To cut the hair around the eyes or not?

What is the general consensus re' cutting the hair around an OES's eyes?
My groomer has been, but today we were told to never do it again.
Sometimes we think he can't see and sometimes we know it acts as a kind of sunglasses for him?

It really is personal preference.
Either way, they need to be able to see.

I like it long, and my dogs wear it pulled up all the time. One topknot, pigtails, we do lots of fun hair stuff.
Right now Chewie has 2 pigtails, and Bond has 2 ponytails - a single topknot, with another anchored in behind it. Bond has so much coat that it tips forward with just one!

Chewie - taken back in December. He is growing his back out. I gave him a haircut and cut it all about 1-2 inches long all over.
Dexter wears a topknot. When it gets loose I say "Let's do your hair" and he walks up and sits facing me to let me brush it back and make another topknot.

Winston has his cut away from his eyes. He likes a topknot but Dexter doesn't want him to have one; he walks up and pulls it out within seconds of us putting one in. We would pick up the elastic and redo it so Dexter started eating them when he pulled it out. Winston's hair trim is more for Dexter's protection.
Over the years I've trained Violet's hair to be parted down the middle and it pretty well stays that way now. Oes don't have magical eye power where they can see through the hair, so many trim the hair away from the eye, but I think most pull the hair up in a top knot or two.
Whenever I have show people look at Yuki... they say "don't cut the hair between the eyes/over the nose! Ack"

I try and try not to... but it starts irritating "me" and always give in and trim. :)

I agree though, it's just a preference.

Who told you not to do so and what was their reasoning?

With dogs i keep in a puppy cut I definitely trim up along their muzzle, between and over their eyes. A long time performance friend taught me that and her dogs always look great.

One way or another they have to see. 8)

I got into an argument with some old bat at an agility trial that was held in a Madison area park about a decade ago. I was running Belle and had her head coat up in horns so she could see (well, duh!) and said know-it-all-just-passing-by-stupid-wombat came flying up to me between runs and started telling me off because by allowing the light to hit her eyes she was going to go blind. I tried to tell her that was an old wives tale but to no avail  8)

I have been told by so many people you aren't supposed to pull the hair back from their eyes or cut the hair. I usually run into these people at the park/when on a walk and I am guessing it is an old wives tale of sorts. My husabnd's aunt swore he was going to go blind if I pulled his hair back, this was just after he had run into a post because his clip had fallen out and I was getting it back in.

If you don't pull back their hair it will be in their eyes and they WILL run into things and get hurt. Leonard's is pulled back in an elastic or mini clip and he is really good about letting me pull it back. I have braided it and done pigtails too. I don't like to cut the hair because I am always worried it will poke his eyes when it starts growing back in. That and I LOVE the look of a shaggy face with a little "sheepie tail".

I recently found the most perfect elastics at Shoppers Drug Mart, they are thick but little and don't snag in his hair or stretch out right away. They stay put for a couple days. They cost about $3.00 for 75 elastics. They are made for little girls and are slightly coloured and have glitter in them but Leonard doesn't mind. Mini clips are good and quick but I find he breaks them if he wears them to the park.
It needs to be either trimmed (if it's short) or held away from their eyes with clips or bands (if it's long). If you come across someone who doesn't understand that, invite them to put on a blindfold and see just how long it takes before they run into something.

I know we all have "super-sheepies," but I don't think any of them have developed x-ray vision just yet!
