Looking for a great breeder and gender recommendation :)

Hi Everyone,

I have been reading a lot of the posts lately and decided to join. We are wanting to adopt an OES puppy within the next couple of months. We have 3 children and are now ready for the last missing pieces of our family :) I am not sure if we want a male or a female yet...

I have been looking at the AKC recommendation for breeder but all the breeders I have contacted in Florida were not planning on breeding any time soon. The only one that may is Elizabeth Fujikawa. Any one has experience with her?

I would not be opposed to having a puppy shipped to us or even driving to pick him/her up. Anyone has recommendations on reputable breeders that you have used or know? I am glad I found this website because the person I was about to contact was on the list of BYB horror stories...

It seems like the going rates are between $1400 and $2000. Is this accurate?

Lastly, any real difference between having a male or a female OES?

Thank you so much for your time and I can not wait to be able to post a pic of our new addition :)

Liz would be an excellent choice. Very reputable, nice dogs and she does a nice job of health testing. She used to live up here in the Chicago area. Consider yourself lucky if she's planning a litter.

Gender is a more difficult question. Many of us have our preferences, but they're mostly based on personal preference/our own personalities ;-) The most important thing for you, especially with kids, more so if they are younger, is the puppy's personality, regardless of gender. You want a middle of the road kind of puppy - confident without aspirations of running the place ;-) Liz would know this.

In the US puppy prices seem to be in the $1500-2500 range. And, just FYI - you don't adopt a puppy from a breeder - you buy one. Adoption is the term used for rescue dogs. True, you also pay for them, but in those cases it's called an adoption. That term has somehow bled into acquiring a dog by any means. Not a big deal, though as a breeder when someone tells me they are looking to adopt a dog it makes me wonder how dog savvy they are and if they are of the dogs are furry children mindset who won't know how to raise one properly ;-) Not saying that's the case with you at all, and I know it's just semantics. But, you know how it is, until you know someone you tend to form impressions on kind of trivial things.

Fingers crossed for you :crossed:

Kristine
Thank you Kristine :) I am sorry about the error in semantics... Just saying "buying" a dog makes it less personal for me :)

I will definitely keep on emailing Liz :)
Another A+ rating for Liz Fujikawa here. She is a long time breeder with an excellent track record on all counts. I would sign up for one of her pups in a moment if looking for one.

As far a gender preference, I love the girls and the boys. Girls tend to be a bit smaller, so less work brushing due to sheer size differential, so that may be a consideration for you as grooming is a major task for this breed unless you will keep your dog in short coat.

Good luck with your new adventure!

Liz is an excellent choice. My opinion on the differences between the boys & girls? The boys....their sun rises & sets on you. They will do anything for you without question. At least mine will. The girls are equally nice but in the same situation you will find them thinking "what's in it for me?". That being said, I have had both at the same time over the years & presently have 2 girls & 2 boys.
Boys are giant marshmellows, as discussed at length here: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=40110

Whatever dog you end up with I am sure you will love. My boys are pretty great, very laid back and yes, very much think the boys are very devoted and they do think the sun rises and sets with you (most of the time). :)
