I get to go to the hospital to cheer up folks

2 Weeks ago Buster passed the test with PALS an organization here in Canada that uses pets for therapy.
We had to wait for Russ`s police clearance before Buster and Russ could do any visits.

Today Buster did his first visit to a Hospital.
Here is Russ and Buster before they left:

Buster was chewing on his new leash, was it a protest on going 8O .....no just Buster.

They had a good time.
Buster had a slight issue with the elevator, he couldn't settle down, he didn't know what to do so he kept getting up and sitting down and then pulling to get out when the elevator stopped.
He greeted alot of people for pettings and had his photo taken and delighted people with his presence.

I am just a little jealous I don't get to take Buster, it is one person one dog here when volunteering and Russ wants to do it as I take Monty to agility.

I ordered some slobber towels for Buster which fortunately arrived today, before they left. Just as well as one came back soaked.

I also ordered him a bib with his name on it which he will wear when we go to the in-laws for dinner.....now that is another slober fest.

Congratulations Buster and Russ :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

Buster is very handsome in his new bib and leash. He is going to make many new friends and create quite a name for himself around the hospital
Does he get to visit children also?
Congrats. I might look into that one. St. Johns turned us down because mine eat raw. :(
Well should have googled before I got excited for Alberta :(
:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: BUSTER!!!!! :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:
He is Very Handsome! I know I would have been thrilled to see, hug and kiss him! Nothing like a dog to help in healing :hearts: :hearts:
Congrats to Buster!
We have a Newfie in our therapy dog chapter. They aren't real active w/ visits, as Lura's mom is elderly and she is her primary caregiver.
When Chewie and I did our Disaster Stress Relief Dog team tryouts, there were 2 Newfies and they both made it.
Towels are a given with them, for sure. I have a young newfie (and young handler - he's 15) in my beginner obedience classes this session. He came unprepared, and I saw him look around, then swipe the slobber with his own sweatshirt sleeve! We have hand towels (regular cotton ones) that we use for cleanups - and I told him to grab one each class to use for his puppy. :D My mastiff in the advanced class does the same too - grabs a towel as soon as he walks in.

Elevators do take work. Bond is just learning to get comfortable in them. He wasn't ever bad, but got a bit restless in them at 1st. We just don't have that many opportunities to be in them. Of course it helps that he learns from Chewie, who is rock solid. This weekend we had to ride one for the 5 levels in the parking ramp (When we worked at the Pet Expo in Mpls). This one had a glass back to it, facing out onto the sidewalk and streets) - so we played "look at all the people" happy game out the window while riding in it each time. :) It worked - Bond thought it was so fun! :D

Can both of you test with him? We are allowed to have more than one handler be certified with a dog - as long as both people take the entire test and pass. We have a couple dogs where both husband and wife are certified with the same dog. And one where 2 friends are both certified, so either may take the dog on visits.

Congrats - those are great photos!!!
Congrats on doing such a great job. Newfies are another one of my fav dogs.
Oh Buster

I miss my Newfie Abbott.
Great job Team Buster.

Buster looks wonderful in the new bib.
I think newfies would make awesome therapy dogs. They are pretty laid back and love to be loved. And their coat makes you want to touch them and hug them.
Buster gets to visit the main hospital, so no kids there as they go to the children hospital. He went to critical care units which were mainly very old people who are terminal and two psychiatric wards. Apparently there was a lot of dropped food on the floor in the common area which Buster was going for  but otherwise he was good.
I think I can go with Russ as a visitor.
Congratulations to Buster and Russ! Sounds like the visit went very well.

The first few times Hudson was on an elevator it made him a little anxious.
He kept looking at his paws and the floor as if to question what was making
it all feel so different. But after a few times on an elevator now he doesn't
think twice about them. I do have to ask him to "wait" when I know the elevator
door is about to open or he will try to march out as soon as the door opens.
It makes sense. Why would a dog NOT expect to walk through a door when
it magically opens up right in front of him.
