Frankie's hearing tests results

Frankie was the perfect gentleman today during his Baer test.

He is deaf in his left ear, and has hearing in his right.

Just as I thought.
I still almost cried when she told me the results.
It's really not a big deal, we will just start using sign language.
The vet said if he ever got away from us he could get directionally confused.
This is just one more thing that makes Frankie our special little boy.

Honestly, this is no big deal and you don't need sign language. He can still hear you (no matter what he tries to tell you  ) unless he's sleeping on his good ear. Vet is correct about possible directional confusion, but most unilaterally deaf dogs compensate so well I'm surprised you even realized he's deaf.

Fellow OES agility competitor ran a unilaterally deaf dog for years. I had no idea until my then commonsense-challenged boyfriend let his Aussie jump on the dog while she was napping (on her good ear) and she startled. He'll be fine.

Isn't it a cool test? I get my litters tested as babies and they tend not to agree <g> but I find it fascinating.

It was really neat. The vet says she hates to test older dogs, but he was so good.
I think he has a vision problem also. That's my next venture.
He crashes into walls on occasion.

Yeah, a vet said the same thing to me (hates testing older dogs) but I don't drag my puppies to vet offices when they're 6 weeks old (and tiny and easy to handle) so they're 8-10 weeks old by the time I have them tested and plenty able to throw little fits. 8) In fact, Dawn's perfect Chewie threw a hissy and almost pulled the equipment off the table (it costs tens of thousands of dollars :twitch: :twitch: :twitch: ). But Becky took the cake. I almost had a heart attack thinking she was unilaterally deaf till we realized she'd pulled a needle out. After that it took three of us to hold her  My adult dogs would never behave like that, and clearly, neither did Frankie. 8)

Obviously this won't do you any good, but OESCA is, apparently (not sure this is 100% yet), doing a BAER clinic at the National this year in St Louis, if any of you in the area/or planning on coming in would like to have your dog's hearing tested. I don't know what the pricing will be, but it's generally cheaper to do so as part of a clinic than going to a vet's office. i think my first litter was something like $60/puppy (8 puppies - regular vet visit), almost 7 years ago. The last one (2011) was almost $100/puppy (3 puppies), but I think the more you have done at once, the lower the cost per. Plus, Becky took us so long I don't begrudge the vet a single penny

Yep, pretty much sums up my dh too.
this also make frankie a very special boy
Glad the results are what you expected. Give him a big hug from me for being a good boy.
Hugs to Frankie for being a good boy, and extra cookies too!
Good boy Frankie!! So glad it isn't devastating for him and he will do fine. Its hard not to worry though.

Once again, it is so comforting to have such a knowledge pool here when things are awry. :clappurple:
What a good lil man Frankie is what a sweetie.
Mr. Gus says join the club.

Gus was BAER tested at the age of 3 months and found to be deaf in his right ear with normal hearing in his left. Which is why his first upright family returned him to his breeder. He finally found a home in our town, but that only lasted a few months until the family dissolved and Gus was once again looking for a new home. Gus came to us on the day before his 1st birthday, the day his old home was sold and he was scheduled to go to the Animal Shelter.

Gus will be celebrating his 8th birthday on Sunday and, if you didn’t know better, you would never suspect he has a hearing problem. We have about 1/3 acre of our back yard fenced off as Gus’s domain. He's in and out all day long, so much so that I feel like his personal doorman. He can be at the far end of the yard, looking the opposite way, and when I tap on the glass atrium door he turns his head, looks at me, and, if he is of a mind to, comes running. It’s the “if he has a mind to” that’s another story …

Your boy Frankie will do just fine!
