!!! :bdcake:
Happy Birthday Mopsy!!

Sounds as if Mopsy had a very special day celebrating...birthday cake, a toy and of course spending it with her favorite person all day. Sounds wonderful!

Regarding the question you asked, my previous OES, Shaggy had trouble climbing down stairs but seemed to manage them fine going up. As a result I had to carry her down the stairs the last six months of her life, but as she was very small for a sheepie, I could manage. She had been on glucosamine and the eventually Medicam to control her arthritis.

Hope that helped, and I'm sure if you click search at the top of the page you'd find lots of info from previous post as to various methods that have been tried to make it comfortable for our aged friends.

Give Molly a belly rub from me and the boys, whom send sloppy kisses her way. Tell her they all think she's beautiful regardless of her age. May you continue to have many happy days with Mopsy. Ahh just love that name- perfect for a sheepie!

A very Happy Birthday to Mopsey!!!!!!

My Norman is 12 years old and has trouble getting up and down because of his hips. He really didn't start having problems until about 3 years ago when he just slowed down a little bit. 2 years ago we got a puppy and after the first 2 months Norman really started to act younger and get some more spunk back.
A few things that we do to help him:
He gets Glucosamine every day. We'll probably have to go up to Glucosamine/Chondrointin or another level up soon.
We help him up from a sitting position. A little boost of the back end does wonders! Sometimes he looks like a cartoon character running in mid air. His feet are moving but he's still sitting down. There is a great product that works like a handle for helping dogs up. I'll have to get the name of it from home and post about it. We also help him when he's on slippery surfaces. If you just put your foot in front of his back feet it helps him get a little leverage to push up with; mainly because the loss of traction on the slippery floor makes his muscles work that much harder.
Warming him up or massaging his hips helps too. If he's been laying in one position or somewhere that's chilly we rub his hips to loosen them up. The less stiff he is, the better he moves.
We also take him swimming. The low impact excercise helps to keep his muscles a little better conditioned while not hurting his joints.

Hope Mopsey is doing well! You should celebrate her birthday for an extra day since we are all just getting to read about it now!
Happy Birthday! :) :bdcake: :clappurple:
Happy Birthday Mopsey!!!!!

Daisy and the boys send a big back of treats(sorry, Rosco ate some  )
Happy birthday, Mopsy! :bdcake: :clappurple: They say the first 10 years are the hardest!

Drez is slowing down noticeably over the past 8 months or so, since her hip surgery. We have to help her get up sometimes, too, especially if she's on plain floors. But she insists on trudging up the stairs if we're both upstairs, so I take that as a good sign. Going down the stairs - now that's a different subject. She's almost petrified, but with someone standing in front of her, she gives it her all.

Just enjoy Mopsy while you have her. If I start thinking about how much longer we'll have Drez, I get too depressed. Have to convince myself to live in the "now."

Good luck with Mopsy and keep us posted.

Chris
Beau limps badly because of his cancer. Even with that he is still a happy guys, eats and sleeps well. Of cousre he likes to sleep on the ceramic tile so getting up is a challenge, but all in all he's doing okay. Like Chris I try not to think about tomorrow because it only makes me cry.
Thanks for all the good wishes and input. The foot as leverage for the back paws sounds like a good idea. I am enjoying the time I have left but I do worry about her being in pain. I guess she will let me know. Although being a sheepie what she has in brains she lacks in good sense.

By the way, I keep telling her everybody is wishing her happy birthday - so she is getting extra mileage out of the event! And I froze the last piece of cake for the 4th of July.
Hi,

Forgot to mention that I recently read a book which showed slipping a towel underneath a dog's belly and gently lifting, will assist them to get up. Might also be worth trying.

>>sending more belly rubs Mopsy's way
Happy belated Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!
