Looking for a puppy

We are an older couple that use to have Afghan Hounds and an OES years ago. We are looking for a puppy for our home. We recently lost our pet Sheltie and would like to give an OES a good home. Our grandson can't bear to come over and not see his old friend greet him at the door. We are responsible pet owners and would love to share our home with a new friend.
Thank you for any help you may give us.

Well, first off, welcome to forum!!

Secondly, it might help if we knew where you were and what do you consider as a puppy. I know this sounds odd, but are you wanting an eight to ten week old or six to ten month old puppy?

How old is your grandson? Is he old enough to understand that a puppy can have the strength to knock him down and not realize what they're doing? With this now said, have you considered a rescue that might not be quite so rambunctious?

I'm just asking questions to help and hope you understand.

Vance
Thank you very much for your reply. We are looking for an OES under 9 months old. We have looked at some of the rescue OES, but have found nothing that fits the age level, but we would love to foster one or two if any are available. We would also be interested in an older one that loves children. I work with special education students and would have the dog at school with me often. We have a large fenced in yard and looking for a house pet as well as one that enjoys playing outside.
Our grandson is 6 and is a gentle natured responsible little man. His parents have a Husky that he is very gentle with and yep he has learned what it feel like to be knocked down. We carefully supervise his playing with his dog to make sure he doesn't get hurt.
The OES we had 20 years ago was a rescue and she learned to climb our 5 foot fence. Miss Daisy would go over to our neighbors house and herd their children over to our yard. Most of the time the parents were amused by her actions, but when they moved the new neighbors were not. We didn't have the heart to put her on a chain or keep her locked in the house while we were at work. We finally found a home in the country where a gentleman raised sheep. Daisy lived the rest of her life fostering baby lambs and herding.
We are not interested in breeding OES's and they would be spayed or neutered.
Please feel free to ask any questions and thank you very much for your help.
Our OES loves kids like crazy I know this is often written in the breed write ups that they are nanny dogs. This is partly because the breeder we got him from had a young granddaughter that Leonard was best friends with. He plays nicely with our young nephew and I have taken him into my school before and he was very good with my kindergarten to grade five kids. If you do go the puppy route maybe look for a breeder who has kids around the puppies on a regular basis and has their puppies in the family space and not in a barn or basement so they are used to the action. I am certain this made a huge impact in how my dog sees kids and people in general.

What country are you in? People on here may have recommendations about breeders and rescues in your area/country.

I agree....when properly bred and socialized, the OES is a wonderful family pet who is fantastic with children of all ages. I have three children who would sleep in the whelping box if I let them (which is in my bedroom) when we have pups!
We live in Missouri and would be greatful for any information on a rescue organization. After much talk, my husband and I agree that if we could find an OES that is fairly young we would be willing to be foster parents. We would like one that likes to be groomed as well. As a prior groomer I took great pride in our Afghan Hounds, OES, and Shelties looking nice and being comfortable.
That being said, there have been times that we have given our dogs a puppy coat cut when the weather was really hot. You never know what the summers are going to be like here.
We are still looking for an OES. Would consider an older dog that needs a retirement home. The house is just too empty. Really would like one that likes to be groomed and loves kids.
Stay in touch with TX OES rescue.
Please be patient - and be aware that traveling could be involved . . . my second OES was 1,300 miles one way, my third came to me, my forth was 300 miles one way. It takes a bit before people warm up, I has had dealings with Tarheels (Tenn) and BL was a pleasure.
I have adopted from 2 yr olds to 10 yr olds from OES Rescue and they check for any character flaws and let you know upfront - then you decide if you can live with the flaw. The 3 I had/have from rescue will be precious to me always . . . they are already trained (enjoyment from day 1), inexpensive (compared to puppies), healthy . . . and if something happens to you (god forbid) OESR takes the dog back, and makes sure they are safe, and that they will go to a GOOD home (which is a worry gone from me)

Thank you to everyone for all your help. We are still looking and I know that we will find and OES that needs a home some day. This truly is a wonderful forum and it brings a smile to our lips and song in our heart to hear how much everyone loves their OES family members.
I for one, am glad to see you hanging out and learning from the group. Keep looking and the right Sheepie will find you; they always seem to!!!

You may have to relax your criteria a bit. OES are not popular and as you have discovered, rescues can be hard to find. A young adult is fine, but you might have to add a few years to that. Kensie is about 7 and very active. Yes, we won't have a dozen years together but she is all I could want in a dog........OK not having heart worm would have been nice and a lot softer on the pocket book, but she is coming along fine.........she says, "Phooey" to this business about remaining calm during treatment.

Anyway, if this breeds is for you, you won't stop at just one. Having one on hand will make getting the second less stressful. I urge caution in your area. There are plenty of puppy mills with poorly bred and completely nonsocialized pups.......if the breeders think there's a profit in the breed, they show up in packs. Right now small dogs are popular so puppy mills are cranking those out.

Your MO rescue lady, Carol, can tell you more. I hope you've been in contact with her.
belinda form tarheel rescue just got a young girl in also did you look on petfinder.com
