Ruptured Anal Gland!

Sooo, yuck. I would like to first say. Second, I would like to say that Ramsey should have given me some indication something was wrong! But no, no butt scooting, licking, biting, NOTHING!

Last night, I was randomly going over the dogs, as I tend to do because I don't like to have issues, and I like to pride myself in having clean, healthy pups!

I see Ramseys umm, hole, looking a little red, a little sore looking. I bring him into the bathroom for further inspection. I clean him up and it doesn't smell like the fishy, anal gland smell, it smells like a straight infection. So I clean up the hair all around him, trim a little bit more fur away, and put some neosporin on the area and bring him to the vet today, hoping for a little better news.

Vet checks him out, apparently it has ruptured. Poor Ramsey!! He never has given an indication he was in pain, or anything. Even at the vets, with his finger all up in there, Ramsey just had his head tucked under my arm, not a peep! Walked outta there all in his normal saunter like when he walked in!

He got a heavy duty shot of antibiotics and some expressing of both glands, which smelled normal now. On antibiotics for 12 days and I have to keep the area extra clean. I am going to trim him up some more tonight, even tho he is pretty trimmed there. Might shave him into a baboon! Kidding!

Happy Thursday to me!!! Anyone know if there is anything else I should be doing aside from the antibiotics and keeping it extra clean for now??

Obviously I will be keeping an eye on him closer for any of these issues. My vet thought it could have happened if I had changed his food or treats, which I haven't. My thoughts are it happened because during our walks, he goes to the bathroom normally, then a bit later, it's always a bit liquidly because he gets so excited. I clean him up after walks (don't need that in the house) but maybe I need to clean him more thoroughly.

Yeah, sounds like he needs a bit more bulk in his diet. Poor guy and poor you. I've resorted to baboon clip when things were especially messy, but it all grows back quickly.
Thanks Susan! I will have to look up some more bulk for the lil guy!!
So sorry to hear your pup is ill. I had a Samoyed many years ago. His anal gland ruptured and he needed surgery. Also, no symptoms. He had the surgery and it was not an easy one. recovered but wasn';t a fun time. Hope your pups problem clears up with the antibiotics. :crossed:
Thanks Diane, was the surgery to remove it??

I hope they do too, poor guy! Although, he's acting COMPLETELY FINE. Hope the antibiotics clear it up and he stays ok.
Yes Bridget. He had the anal gland removed. It was many many years ago so I'm sure they do things differently now. Hope your baby is doing better!
This just happened here. No indication that anything was wrong until I smelled the infection. He just finished up the last of his meds about 3 days ago and seems to be doing fine. So hope that we are out of the woods because the option of surgery scares me since he seems to have trouble coming out of the anesthesia. Hope Ramsey feels (and smells) better soon.
Thanks Diane!!

Yeah Kim! Scary! Hope your baby is doing fine!!!!

So far he is doing well, you wouldn't even know it, still on antibiotics. I trimmed more back there, there really is nothing more I can trim up, lol. Just still keeping an eye on it!
