How to get your dog to ride calmly in a car?

Our OES doesn't ride well in the car. When we brought him home he had to jump all the way from the back to the front so my husband had to sit beside him and hold him down and calm him. (6 hour car ride-YIKES)
We want him to be used to car rides and be comfortable so after getting one of those gates that holds him in the back, we went out on our first car ride to do errands. That was 3 months ago as it did not go well. But we need to work on this so does anyone have any suggestions?

When Dulux is in the back we gave him a stuffed Kong, his favourite blanket etc. He was fine for 5-10 minutes but then got bored with the Kong and wanted to look out the windows. He is deaf and really sensitive/ interested in light and movement. So every car that went by he watched and then tried to blast through the closed back windows to get these cars. He would bark and go crazy. He had our little Yaris swaying back and forth in the lane depending on which side of the car he jumped.

How do I get him to stop trying to attack every car, tree, person that we pass by on our ride? And why does he do this? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Try using a crate that is covered. This usually works really well. They feel secure, and it also reduces stimuli from the outside environment.
Having this dog loose in the car with this behavior is very dangerous...not to mention annoying!
Simon has the same problem in the car. I fixed that. He now has a crate with a cover...as Dawn said. He..and I are much happier.
LOL! Never happened for us with Fozzie although we didn't use a crate we have made his area smaller for him. First it was the kid car seat in the sedan so he didn't have as much room. Now he does have the way back of the minivan and we have a gate wedged behind the second row of seats that he's afraid of. he just walks from side to side looking out the window and doesn't both us; however, when you put the car in park he goes nuts!
Both of our sheepies had an issue with being too interested in passing vehicles. We never found anything that corrected it. We can control it for short periods, but I think the prey drive is much more deeply rooted in some dogs.

They just get so excited to see someone or something coming towards them!
Thanks will try the crate with a cover. And maybe some ear plugs as he hates his crate in the house and barks forever!
