This is Embarrassing

Like in AA I will just come out and say it

I have toenail fungus

Egads, that was hard...and embarrassing.

I don't think its anything I've done to cause it. I also have another problem that I've been putting off...My big toenail...on the outside it sloops sharply and it sometimes hurts, almost like its ingrown even though its not.

I made an appt with a podiatrist in the morning. This has been a long time coming. I HATE going to see someone about anything but now I HAVE to. For a few days its been difficult to walk(limping) because my right big toe has been hurting. I checked it and it seems that the nail on both sides is growing inward. When I trimmed it back you could see the indentation from where the nail had been.

I've tried different OTC medications for the fungus that don't work so now I'm down to my last resort...a professional. I really don't want to go and have someone mess with already sore toes but its that or pain

Toenail fungus is really, really tough to treat.
There are meds you can take, but even the prescription stuff is marginally successful.
I have a big toe like that, and mine was caused by a traumatic injury to it - then the nail fell off and it grew back deformed. I had it surgically removed twice, and it won't fix itself. It has the same edges that curl in and if it keeps growing will become ingrown. I battle it all the time, and keep it short because of that. Ugly :( Also, Chewie invariably stomps on it...that toe, not the other foot! :(
Of note....my client has the fungus too, and he is trying trials of homeopathic treatments. If you look online you can see many of them. All of them (even the Rx meds) are slow and long term commitments. The 1st one he did was the Vicks treatment - he did it for almost a year, and had some success. I'd say it was 50% effective. Now he's doing the mixture of vinegar and Listerine (original - the amber stuff). That one has really worked well! After several months you could see a line of healthy nail growing out. We like doing this and have inquiring minds, so now he's doing a control - applying it to 1 foot, and no treatment to the other. ;)
Good luck....the pain is so nasty!
Topicals rarely work. Hopefully the doc can find a way other than the long term pills which are hard on the rest of your body and just marginally successful. Good luck.

I'm married to Mr. Toe Nail fungus, I cringe when I see his nails.
My husband toenails are icky. He's got a fungus too and have seen many specialists for it. He's tried every topical and basically was told the only way to permanently remove it was to remove the toenail and get it.

Although I saw a groupon for laser treatment for toe fungus that seemed a lot easier but it was like pay 199 ..originally like 399 for ONE toe. Holy cow.
I bought a groupon $299 for all ten toes. That was three months ago and I see clear healthy nails coming in.
AND, the treatment doesn't hurt.
thanks devra,
sounds like the best plan. best oral prescription is not good for the liver, can't recall the name. 8)
I had it, probably got it from the swimming pool or public shower.
I tried all the home remedies.....vapour rub, vinegar, tea tree oil. None got rid of it.
I got prescription pills from the doctor but they can damage your liver so you have to go and have blood tests periodically to check that it is not damaging your liver. I did not drink at all on these pills.
It is gone now, but if it came back I don't think I would do the pills again as I think it is a risk. My 70 year old friend who had toe nail fungus was recommended by the doctor not to take the pills because of her age.
Pull it off. Mine tend to drop off when they get stamped on playing rugby. Hurts for a few days but in the end you get a bright new toe nail. So in the long run you would be better off
p, no. ouch. :cow:
I accidentally kicked something three times over a three month period. The nail was loose and I tried to be very careful to avoid fungal infection. I apparently damaged the nail bed, as it has taken 5 years to grow out and it still is only 2/3 as long as my other big toe nail.
I ended up with fungus, tried the topical with no success. What did seem to work for me was rubbing an antifungal cream into the skin next to the cutical and the crescent shaped area, where the nail actually grows.
Out of curiosity, what causes a toenail fungus?
Home now. I have to say that I actually liked the Dr. She didn't touch my hurty toes. She just looked. Very upfront about everything. Drew me a picture :) Very informative. You don't get the fungus from a shower or touching toes with someone who has it. She told me that everyone has fungus under the toes and fingernails. With a warm moist environment it tends to me more and grows. With toes you have less blood movement and winter when toes are covered with warm socks and shoes it tends to grow faster. Where the nail bed starts is actually a little below where we can see and thats where the problem starts and the reason it can't be fixed with topicals. As I said, very informative :)

Now the bad, which is the reason I have put this off for so long. In order to fix the misshapen toe nails I have to have a portion of the toenail removed, both big toes and on both sides of the toe  and have the root destroyed so it doesn't grow back. With the parts of the toenail that she removes she will test for fungus.

So for me its a two part process...the first I dread.
Oh joy...I've had it done on the same big toe twice...it didn't fix it...but glad I tried it! :?
It must work some of the time, otherwise it wouldn't be done.... ;)

I was told my next alternative was to remove it (nail) and kill the entire nail bed...I just wasn't ready to go that far!! 8O The thought of no nail at all was not something I was ready to do.
Oh boy... :( I'm not sure I could do it but in the long run... it'll be worth it!!
My husband has this too altho it seems to be getting a little better. Since he has artificial hips he cannot bend over so it's my job to cut them. It is really a challenge, even use a doggy nail clipper on part of it as they are so thick.
My Mom had an injury to her big toe several years ago... and she lost the nail. She always painted the nail bed- and it didn't look too bad. Last year, she had acrylics put on her toes. Now, you can't tell the nail is gone at all... and her toe nails look wonderful...
Have the nailed destroyed solve the issue. Just like false teeth and finger nails & I bet you can get false toe nails. Solved the problem ;) and you can wash them when they get smelly. ( Bit like pants :excited: )
